No joke, this is seriously the best location if you want to be downtown. The apartment is near the corner of E. 4th Street and Bowery in the absolute center of downtown Manhattan bordering NOHO, East Village, Lower East Side, SOHO and Greenwich Village and Union Square, the West Village, Little Italy and Chinatown are within a very short walk. Brooklyn is also a quick shot on a number of subway lines.

N, R stop - 8th St/NYU
6 stop - Bleecker or Astor Place

RESTAURANTS
Some of the coolest places to eat are all within blocks. Foodies love this neighborhood because there are so many amazing restaurants and food experiences of all levels in the neighborhood. Some of my favorites in the hood are Momofuku, The Smile, Peel's, Shabu Tatsu, Caliope, Prune, Freeman's, Mission Chinese, Bond St, Il Buco, Hecho en Dumbo and literally countless others. There are also some good spots for vegans, paleo etc like Caravan of Dreams, Dirt Candy, Liquiteria Juice Bar, The Juice Press, Hu Kitchen and many more. Chinatown, Indian Row, Ethiopian and pretty much anything else you can dream of is super close.

BARS
It's also very central to awesome bars ranging from classic old-school NY spots like McSorley's to specialty cocktail bars with phenomenal drinks like Booker and Dax, to great dives and local watering holes like KGB, Lit, Tom and Jerry's and Von; to upscale bars at the Bowery Hotel or The Standard Hotel; to a whole host of gay bars such as The Cock, Eastern Bloc and Boiler Room; to sports bars like Phebe's on the corner of the block, or Cooper's nearby.

COFFEE
Great coffee is also super close including The Smile, Bowery Coffee, Gasoline Alley, La Columbe and Abraco to name a few. Also, I keep fresh Blue Bottle or Stumptown Coffee on hand at the apartment for guests who want to make their own.

SHOPPING
Pretty much any level and type of shopping experience you are looking for is nearby since practically every brand strives to have a store in downtown NY, plus there are amazing small, local-owned places too and they are ALL close. This list doesn't even scratch the surface, but some examples are Levi's, Converse, Prada, Helmut Lang, Agnes B, Oden, Opening Ceremony, Jack Spade, Freeman's, H&M, Uniqlo, Top Shop, Kid Robot, Rogan, Dave's Quality Meat, Flight Club, St. Marks Books, Taschen Books, Dashwood Books, Other Music, John Derian, DWR the list goes on and on and ON!

MUSEUMS & TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Being in the middle part of Manhattan, the apartment is about halfway between midtown attractions like Empire State Building, Times Square and MoMA; and lower Manhattan attractions like Wall Street and Ground Zero. You can even walk to either. A bit farther is Metropolitan Museum, Guggenheim, Harlem etc, which are all within a quick subway or cab ride away. The New Museum, Tenement Museum and the Merchant House are just blocks away.

THEATER/CINEMA
4th Street is also off, off, off, off Broadway and lined with great small theaters including the legendary La Mama. Some fun comedy clubs are on the block and the long running Stomp and Blue Man Group shows are just a few blocks as well. Amazing indie cinemas are also very close including Anthology Film Archives, Angelika, Sunshine, IFC, Film Forum and more!

THIS IS A WALK UP
To add to your true NY experience, like most buildings around here, this is a walk-up and its on the 5th floor. The benefits of being on the top floor are not only a firm derriere, but that it's extra quiet and more light. :)

GYMS
Speaking of health and fitness, there are about 6+ gyms nearby, including Crunch, New York Sports Club, New York Health and Racquet Club, Dolphin, Blink and David Barton all within under a 5 minute walk from the apt.

GROCERIES
There are also great markets nearby including the 4th Street Food Co-op health food store next door to my building, a giant Whole Foods Market 4 blocks away and countless corner store bodegas including my favorite East Village Farm, which delivers 24 Hours a day.

LAUNDRY
There is a laundromat on the block that picks up and delivers, and virtually everything you need is a phone call or a short walk away.

AIRPORTS
Depending on time of day, taxi from JFK is anywhere from 30 min - 1.5 hours. From Newark its around 45 min to 1.5 hours and from LaGuardia, it can be as quick as 20 min to 45 min. Trains and subways are least expensive travel options from the airports and happy to provide info regarding whichever route you choose to take.

Gay friendly. No smoking.

  • Staying at Jason’s was great, the location is perfect!!, I love east village so I can’t think of a better place to stay in NY. The apt is very cozy, the room is quiet, the bed is comfortable and having your own half bathroom is very convenient.
Jason was really, really a great host, he is very nice, kind, and makes you feel like home. I really enjoyed our conversations. Thanks a lot Jason!!!

  • Staying with Jason proved to be an excellent time. He was willing to take me in with very little notice and was super accommodating. He is also well informed about the city and it's happenings, which is a bonus for anyone looking to explore what NYC has to offer culturally. His apartment is clean and stylish; good books, nice art collection. All in all, Jason is a great guy and i would definitely hit'em up again.

  • Staying with Jason epitomized the airbnb experience; being a welcome guest, learning about a city from the perspective of a local, and making a friend. As a solo traveler, It was great to have Jason around to offer suggestions, or to chat about my experiences in the city.

As mentioned in other reviews, he's on the top floor of his apartment, which could be a problem if you have trouble hauling luggage upstairs. Also Jason has a day job, so you may need to be a little flexible if you arrive during the day. I had to stop by his workplace on my way to the apartment to pick up the key. It worked out fine.

The room itself was ideal. The private half-bath is great. The bed was a comfortable queen. Two people would be very comfortable here.

I would gladly stay here again!

  • Wow - awesome location, extremely clean place and incredibly cool and accommodating host.

Jason was very easy to get a hold of and responded quickly. He even provided recommendations and sent texts letting me know of cool things going on in NY. The room has towels, blankets, comfy pillows, sample toiletries, books & magazines and character.

Jason even asked for my feedback and what additionally would be nice to have in the room. I couldn't think of anything to make this place a better experience. Jason mentioned adding a universal spare changer to the room for guests who might leave/lose their chargers, something I didn't need but others might......Now that's caring & empathy for your guests and why this place/host combo rocks!

  • This was my first time using airbnb and I couldn't have been happier with the room, location and hospitality Jason provided over the few days I was in New York. Jason's apartment is in a great location. It is very easy and convenient to get around The Village, Soho and Midtown. The room and 1/2 bath is very neat, tidy, comfortable, quiet and an enjoyable place or experience to stay. Jason knows some great places to eat, shop and grab a good coffee. Thanks again Jason for letting me stay and I hope to stay with you again sometime soon.

  • This is by far my favorite and memorable Airbnb experience.

Not only the apartment is clean, quiet and beautiful, the location is absolutely perfect, and everything else, but the host, Jason, is such a great guy, here to help if you need it.

    June 2012
  • Jason is all kinds of wonderful. He is super helpful, kind and patient. Funny and interesting guy who completely took in everything I was looking for and hoping to do, and built me the perfect 18 hours in NYC. The apartment is in a great location, walking distance to transit, parks and restaurants. Whatever you're looking for is in reach, with a host that can't be beat.

  • This was my second time at Jason's place and if you don't mind the stairs this is the perfect place to stay in Manhattan! Awesome location, quite room and you will be close to the best restaurants in New York, just ask Jason and you get really good recommendations in every price level. We went to a concert in Williamsburg with his friends and it was just again a awesome time in NY! Thanks again and see you next time I'm around.
