Overall my experience was quite poor, for several reasons:
1. The apartment is misrepresented online. There is no living room. There is no TV. The kitchen is small and the eating area sits only 2 people comfortably, at most 3. There is no bottle of wine. There were sugar ants in the kitchen and bathroom and the bathroom, though clean in appearance, smelled of urine.
2. The apartment is *very* loud on weekends, because it is directly opposite "Peaches and Cream", a nightclub where people literally yell and sing right outside your window from 1 till 4 AM.
3. By far the worst part of our experience was that the hosts have no respect for personal privacy. We had a miscommunication about our leaving time, and they believed that we wanted to check out at 4:30 AM, when were planning to leave in the late morning. The host let themselves into our apartment at 4:30 AM while we were sound asleep and literally burst into our bedroom without knocking, threw on the lights, shocking all of us and waking our 18 month old daughter. We had to deal with her in our underwear, and although she was quite apologetic, the manager we dealt with online refused any compensation for the invasion of our privacy, for waking our daughter, for the lack of cleanliness of the flat, and blamed us for the incident. I can understand a miscommunication but it is a total invasion of privacy for someone to enter a bedroom without an invitation, and I am still very upset about this and am seeking mediation from airbnb.
However: this is not to say that there is nothing good about the apartment, if you don't care about noise and are indifferent to the actual host experience. The apartment is in an excellent location, very central and close to many good restaurants and bars. Many tourist sites on the Pest side are within walking distance, and the tourist center of Buda is also easily accessed via the bridge. The bedrooms are spacious, the kitchen has all the basics you will need. While clearly not immaculate, the flat isn't that dirty, and the price is reasonable. Basically I would say that this is a good flat for a stag party or a group of young friends who want to party in Budapest but a poor choice for a family or for older people who go to bed early...
I highly disagree with your review for the following reasons:
1.) The floor plan of the apartment is available to see under the listing with a detailed description, to avoid any misunderstandings and so that everyone can see what amenities the apartment has.
The apartment was cleaned very thouroughly before your arrival, ant traps were placed (and were shown to you) because in the spring time, seldom, but we do sometimes get some sugar ants (especially on stormy days and if bread crumbs are left on the floor). We normally also apply a spray in this case, but taking into consideration that you arrived with a baby, we didn't do so, to avoid any potential hazards.
It is impossible to have urine or even the slightest smell of it in the bathroom, as we always wipe and mop-up the floor, the tiles and the toilet itself with bleach and then a special antiseptic lemon-scented formula. We always take extreme care in doing this. The only way that you could have had the urine around was if you did it yourself.
2.) You are right that the club on the corner (but not directly opposite the building) may get noisy from time-to-time on Friday and Saturday nights, although the guards of the club are there to remind people to keep quite outside as it is illegal to disturb the silence after 10 P.M.. But this is the exact reason why we have the white colour noise-cancelling shutters by the windows which you may close if these circumstances arise. I suppose you did not use these.
3.) Renee, upon your arrival you clearly told us that you were leaving at 4:30 A.M. for an early flight, you even emphasised: "We are leaving very EARLY IN THE MORNING". This was even noted down in our notebook. Even if your travel arrangements have changed you never notified us, even though we sent you 3 e-mails asking you if you need help in the early morning transfer to the airport. You replied at a late stage saying that you'll go to the airport by your own means, not mentioning a single word about any change in your check-out time. Besides all of this, why would we wake up at 3:30 A.M. on a Sunday morning to go to the apartment and wake you up? This seems highly illogical.
Just to further clarify the details of this unfortunate morning: first of all, the front door of the apartment was left wide open (with your wallet just beside the door), Secondly I would like to emphasis that we did not burst into your room without knocking (we never do so!!!). We have knocked on your door twice and waited for atleast 2 minutes before entering. We thought that you have accidentally overslept and that's why you are not awake (this has happen previously to guests of ours and they were very grateful that they didn't miss their flight thanks to us). Thirdly your baby wasn't waken up by us, but by your and your husband's strong reactions.
Finally I must say that even though it wasn't our mistake at all, upon returning to the apartment at 10 o'clock you were given a box of chocolate and a pair of socks for the baby. As a "compensation" for something that wasn't commited by us, but clearly your miscommunication.
Jesteśmy zadowoleni z pobytu. Lokalizacja świetna, bardzo sympatyczni gospodarze, czysto, klasyczne secesyjne mieszkanie....Cóż więcej potrzeba?
We are 4 middle-aged Canadians who stayed in Opera Corner for 3 nights. The location and accommodation were perfect. Everything was within walking distance, and we took full advantage of that to explore this wonderful city. We did not use the cooking facilities, but everything needed was in the apartment, and groceries were easily purchased. Why spend time cooking when so many cafes and restaurants are close by serving delicious food? The apartment was exactly what we needed, and we left Budapest with great memories and the hope to someday return. A special thanks goes to Agnes for all her help.
Marton's apartment was awesome. It is about 5 minute walk to the metro. The place was clean, and check in was easy. He even gave a bottle of wine! Great stay!
We have just returned from a four-day visit to Budapest, during which our group of four stayed in Marton's apartment. This was also our first experience of airbnb. I'm delighted to say that everything went perfectly.
We had arranged a pick-up at the airport through Marton. He contacted me with the details and the driver was waiting at the appointed time. Zoltan (I think) was efficient, friendly and spoke English. He pointed out places of interest as he drove us into the city. We were so pleased with his service that we arranged for him to pick us up for our return trip.
We were met at the apartment by a lady - I'm afraid I don't know her name - who welcomed us and showed us around. She also showed us the main places to visit in Budapest and told us where we could buy food, withdraw cash and eat out. The apartment is located in an old building but it was perfectly clean. The beds were made up for us ready and clean towels were provided. We were also pleased to find that soap, toilet roll, washing-up liquid etc. were provided.
Despite the February weather, the apartment was warm and there was plenty of hot water. The internet worked perfectly. Despite being in the city centre, we could hear little noise from outside.
Marton’s place is in an ideal location for visiting the city on foot, but it's also convenient for public transport. Just downstairs are a number of shops, including fast-food outlets and a 24-hour supermarket.
We would not hesitate to stay in Marton’s apartment again.
Very good appartment in the city of Budapest - close to Metro 1 and 3. Many shops and restaurants right in the area, as well as the Opera House and Basilica - perfect for an exciting city break.
Internet works perfectly - just as the heating (we were there in winter).
Marton has always responded quickly, all appointments have been reliably observed.
Loved staying here! Perfect area for going out and getting to know Budapest. The flat itself was really roomy, clean, and had everything we need. Will definitely try stay here again when I come back. The only thing I can think of that wasn't perfect was the shower, which flooded quite a lot. But no big deal really.
Very pleasant city, should you go there, don’t miss the occasion to go to ruin bars and Széchenyi public bath.
We had a fabulous time in Budapest--this is a great apartment in a great location. Didn't get to meet Marton, was met by a lovely woman who showed us around and gave us good advice. The whole visit went very smoothly, we were quite happy.
The location was very central, just a few blocks from the Opera and about a 10 or 15 minute walk to the Parliament. The room/apartment was enough space, clean, and easy to find. It was a bit confusing when I arrived because there was no door buzzer for the apartment I needed, and the host was not waiting outside at the agreed upon time. Also, the apartment is located street side at the intersection of a popular club/bar scene area. The music and drunken singing outside the window lasted till somewhere between 3 and 5 AM.
That said, the location was great, Marton responded in only a few hours, and the price was unbeatable. If you're not looking for a quite place and you want location, ease of use, and a good price point, this is it.
