LISBOA – THE CAPITAL

Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital (after Athens), once home to the world's greatest explorers like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, becoming the first true world city, the capital of an empire spreading over all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India). The former launch pad for many of the world's greatest voyages is now where modern travelers (URL HIDDEN) of Europe's most soulful, captivating and picturesque capitals, built on a series of hills with scenic vistas from every angle.
...the city of the oceans, the only European capital with sunsets on the sea, so close to sandy beaches and with one of the world's largest state-of-the-art (URL HIDDEN) of the world's greatest natural harbors which attracted different civilizations, now reflected in its architecture and culture recalling Phoenicians, Celts, Romans, Visigoths and Moors.
...a charming visual time-warp with vintage trams and medieval village-like neighborhoods.
...a lively but serene and melancholic place with an insatiable appetite for long dinners, coffee breaks and nightlife.
...World Heritage monuments and singular museum treasures, from international design and contemporary art, to treasures from when the East met West, to the ancient art of tile painting and gilding.
...a reminiscence of the romantic decay of Venice, the exoticism of Naples or Istanbul, the laid-backness of Rome, echos of San Francisco, and Iberian (URL HIDDEN) of Europe's capitals of Romanticism, a real fairytale just minutes from the city center (Sintra).
...the safe haven of WWII that remains a peceful city in a tumultuous world.

10 Reasons Why You Should Come to Lisbon

CULTURE: It's one of the world's great historical cities, with characteristic and surprising sights, cultural treasures, and a beautiful setting that make it a paradise for walkers and photographers.

VALUE: It's one of Europe's best values -- officially Western Europe's least expensive capital.

LOCATION: It's the closest European capital to the United States and just around a 2-hour flight from all the other major European cities.

CLIMATE: Its mild climate makes it an ideal year-round destination. Even in winter, when most other European cities are freezing, in Lisbon high temperatures rarely go below 10C (50F).

RESORT: It is the only European capital located so close to sandy beaches, enabling visitors to combine culture with fun by the sea.

SIZE: It's a compact and intimate city, ideal for a short city break or a longer romantic stay, with a lively café culture and a nightlife that is one of the most vibrant in Europe.

VARIETY: Its surroundings offer an incredible variety of tourist attractions, from fairy-tale palaces in one of Europe's most romantic towns (Sintra), to world-class golf and fun in Europe's largest casino in Estoril, to surfing in Cascais or escaping to a natural park in Arrábida, to dolphin-watching in Setúbal.

GATEWAY: It makes a perfect base to explore many of Portugal's most outstanding towns and villages, from Evora to Obidos.

SAFETY: It's one of the safest European capitals. Tourists are always automatic targets in all big cities and visitors should beware of pick-pocketing in Lisbon, but serious random violent crime is practically unheard of in this city.
WELCOMING: It's a friendly city with a cosmopolitan population, welcoming to all visitors and families with children, and open to minorities and alternative lifestyles.
SANTA CATARINA & BAIXA

Baixa, or downtown Lisbon, is the heart of the city. It is the main shopping and banking district that stretches from the riverfront to the main avenue (Avenida da Liberdade), with streets named according to the shopkeepers and craftsmen who traded in the area.

Rossio Square It was completely rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755 with streets flanked by uniform, neoclassical buildings. This was Europe's first great example of neoclassical design and urban planning, and one of the finest European architectural achievements of the age (it is currently being considered to be listed as a World Heritage Site, pending much-needed renovation of many of the buildings).

It remains an imposing district, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old tramcars, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, elaborately decorated pastry shops, and street vendors selling everything from flowers to souvenirs, all lend a special charm to the area.

Watch it all from a table outside Nicola Café in Rossio Square facing the monumental National Theater and Saint George's Castle, and as you stroll down the pedestrian Rua Augusta, past the triumphal arch, into the majestic Comercio Square.

Baixa is a great place to stay, because it is central to all major sights and attractions, with excellent transport facilities and close to shops, restaurants, cafes and some museums.

Our flats of Santa Catarina are near the beautiful point view of Santa Catarina - Adamastor, Behind Camões Square, Rua do Loreto that separates Bairro Alto from the neighborhood of Santa Catarina. This point view of Adamastor, 30 meters from your door was the place where Jeremy Irons was when they directed the movie "Night Train to Lisbon"...This area of endearing streets with pastel-painted houses has a few restaurants and bars but is mostly known for its garden with a terrace offering river views. Facing the terrace, the river, and 25 de Abril Bridge is a stone figure of Adamastor, a mythical sea monster from the epic poem "The Lusiadas." There is also a pleasant cafe where locals go to admire the dawn view over the Tagus.

Fernando's apartment is at a fantastic location in Lisbon. In heart of downtown, my family and I were able to walk to all major sights (all except for a short taxi ride to Belem) and find delicious, local places to eat. Fernando's suggestions on places to eat around the apartment are a MUST! Would note that this apartment would be perfect for 2 people, 3 max. It is quite small with low ceilings, and on the ground floor where you can hear noises from the street or from people walking in and out of the apartment building. If you don't mind the above, definitely recommend for a couple nights in lovely Lisbon!

Fernando was very accessible for communication and replied very quickly. His flat was very nice and comfortable. It was much nicer than other AirBnBs I have stayed in. They accommodated our late check in and gave great recommendations for restaurants in the area.

My family stayed in the apartment for a week. I have 3 children (16,13,8) and there was ample space for sleeping. The apartment was in a perfect location and in a charming neighborhood. We walked everywhere and didn't use the tram. We even walked to the castle. Lisbon is such a great place to walk with so many cute bakeries and stores so walking is fun and entertaining. There are many bakeries close by as well as a grocery store that we frequented. There's also a fruit and vegetable store close by that sold great vegetables and olives. The apartment is very close to the metro which we took to get to train station to cascais and Belem. The only downside to the apartment was that the bathroom is quite small and lacking toiletries. There was only one toilet paper roll and minimal shampoo and soap that was left in a dispenser. We bought our own. The hot water heater was great! We have 5 people and never had an issues with hot water. We cooked many meals in the apartment and there was sufficient pots/pans/utensils. However, there was only one wine glass. We also did laundry which was convenient. There is no dryer so you need to use the clothes line which is typical for Lisbon. There were only 5 clothes pins so this was a challenge for laundry for a family of 5. Overall, I would definitely stay at Fernando's apartment again. He was very responsive to questions. Filipe met us with the keys and was very friendly and hospitable. Very pleased with this apartment.
