Recently stayed (2 people) for 1 week at Mounia and Michel's.
Had a great experience overall.
Mounia and Michel are very pleasant and welcoming hosts.
They keep a very well organized operation. The accommodations were in a very central location and felt safe and clean.
We highly recommend staying with them!
For a very affordable rate for me, my husband and a dear friend, we were able to stay in the heart of Barcelona's Gothic Barrio, around the corner from Gothic Cathedral.
The host was kind to upgrade us to the larger room for the same price at the last minute.
I missed the part of the listing that identified this place as a "dorm" -- for even though it was smartly decorated and a lovely apartment, we shared one toilet with 7 or 8 people, so it did indeed seem more like a "dorm" than a "private rented room in an apartment".
We understood we'd have kitchen privileges, but due to what must've been a miscommunication between the host and her proxies, we did feel using the kitchen would have been an imposition.
Unfortunately for us, the host was unavailable to host us in person due to a large-minute foreign trip, and we had a language barrier which complicated things. We had trouble getting clear directions and it took us close to 3 hours upon arriving in Barcelona to get to our room.
I also missed the part where it was labeled as a smoking-allowed apartment. It wasn't bad, but I still wish I had paid more attention to that.
Other than the unexpected toilet situation, the biggest drawback to this place is the street noise, which is almost 24/7, and quite loud. It's in a shopping and residential district, so delivery trucks arrive very early, and partiers stay out late on the streets. Bring your earplugs.
My advice is to make sure you know how many people are in fact staying in the apartment for sure before you commit. And get clear about kitchen privileges with the host and her proxy, too.
Bring your own toilet paper, and having your own shower towel would be a good idea, too, if you have the extra room in your luggage. Bed linens were low quality, but to be fair, consistent with the nightly rate given that 3 of us were able to share one room.
- convenient location
- interesting decor
- poor host/guest communication
- 1 toilet shared with 7 persons
- street noise
