The Space

We offer a perfect place for travelers wanting an inexpensive alternative to hotels, for visiting grandparents, scholars, business people here for a few days and people transitioning to the Bay Area. Some of our more frequent guests are couples visiting their children and grandchildren in the area.

WE ARE VERY CLOSE TO SF AT MUCH LOWER RENT AND WITH MUCH BETTER WEATHER! NO MORE THAN 30-45 MINUTES DOOR TO DOOR USING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OR 20 MINUTES BY CAR, DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC.

Although we are here at the same time you are, you will experience complete privacy if that is your pleasure or friendly talk if that is better for you. The house is large enough and the bedrooms far enough apart that we rarely run into each other except intentionally.

Huge bedroom with queen bed and bath en suite. Mounted cable TV, wireless internet, window seat, refrigerator, kettle, kitchen use, washer and dryer use, beautiful garden and occasional living room use. Weekly linen and cleaning included.

We'll put out coffee, juice, fruit, cereal and bread for toasting.

In addition, we can take care of your office needs such as scanning, faxing, and copying.

One very friendly but sometimes shy mid-size dog.

LOCATION: ½ block from beautiful park and garden, 300 yards from Lake Merritt. Short walk to restaurants, theaters, Saturday Farmer's market, Oakland downtown & BART to San Francisco and cities around the bay. Commuter bus or casual carpool to SF 3 blocks away.

If we are available, we'll drive you to Oakland airport when you leave or to the BART to get to SFO.

PARKING: Shared space in our one-car driveway or garage, as available (most often it is); not guaranteed. Car-moving cooperation makes this work.

Suggestion: There is so much going on here. Go online to Goldstar to get an idea of the 100 or so plays, tours, and other exciting events; all at half price! You can sign up for free. This is a good Eastbay link for 2013:

  • Such a wonderful experience in every way. The location was easy to find and accessible to public transporation. Pat & Lynn were very accommodating and provided a very helpful sheet with information on getting around and included their contact information. The amenities were more comfortable than a hotel and their home was peaceful and welcoming. I hope to have as much luck with future airbnb experiences.

  • Pat & Lynn are warm, welcoming hosts. Immediately upon walking into their place, we felt comfortable and at home. The room is a good size, their outdoor rear deck was a wonderful, and beautiful breakfast spot and we were totally taken care of. Breakfast was good, with healthy choices and good coffee. Its central location is location is very convenient. We highly recommend this as a place to stay when in Oakland. We will be back.

  • The pictures look EXACTLY like the actual place. There are no lies here folks! Book them immediately. Their patio/deck is amazing. I regret that I didn't spend more time out there. However, I took a jog around Lake Merritt because they are SO close to it. On my first night, I ate a cheap yet fresh and delicious dinner at Los Cantaros (about 12 bucks) around the corner. There is a Safeway a few blocks away and they provide you with a map and copious notes about the surrounding area. They are so thorough! I just moved to Oakland from Washington, D.C. and I will refer all of my friends from home to The Caffreys when they come to town for a visit. During the time I stayed at their home, I needed privacy and time to think. Even though I made a big move across the country, I was also dealing with the first anniversary of the loss of my Mom. They gave me just enough space. Please note that I'm vegan and they had plenty of fresh fruit (the peaches were exquisite) nuts and breakfast options along with almond milk available for me. I wanted a few other things, so I just ventured to the grocery store to get them. The area is SO convenient! If that's not enough, you have your own refrigerator in your room to store your personal items. I don't watch much TV, but they had HBO (on a mounted flat screen) and all of the cable channels and I was hooked. :-) Their house is lively. There were pets and company over during the time that I stayed and I LOVED it! It did not feel like a hotel, yet I still received all of the privacy that I needed. Pat and Lynn are very caring and provide great advice. Your search for the best of the bay is over! Book them now and enjoy your stay. #TeamCaffrey

  • I had a GREAT stay with Pat and Lynn. Their house is wonderful, comfortable and just the right mix of private and social. Their back-yard is very pleasant as well. It was easy and comfortable to use their washer and dryer. Pat and Lynn are very pleasant to be around, had deep knowledge of the area (which was awesome -- Oakland at its best) and were helpful at all levels.

In addition to this, they were sympathetic and flexible when I had to change plans a little bit, and in some very important ways made my extended journey much easier. I highly recommend a stay with them!

ps: Pat is a connoisseur of breakfast cereals, which is awesome.

About
We are really enjoying being AirBNB hosts. We're kind of naturals at it. Pat is retired and Lynn is still working but in her own business nearby. We love to travel when we can, see friends, attend theater and movies, enjoy our many wonderful Bay Area restaurants, take walks around the neighborhood and with our dog, Chloe. Our kids, Gabriel and Liz are grown. Gabe recently married Sarah Schoomer. They're all a big part of our lives.
