Interaction with Guests

I work from my office in the basement most days ~9am to ~5pm, and can be available for guests as needed. The Guest Home caretaker, Gregg Brazel, sleeps in the unfinished 2nd floor bedroom about half the time and is usually busy with work when at the house, but can also be available to assist guests. Gregg is moving to Detroit from Chicago to design and build shipping ecological container structures and has been constructing Guest Home improvements since April 2013.

The Neighborhood

Virginia Park is an old, authentic Detroit neighborhood; a quiet bedroom community named after the historic street 6 blocks south. If you are not used to urban living, its typically Detroit issues with abandonment and upkeep may appear off-putting. But the neighbors are very friendly, well used to the Guest Home, and happy to meet visitors. I encourage you to say hello to anyone on the street. That's the Detroit way!

* Peaches & Greens, 8838 3rd St - Fresh produce grocery 2 houses away owned by the amazing CDC (Community Development Corporation), featuring vegetables grown in the community garden across the street!
* Cafe Sonshine [sic], 8902 2nd Ave (1 block), CDC's hidden gem salt-free soul food restaurant 1 block away. The best place for authentic Detroit cuisine!
* King Cole Foods, 40 Clairmount St (3 blocks), Full grocery store, no alcohol
* Sam's Market, 760 Hazelwood St (across the street), Alcohol/snacks. Owned & operated by very friendly couple Rob & Gene, who moved to Detroit from Iraq in the '80s.

Other Things to Note

History to hipsters, Motown to mashups, "ruin porn" to DIY culture, urban gardens and some of the friendliest people you'll meet outside of Polynesia – Detroit holds so much for you to discover! Just let me know what you're interested in and I'll give you recommendations for eating out, bars, clubs, art, nature, biking, Urban Exploration (UrbEx), insider events & more. Detroit is a city of contrasts. Its reality is sometimes stark, often artistic, and always expressed from the Heart. Come experience Detroit from the inside. Whether here for a day or the season, you'll soon feel the Detroit Love that drives us.

A Word About Safety...
People routinely confuse poverty with danger. Detroit's violent reputation is long outdated. It's as (un)safe for visitors as any other big US city, and like most it looks worse than it is. Downtown is incredibly clean & secure - more so than many of our flashy suburbs! I simply advise guests to exhibit street smarts (look & walk confidently, be aware of your environment, avoid unpopulated areas, use the buddy system, etc.) and remove or hide GPSs, chargers and other valuables in cars. Touch wood, neither myself nor any of hundreds of guests or their vehicles as ever had any issue with crime in my neighborhood.

Please familiarize yourself with Airbnb's Moderate Cancellation Policy. In the event you need to cancel your reservation such that the policy doesn't allow for a full refund, I will credit you for the unrefunded amount toward a future stay. This credit is fully transferable (gift or sale) to anyone else - just let me know if you transfer it so I can update my records. Cancellation for any reason is subject to the above policies, including not having read the entire listing, or inability to see past Detroit's off-putting surface.

Check In
  • I met Nathan a few nights previous to me staying at his unique home in Detroit by mutual friend. I was told to check out this spot of Nathans because he (email hidden), and energy around it. I instantly loved the place. It looks like a lot of personal thought and hard decent work was going into this home. I am amazed at how well thought out the plans where for the space. Nathan is doing a great job in supporting his community. It shows how well he treats his community, home, friends and guests. I am going to come back to see what fun improvements have been made to the place next time I am in the area. I enjoyed the Hammock in the room I stayed in, and the backyard is going to be more amazing when the flowers come sprucing in. Thank you Nathan for everything you had to offer. Until next time my friend.

  • My roommates and I had a wonderful experience at the Detroit d highly recommend staying here to anyone. As a group of queer, poly, herb loving adventurers, we felt right at home. However, I think that this house could make anyone feel right at home!

  • It was an amazing stay in Detroit!!

Nathan is very responsive and really helpful! He provided us with every help that was needed and he was just so friendly and hospitable.
The entire house was beautiful, spatious and amazingly cozy with funny and helpful stickers.

I loved Detroit as a city, it is much safer than say and people there are really friendly and open.
I couldn't have dreamed of a better way to visit Detroit for the first time. Thank you, Nathan, for that!
I will most definitely be staying with him again if ever in town.

I highly recommend staying there to experience Detroit, it (email hidden)!

  • Had a good stay in the Air Room. We never met Nathan because we were there such a short time, but he was so accommodating and welcoming. Really makes you realize how friendly detroiters are!

One of the beds was pretty uncomfortable, but we had a nice quiet night and we came with our 15 month son who was cozy in his little room in the (email hidden) to stay in a real Detroit neighbourhood.

    Response from Nathan:

Thanks so much and come again any time, Liz!
Future guests: I've added another mattress to the offending bed, making it extra comfy =]

  • It was great meeting Nathan. He was friendly and hospitable. The home is lovely and well taken care of. This was a fabulous first Airbnb experience for our family. Our children loved staying in the Air Room. There is a hammock and a "pillow closet" (closet full of pillows) that both kids loved. They refused to sleep on the futon with such great options!

The neighborhood was just where we wanted to stay as we wanted to experience all sides of Detroit. There are many houses being bought and renovated like Nathan's and yet there are still many abandoned places. We felt safe and cozy in the Detroit Loves You Guest Home and would gladly stay again!

Thank you, Nathan, for your hospitality.

If you can stay here, do it! You will not regret a great experience and reasonable rate in the heart of a city in revitalization!

  • My bf and I stayed at Nathan's place for a night, in the Air Room which is in the attic of the house. The room itself is super cozy! The staircase leading up to it is sound proofed which made it very enjoyable to walk up. Nathan had the heater turned up so when we arrived it would be warm and comfortable.

The neighborhood is very safe and convenient for anyone biking or driving downtown. There's a restaurant nearby called Cafe Sonshine we were very impressed with.
Overall it was a great experience to stay there! Nathan was very knowledgeable, helpful, and fun to talk to. I would stay again if I return.

  • Had a great time at Nathan's place. Great spot for a visit to Detroit.

    November 2013
  • Nathan is very responsive and was incredibly helpful getting the house booked. The neighborhood is not as bad as it might seem -- people were incredibly friendly and the soul food place a block away is AMAZING. Gregg who hosted us while Nathan was away was very chill and a great tour guide.

The only thing I will say is that you have to be very flexible to fit more than maybe 10 people in the house. We had 14 and had people sleeping on the floor and in air mattresses they brought from home. This was not a problem, but good to note. The single bathroom also made this a challenge.

  • There are too many good things to say about Nathan, his home, and our experience in Detroit! But I'll try. Nathan was a gracious and generous host. He took time to meet with me in advance so that I could see the property. I work (email hidden), and I needed to have buy-in from our executive director and board members before renting the space for a group of high school students who would be volunteering on neighborhood projects in Detroit for a week. Nathan has a big heart for his & the global community. He found a way to make our goals & ideals mesh. Not many people will rent to a group of teens. He trusted me, our org, and the students. We appreciated, and I hope honored, that trust in return. The surrounding neighbors were friendly & welcoming as well. The grocery store a few blocks away was very convenient. I highly recommend both the Detroit Loves You Guest Home & Nathan as your host!! (Oh...and we really liked Nathan's "green" lifestyle too!) Thanks Nathan!!!

    July 2013
  • First off, we are a group of 4 adults that are not accustomed yet in travelling out of our comfort zone. So our first reaction arriving at Nathan's place was of slight dismay regarding the surroundings and street activity. We all started having mixed awkward feelings about our decision to stay in the heart of Detroit; but once we got settled in and started taking moments out in the streets, I believe we all flourished. There is "gang" activity, but all were polite, and when we visited the store the owners were darling! I believe we all grew in some sort of way from staying here, and all of it was positive. We actually realised that our street was probably one of the most safest to be on. My heart swells for the community; and once you interact with the locals you get energized by their warmth.

The front porch is a beautiful spot to BBQ, chat and smoke on. The kitchen is well equip with supplies. We shared our food, and indulged in others who had left theirs also. Finding groceries was painless, along with beers. We had a car rental, and was soon navigating around effortlessly. The rooms were a perfect size with fans in all. Nathan has foreseen many useful items that may be required, the house is just packed along with numerous towels and bedding.

Now, we rented the whole house for a weeks’ time - which in turn did not seem like that. Nathan came and went quietly, working in either his office or the developing basement. There was also another gentleman whom stored his belongings there and came to retrieve once sleeping next door each evening. At first this seemed a bit obtrusive, but in all reality it was very nice to have people around that were familiar with the neighbourhood and the history of Detroit. So we welcomed the visitors, along with the wonderful Patricia who collected our bottles. So thank you Nathan, and of course Greg :)

Nathan - a wonderful, charming, attentive, aspiring man with a heart of gold. I understand what he is doing for Detroit and back him 110%. I hope to come back for the Orion festival for a few years to come, and if that is the case would have no qualms in staying here again. Everyone who stays at DETROIT LOVES YOU helps in bringing back the city it once was.

Nathan is also thorough with his email, or any contact prior and after your visit. We left a hat and camera there - he contacted us and shipped it out as soon as he could.

I was made in Detroit, then lived all around southeast Michigan (between world travels) not calling the city itself my home until 2004. Around that time I began hosting travelers on my couches. I felt blessed to experience Detroit and Detroiters through their eyes and learn about their experiences here and back home. My passion for hosting grew over the years until I bought my Virginia Park neighborhood house and opened the Detroit Loves You Guest Home in 2010 - the first AirBnB in Detroit! Much more than a personal business, the Guest Home directly supports the Virginia Park neighborhood, Hazelwood Block Club, and Community Development Corporation with 10% of your reservation's proceeds. *That's* why Detroit loves you!
