River House and Ski Retreat

House - Private room · Silverton Ave, Durango, CO 81301, United States

The Space

Our home overlooks the Animas River with giant cottonwoods in the backyard. The Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Train passes by our house, children, (and adults) love to run out and wave. Mesa Verde National Park is forty five minutes away. We are five minutes from historic downtown Durango which has an amazing amount of wonderful and unique restaurants, fun bars, historic hotels and shopping, all with an old west feel. You can catch the Trolley a few blocks from our home and it will take you downtown, (for free). We are also a few blocks from the scenic river trail, miles and miles of walking and biking that follows the animas river through town, all the way out to the mall and beyond. Our area is also rich in world class mountain biking and hiking trails. If you are looking for a winter ski vacation we have four diverse ski resorts close by. Durango Mountain Resort is thirty minutes away, Silverton Mountain, one hour, Wolf Creek, two hours and Hesperus Ski Area an hour away as well. There are also many beautiful areas for cross country skiing, snow shoeing or back country skiing. My husband and I are very easy going . We love to have fun and entertain. We have lived here for thirty years and would be happy to share what we know about this truly amazing, magical area. We have three children , two have moved out hence the extra space. The two bedrooms that are for rent are in a wing of the house that is somewhat away from the kitchen and our bedrooms, affording a good bit of privacy. One room has a queen bed ,the other has a double. There is a guest bathroom by the bedrooms. Near the bedrooms is a second living room and a laundry room. The kitchen is the heart of our home and overlooks the river with a porch just off the kitchen doors. We also have a jaccuzi on the porch overlooking the river.Guests are welcome to use the kitchen. We will provide coffee, tea, fruit , yogurt and granola each morning. I am an excellent cook and am happiest in the kitchen so let me know if you want to arrange any meals while you are here. I am also a certified yoga instructor and would be happy to provide classes on my beautirul covered porch overlooking the river. If you are interested in either of these extras just let me know and I will provide prices. We would be thrilled to share our oasis and make your stay as relaxing, comfortable and fun as possible.

  • The long and short of it: stay here. The rental space is very comfortable and large and definitely well cared for. The house is beautiful, close to town, on a freaking river, and full of palpable good vibes. The generosity of the hosts and the comfort with which they invite you into their home is honestly overwhelming. These are kind folks with a great space that they are genuinely good at sharing.

Thank you so much Deirdre! Please come back and see us!

  • Had a great stay with Mark and Diane. Very gracious, kind hosts! They helped us through a traumatic experience, and we are grateful for their help!

  • Diane was a very sweet and gentle person. I say person because she went far beyond the role of "host" and really made me feel like one of her own. I stayed the weekend for her and after our intro she showed me the space and insisted I feel like I live there too.

To the side of the main house, a door lets you into the sort of "loft" space that has the bathroom, sitting area, and bedrooms for Airbnb. Though the entire area is for her guests, it still feels very much apart of and attached to the house. She and Mark are at once available and offers privacy when you want it.

This was my second use of Airbnb and I'm never using a hotel again when I travel. I will certainly be back to her home as It's in a unique area of the country, and I have a lot more hiking to do in SW Colorado! It would be impossible to regret staying with Diane and Mark!

  • Mark and Diane were great hosts! We enjoyed skiing Durango Mountain and then we headed to check it. Mark and Diane welcomed us and made us feel very welcomed. They suggested great places to have dinner and drinks. The rooms were great to sleep in and very quite to make for a peaceful evening. The shower was great after a full day of skiing. In the morning we had fresh coffee, tea and cereal with fruit.
I recommend highly to stay at Mark and Diane place in Durango.
Thank you Mark and Diane for a great visit in your home.

  • I had a wonderful time staying at Mark and Diane's. It was very homey and comfortable. They are in a great location, a couple miles from downtown, but only a couple blocks from the free Trolley, that will bring you any where you need to go.

  • This was our first time with airbnb and we could not have wished for a better debut.! This home is so beautiful and Mark/Diane are very friendly and helpful people. The home is clean and nice and the room is located in a seperate part of the home. We borrowed a canoe and took a very nice trip on the river. Lots of opportunities in Durango close to the house.

  • The house was lovely, just as described. We had a lot of privacy, but were also welcome to join the owners on their deck for a glass of wine or breakfast. Diane and Mark are warm, friendly, interesting, and helpful. They and their friends gave us excellent ideas about where to eat or buy food, where to hike, where to see archeological ruins, as well as lots of other information about the area. They loaned us a canoe for a day's paddle on the Animas River (and Mark got it in and out of the river for us). We had the ideal Airbnb experience with them.

  • It was a simple pleasure to settle in at Mark and Diane's serene and artful home nestled in the Cottonwood lined Animas River.Upon our arrival our hosts introduced us to Historic Downtown Durango over (homemade,& homegrown) Tomato Bruchettas and a nice Merlot on the shady patio. The restaurants in Durango are abundant and Diane was so helpful in suggesting some great places to eat and be entertained. Their home is cozy, quiet, and artfully decorated. We were busy during our stay with a drive to Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings, Biking, and exploring Historic Durango.....Just a Perfect spot to spend a few days and, oh so, comfortable nights.
