A single traveller's (or couple's) sun-drenched home-away-from-home in the vibrant Ukrainian Village neighborhood. Live like a local through tips from your hosts and explore the city with easy access to public transit & Divvy bike stations.

The Space

The place: West facing guest bedroom with brand-new twin mattress available in beautiful, sun-drenched full- and top-floor vintage apartment in Chicago's Ukrainian Village. Private back deck, shared backyard, tree-top views. Central air, cable, and wireless internet. There is a desk in the bedroom and a dresser and closet you may use during your stay. The guest room is ideal for one guest, but a couple is welcome to stay with us-- bearing in mind that the guest bed is twin sized and the room is cozy! Towels and washcloths are available and there is now an opaque curtain for the window to draw if you wish (it is a very sunny room, especially in the afternoon and early evening).

Your hosts: Couple, Chicago natives who recently moved back to Chicago after several years in New York. We love food and drinks and are happy to recommend our favorite places for bites/libations as well as some off the wall not-tourist destinations.

Ukrainian Village is a wonderful place to live-- tons of adorable cafes, great restaurants and bars within walking distance (we will provide you with an exhaustive list!). We are south of Wicker Park, west of Noble Square and quick bus and El rides from the lake and the loop (Blue line 6 min. walk, Chicago Avenue Bus 2 min. walk). There is a Divvy bike rental kiosk a half block from the apartment for convenient access to all corners of the city.

This is a wonderful apartment!

Guest Access

Kitchen appliances, coffee and espresso maker (both stovetop) and tea kettle are all available for your use. Kindly let us know if you plan to cook a 10-course meal though, so we can work around you. :) You have an entire closet and bureau in which to put your things, plus a shelf in the bathroom for any toiletries.

Interaction with Guests

We interact with our guests as much or as little as is preferred by our guests. After we explain apartment details, we more or less leave our guests to their own devices. There is no need to "check in" with us or explain what time you will be home, etc. We do enjoy getting to know our guests-- sometimes we'll go out for drinks or chat at the kitchen table-- but we are just as happy to let you have your space. We are glad to give directions or make neighborhood recommendations, so don't be afraid to ask. And generally, we can be called or texted with questions at any point during your stay, so long as we are awake.

The Neighborhood

We absolutely adore this neighborhood. The old houses and tree-lined streets make for great running or walking routes (we'll tell you our favorite blocks, if you're interested), there are innumerable options when it comes to restaurants and bars, not to mention great street festivals and markets in the summer.

Getting around

6 minute walk to the Blue line el trains which take you to/from O'Hare airport (45 minutes door to door) and to the Chicago loop (15 minutes door to door), as well as numerous buses and a Divvy bike station around the corner from the apartment.

Other Things to Note

There is free street parking on our block and the blocks immediately surrounding it. Depending on when you arrive, you may have to park a bit further away, though we have never needed to leave our car further than 2 blocks from our front door. Please check signs before parking, as some blocks are permit only and some days (April-November) have restrictions due to street sweeping.

  • I had a great stay in Chicago. The apartment is an absolute gem and Kate and James are warm, friendly, welcoming hosts. I wasn't familiar with the Milwaukee corridor of Northwest Chicago before this visit, and was very pleased with the number of cafes, boutiques, restaurants, etc. within walking distance. The room is quite small, but presumably you aren't visiting Chicago to spend time in a rented room. Visit soon, before Kate and James move to New York!

I think this is the perfect place to get yourself into a real Chicago experience. I spent some memorable days in Chicago, thanks!

  • I would highly recommend staying with Kate and James if you venture to Chicago. First, their apartment is very comfortable and well-located. An easy hop to and from the airport on the Blue Line and close to the myriad of fabulous cafes, bars, and restaurants in Ukrainian Village (must try = Hoosier Mama's Pie Company!). Second, Kate and James are incredibly warm and accommodating hosts. They had everything I needed there (from clean towels to fresh oranges to snack on) and were happy to offer advice about what to do and see if the area. I was there for a conference and they left a "good luck!" note the morning of my presentation, which was incredibly thoughtful. If you're looking for a great place to stay in Chicago, Kate and James's apartment is it!
