The Space

The Cervantes apartment is located in the historical center, called Barrio de Las Letras or Huertas, in a building of nineteenth century, adjacent to the building where lived and died the famous writer of the sixteenth century, called MIGUEL DE CERVANTES. In this street, in the opposite building, is also the Museum of Lope de Vega, another great writer of the Spanish Golden Age, who lived in that house the last 25 years of his life. This property is surrounded by a very pronounced literary environment due to such illustrious houses where writers lived in the Spanish golden age.
It is also just a short distance from the Plaza Santa Ana, the heart of this splendid and intellectual neighborhood and about 5 minutes from metro Anton Martin or Metro Sevilla at Calle Alcalá. In any case this cozy apartment is situated within walking distance (5 minutes) of all the main attractions and monuments of the city (El Prado, Thyssen, Caixa Forum, Reina Sofia, etc) from where you can enjoy walking around the historical center of Madrid. In few words, this a apartment is an ideal, comfortable and central place to spend a few days or longer periods in Madrid for tourism or work and to fully enjoy this great city.

Apartment Description:
The apartment, which sleeps 4 is situated in a ground floor and well prepared for people who have a disability. The apartment is very quiet and cozy, furnished with taste and functional way, and above all, very well situated for visiting Madrid. There is one bedroom with two single beds and another bright bedroom with double bed. The master bedroom has access to a small private patio and quiet, where you can get some fresh air without having to go outside.
It has a bright living room, bathroom and full kitchen very well equipped. And there is Internet.
For those coming by car, there are several public car parks nearby, one in the Plaza Santa Ana and one in Carrer San Jeronimo, in front of Parliament.

Additional Costs: 40€ (to be paid at the check-in) for cleaning and professional laundry, ensuring complete hygiene of the apartment.

The neighborhood where is this lovely apartment was the residence of great writers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and this neighborhood is also one of the most attractive shopping areas of Madrid.
During the Golden Age famous writers, as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderon de la Barca and many more who shared profession, once lived in this neighborhood that extends around Huertas Street, now pedestrianized and turned into one of the busiest places of the center of Madrid.

Madrid, sixteenth century.
Were running hard years for the Court and tougher years for the common people, who little by little, could see how the city, until then medieval village, then became the capital of the Spanish Empire. Charles I headed a reign which was continued by Philip II, that was decisive in the development of all the historical, social and economic aspects of Madrid. The Plaza Santa Ana, square of great touristic interest for concentrating theaters, bars, restaurants and pubs, has become what it is today thanks to Alvarez Gato, a senior official, steward of King Charles I, who bought the lands near Plaza del Arrabal, actually Plaza Mayor.

Huertas Street
Huertas has become one of the favorite meeting centers for tourists and people who live in Madrid, for its great day and night life, a legacy of the Golden Age. Although the atmosphere would not be the same, left to our imagination, we can use as a reference the low houses and narrow streets, plus some historical buildings like the church of San Sebastian, declared National Monument not for the building but for its historical archives. It contains much of the life of famous people who were baptized here, Ramon de la Cruz, Jacinto Benavente-were married here-Larra, Zorrilla, Becquer, or received tribute after his death.

Words on the floor
Walking down the street of Huertas, the visitor can stop and read some pieces of Luis de Gongora, Francisco de Quevedo and Gustavo Adolfo Becquer who lived or worked in these streets, and have been renowned translating some of his works on the floor of the neighborhood. In the Plaza Matutes we stop to look at the building that housed the printing press of the newspaper “El Imparcial” where worked Gustavo Adolfo Becquer. If you keep walking, after the intersection with street LEON, we find the popular hangout for comedians, place where the lazy and unemployed people used to get together, especially writers and comedians.

The End of the Neighbourhood
The end of the district is located in the Paseo del Prado and the Plaza de las Cortes, where stands a statue of Miguel de Cervantes and also the luxury hotels Palace and Villarreal. A few meters away is located, since 1884, the Ateneo de Madrid, Madrid's famous center talks, forums and cultural events. The museums of Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia occupy an area that was witness of the life and miracles of our writers of the Golden Age
Comedians, writers and all the social life of that time were developed between these streets. It was the Madrid Golden Age, where honor was overvalued and many non- offensive gestures were taken by insults that were resolved in the middle of the street. Today the area, also known as District of the Muses or District of Parnaso, in honor of Cervantes's poem, Journey to Parnaso, houses numerous shops, hotels, cafes and pubs that make this district one of the neuralgic centers of the historic center of the town.

Check In
  • Nice appartment in a great location.
The appartment is clean, comfortable, quiet and convenient, with easy access to Madrid main sights by foot or metro. I was there for gay pride. Slept all day like a baby.

    Response from Maria:

Hello Laurent, thanks a lot for the 2€, no problem about the glass, sometimes this kind of accidents happen, no worries.
And sorry about the iron. I told Susana to tell you about the laundrette next door because the iron and the iron board as well as some other things were kept in a closed room because of the restoration works that were in the building, and I didn't have time to go there to put everything in the right place before you booked. Anyway I am glad you found out the laundry.
And I didn't put any pot of plaster on the shelf, je!! May be a worker put it there and I didn't realise about it really. I will check, thanks.
    Kind regards,

  • The apartment we had originally booked wasnt available but Maria gave us another apartment for the same price. There was a wonderful information book that we found useful for sightseeing in Mardid. She left us an area and metro map. She answered all my questions I had before we got there and there was someone waiting at the apartment and we got in easily and quickly.

  • El piso esta bien, es muy amplio y cómodo. Es un piso muy oscuro por lo que es interior. Con maria no tuvimos problema y la comunicación fue muy buen. El internet anda muy bien.

  • This (email hidden), perfect for our needs. It was very central, a 10 min. walk to the Atocha train station and a short walk to the "Golden Triangle" museums. Plus there was a really great panaderia/cafe right around the corner on Calle de Leon (Cosmen & Keiless or something similar, we loved their chocolate muffins), grocery stores, restaurants...basically, an amazing location. Also you are 2 houses down where Miguel de Cervantes lived! The place was clean and cute. When we arrived, we were met by a greeter who gave us all relevant information. Maria is very organized and had an entire binder of information and suggestions for tenants to read! We definitely enjoyed our stay, and would recommend it to others who are looking for a central, comfortable apartment in Madrid!

  • Muy mala cobertura telefónica que hace imposible terminar una conversación normal. Apartamento muy oscuro que obliga a mantener las luces encendidas a cualquier hora. Falta algún sillón o sofá cómodo.

  • Maria's place was a nice location, right in the heart of Madrid's main attractions. Most of all the tourist attractions were a walking distance, between 10-20 minutes, which was awesome. The only fault I would mention is this apartment was on ground level and is an apartment which accommodates individuals with physical disabilities so the entry way has a ramp structure. Also, the apartment can get a feeling of dampness at times since the apartment is on the ground floor and there is not a lot of air circulating in the apartment. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and worthwhile if you won't be stuck in the apartment the entire day.

  • We stayed 5 (email hidden). We were 4 people and we enjoyed our trip.
The appartment is great and in a perfect location. Very good service.
The flat is really nice and clean.
I would not hesitate to stay there again !
