"La Casetta" is a little cosy one-room cottage for two people right in the center of Sassorosso, one of the most picturesque villages of Garfagnana. Sassorosso ("Red Stone") is named after the typical pink-red marble with which the houses are built. The village is on the boundary of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park, in a wonderful location full of wildlife. An ideal place for those who love hiking, trekking, bird- and wildlife watching, etc.
In winter, skiing facilities (email hidden) away.
The cottage is 20 sq. m. and it has a kitchenette and a bathroom, with a little garden outside.
The bed is a double sofa-bed, but it's comfortable (mattress is 140cm large) and easy to open; you can leave linens and covers in it while closed.
- gas stove, oven, fridge, cookware and tableware;
- tv and dvd player;
- free wi-fi (though we have often connection issues at night);
- pellet stove.
- bed linens, covers and pillows;
- bath towels, soap, hairdryer;
- basic ingredients are available on demand (salt, sugar, milk, coffee, tea, etc).
- feel free to use the herbs of the garden!
Many people ask for air conditioning: I can assure that here there's no need of it even during the hottest summer! :)
- right around Sassorosso there are two restaurants, the nearest one is also a bar and pizzeria ("La Nuova Pineta"). They're outside the village but you can get there by a walk.
- the nearest grocery shop, pharmacy, post office and bank are in Villa Collemandina (5 minutes by car).
- I live just on the other side of the street (it is actually a stairway) so feel free to call me for any needs. I'll be happy to give you any sort of information on what to do or to see!
- pets are welcome, but keep in mind that some cats live in the neighborhood and they like our small garden. :)

If you look for a quiet and peaceful place to relax Paolo's apartment is the perfect getaway, either for a couple of days or even weeks. The apartment has everything you need and the views are just amazing. We loved it there. There are countless possibilities for hiking and quite a few nice small towns around. We also enjoyed the fact that the region is not yet so crowded. And if you come to stay, don't forget to visit Paolo's bottega/bar that he has recently opened in Sassorosso. Try the grappa. It is excellent.
If you ever wondered how it feels like to live in a small stone village of 55 souls (and that many cats) on the summit of a mountain and let time be still for a while, this is for you. Paolo is a great host and lives nearby, we had a very good time together around a bottle of Brunello. The only thing I found a bit sad during my stay was that I was with a friend instead of my girlfriend as this is a quite stunning place for a romantic retreat. This was a great escape from the rat race that life can be, sometimes. Gratzie, Paolo!
You can totally trust the pictures, the cottage in Sassorosso is really nice! You will find the cottage in a hilly, green landscape called "Garfagna". From the window you can enjoy the view of the trees and hills of the valley. The cottage is well equipped and charmingly decorated: from local jams to information material about the area everything was there. Cooking facilities are very good and you will enjoy using the fresh herbs from the garden. You may even see some amazing butterflies and other animals and have some soft and purring visitors if you like cats ( ;
Paolo is a great host, he immediately responded to our emails, he gave us tips for outings and made us feel very welcome in his little village! He speaks perfect English so it's no problem if people don't know Italian. However, other locals often don't know English so it would be advisable to learn or write a list of useful phrases. Paolo even invited us to a local festival where we got the chance to experience regional food, music and dances.
It is possible to visit Lucca and Barga, two very pretty towns which are not too far away. However, I guess it will be difficult to stay at Sassorosso if you don't have a car.
For us it was a great holiday, thank you very much Paolo!
