An idyllic, stylish and romantic guest cottage by the Mekong river and only 10 minutes by bicycle from Cai Be's Floating Market. We pride ourselves on providing the best Vietnamese food in the area. An ideal 2 night escape from Saigon. Bicycles for free.

The space
My place is located in the midst of a scenic Durian tree plantation next to the mighty Mekong River and is harmoniously integrated into a typical Mekong-style Vietnamese village community, which still maintains much of its original charm.
The lodge can be reached easily by foot or bicycle from the centre of Cai Be city - that is the famous Floating Market - by simply crossing a small tributary to the Mekong River by ferry (see photo on the opposite page). The lodge is therefore pleasantly removed from the noise and bustle of the provincial city of Cai Be, while simultaneously being close enough for a quick impromptu outing from the lodge at will.
The main house of the property, surrounded by scenic golf course fairways, combines a casual reception area and indoor air-conditioned dining area. The outdoor dining area is located in front of the main house, with an unobstructed view of the passing village life.

The guest cottages are idyllically "hidden" among the Durian trees, seamlessly blended into their natural setting. The cottages are close enough to the river to receive the cooling, refreshing and energising air from the Mekong River, while being far enough away to be undisturbed by the rumbling noise of the diesel engines of the passing merchant ships on the river.

The Durian Lodge at Mekong was conceived as a place of relaxation in the midst of nature, an ideal weekend escape from Saigon's bustling city life, a romantic getaway for lovers, a place for recharging batteriesafter days of endless partying in Saigon, a Shangri-La for fine food lovers of simple yet refined Vietnamese cuisine, an opportunity to harmoniously experience a different culture by mingling with an authentic Vietnamese village lifestyle with Buddhist people who are culturally predisposed to be friendly and smiling.

Guest access
When I designed my guest cottages, we tried hard to integrate a sense of Japanese Zen with unpretentious Balinese architectural perfection and age-old Asian beliefs in Feng Shui to create a "simple" cottage devoid of any distracting baroque elements. The objective was to create in the eyes of the beholder a feeling of peace, relaxation, reflection, and being at home in the countryside, while avoiding any display of swaggering exuberance in faux-gilded gold and glittering colours, as so commonly is found in Vietnam.

My cottages are thatched with hand-woven palm leaf roofs and therefore benefit from the naturally cooling effect of this type of traditional roofing.
In addition, the cottages are furnished with particularly quiet, high quality air conditioners without the constant propeller thrum far too often associated with hotels in the tropics.

You might be surprised to find that there are no glass windows in our cottages, as all "windows" are made from solid, movable, fine wood.
Our king-size mattresses, the finest to be found, are imported from renowned mattress makers in the United States and Japan. It is up to you whether we provide either Western-style mattresses or Japanese futon mattresses.

Our bathrooms are partially roofed and partially open- air and decorated with a traditional Zen foot massage floor made of hand-selected river cobble stones. While taking a shower, one can wonder at the symphony of stars under the clear, uncontaminated skies of the Mekong Delta and experience a sense of freedom while listening to the giant bamboos outside the shower walls "sing" with the wind.

The king-sized beds are surrounded by unusually spacious mosquito nets which do not give the sleeper that sense of being shut in which is far too often associated with hotel mosquito nets.

Our linen, towels and free toiletries are of the finest international quality.

To summarise, our cottages are a curious mix of certain key elements exclusive to luxury boutique hotel properties with other elements more frequently associated with basic tropical simplicity. Hence our cottages might possibly be best described as "refined simplicity". Also, in keeping with our philosophy, our cottages do not have televisions, sound systems or radios.

And lastly, a word of warning: We have no control over the noises of nature. For those guests who are noise-sensitive to the recitations of frogs on rainy days, the fluttering wings of night birds, the morning calls of pheasants and chickens, the occasional barking of dogs in unison during full moon nights, the noises of music and expressions of joy of the occasional village wedding party, this is certainly not the place to stay.
