At only 10KM from Amsterdam, this completely renovated old school in the middle of the country side surrounded by water and fields, including a small boat, is a well designed haven of piece and tranquility, and yet very close to the city center.
In 2010, this old school house was bought and refurbished into a modern and spacious home; perfect for families of any size. Equipped with a large open-concept kitchen, laundry facilities, 2.5 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, a play room, craft room, large living room, the interior of this house is accommodating for both children and adults.
When entering the home, you are immediately immersed into an area of natural light; the right-hand wall full of windows, back and side large glass double doors entering the garden and patios, and a large sky light beaming through the centre of the home onto the large family dining table.
The main kitchen area resides at the entrance of the house as well, allowing you to gaze upon the entire main floor and back garden while cooking a delicious meal. A separate side kitchen can be found through a door on the opposite side as the entrance, where laundry facilities, a freezer, oven, and additional refrigerator can be found.
The living room area is truly a place of tranquility and relaxation. This large open space contains a large sectional sofa, wicker chair, television and old-fashioned wood-burning fireplace. This area is ideal for accommodation of any kind; playing games, watching movies, enjoying a night by fire, or relaxing with a book - to name a few.
The rear doors off of the living area lead you to the back garden. Here you can find a large patio table and chairs on the deck, overlooking the beautiful gardens, boathouse, and country fields. In the back left corner, there is an additional table with benches along with a small fire pit for campfires.
Running along the back of the property is a beautiful stream. In summer you can watch as various boats such as kayaks, canoes, and small motor boats drift through. In winter, ice takes occupancy, allowing for large numbers of local residents to take a leisurely skate through the tranquil and stunning countryside.
Through the double doors located off of the playroom is a side patio that also leads onto the back garden. Here you can find both a large table and chairs in addition to a large patio sofa and portable barbecue. The trees and shrubbery outlining this outdoor living room provides privacy to this comfortable nook.
At only 10 minutes from Amsterdam, your family can enjoy all the pleasures of the city while simultaneously taking full advantage of the beautiful Dutch country side. Follow the cobblestone roads of Zuiderwoude through the large green fields of horses, sheep and cows and enter the quiet and friendly village. Here you will experience a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
There is a bus stop (Gouw) which is a 10 min walkfrom the house. It runs approximately 3 times per hour and will take you straight to Amsterdam Centraal; the heart of the city center in Amsterdam. The bus ride takes approximately 25 minutes and a ticket to central station costs 5 euro per person unless you purchase a blue visitors bus pass upon arriving at the main station. The website (website hidden) will assist you in finding bus times as well as any other travel methods necessary for navigating around The Netherlands. To take a taxi from the house, it will cost you around 20 euro and take 15-20 minutes.
For activities and attractions in Amsterdam, (website hidden) is a useful sight to make use of. If you choose to stay more local and possibly make use of the bikes, Monnickendam is a 15 minute bike ride away. In this town you can find grocery stores, a pharmacy, cute restaurants, etc. Marken is also a lovely little fisherman town which is a beautiful 20 minutes bike ride. This town is more built for tourists, demonstration traditional dutch culture. Volendam is the furthest bike ride away, (approx. 25-30 minutes) but can also be reached by bus or car. This is also an old fisherman/trading town on the water with many tourist type attractions as well as cozy restaurants and a bit of shopping.
The residents on the street are friendly families and elderly individuals. While passing, you will most likely be greeted with smiles and waves as they tend to their gardens or enjoy a family bicycle ride. They entire village is friendly, quaint and quiet and serve as the ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.
Our guests will have access to our electric boat, with which you can discover the area by boat and see the lake side, surrounding vilages and canals.
- Please take shoes off inside the house. Our floors are new and we would like to keep them in good shape as long as possible. With this being said, if you spill something on them by accident, please clean up right away!
- no smoking inside
- If you are leaving the house for an extended amount of time, please close the upstairs windows for the weather in Holland is unpredictable !
First of all, thank you, Meynald and family, for sharing your beautiful home with us.
We, a family of six (two adults and four kids in the age of 6, 4, 2 and 0) stayed for eight days in Zuiderwoude in August 2014.
This part of Noord-Holland is very nice with a lot of things to do and to visit.
But Meynald's house really was the icing on the cake. It was even better than we had expected. Super kid friendly, light and beautifully furnished. The pic in the site don't lie. We already recommended it to friends.
When arriving a nice bottle of wine was waiting for us on the kitchen table and during our stay Meynald kept in touch with us by WhatsApp, asking if everything was okay and if we had any questions.
Altogether, we had a really great time at Meynald's place. Highly recommended!
This is a fantastic house in a delightful little village. We visited with our 3 year old who LOVED the place.
This stay is perfect for 2 adults traveling with kids who would like a bit of space to move around in.
We (4 adults and 3 kids between 7 and 10) were quite satisfied with the house. It has a very nice layout with interesting views and angles and is tastefully completed. Vers nice beeing-at-the-home-of-friends-feeling. We enjoyed cooking and eating and sitting outside on the terasse overviewing the garden and looking into the wide and open landscape of the flat farmland. Cows and shhep were looking back. We all enjoyed our week here. some days we stayed in and around the house, opther days we spend downtown Amsterdam. The journey from the countryside to Amsterdam took us 5 min. by car to the bus stop and 20 min. by bus to Central Station Amsterdam.
To round-up the picture some remaks on the negative side. There is only one bedroom that really fits for the use of aduts. Two of us had to sleep in a relatively small space on a decent matrace on the floor. On the small terasse at the side of the house is a very nice and big white sofa which my wife would have loved to use but unfortunately it smelled anything but good.
Overall we can give a very positive rating.
Firstly, we would like to thank Meynald and his family for sharing their home with us. We are a family of 5 (kids were 6, 3, and 2) and stayed for 12 days in July 2013. We had stayed in Amsterdam the week prior so the need to go back to Amsterdam was not necessary but easily done from this location.
The communication prior to booking and arrival was excellent. Meynald was very responsive at all times. Meynald arranged for a car to take us to our first stop in Amsterdam, pickup from Amsterdam to his home, and home back to the airport. This was greatly appreciated considering we were with young kids and plenty of luggage.
The house is as described in the photos and description. It has been the best self-catering experience we have had to date. This includes stays in London, Edinburgh, Paris, Lake Como, and multiple cities in North America. The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans as was the washer/dryer area. This is important and one of the main reasons we prefer self-catering vs. a hotel.
The surrounding area was a pleasant surprise for us as there were many villages and bike trails to keep us and the kids entertained. We would highly recommend this home and hope to come back in a few years when the little ones can pedal themselves!
We stayed at Meynalds for almost 10 days and it was fantastic. It's about 11 km outside of Amsterdam in one of the most picturesque towns I've ever seen. Plenty of different animals, lakes, bike paths and as much nature as you could ask for. The house is probably the best house I've seen on Airbnb for kids. Very kid friendly. I would highly suggest people stay at Meynalds place. We also had a very nice gift waiting for us when we arrived :) The place is exactly like the pictures. It's wonderful
The reservation was canceled 21 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Thank you for commenting... we had a very urgent reason to cancel the
booking a few weeks before the booking. We have indicated alternatives to
the person wanting to rent our house and were sorry to cancel. Marcus
rented another place instead, so everything turned out well in the end.
We rented this house for a long weekend of November, and had an amazing time there! The house is beautiful (pictures don't lie!), and the location is a true haven of peace. We had a car to drive to Amsterdam (which is probably more convenient from Zuiderwoude). We also took some time to visit the splendid countryside.
We didn't meet Meynald, but he had prepared everything for us: friends of his welcomed us and remained available during the whole stay, and a little present was waiting for us on the table of the kitchen ;)
We heartily recommend this place for a stay!
The things we love are: cooking, having friends over for BBQ and sitting by the fireplace in the garden, going with a boat on our lake, reading and yoga.
My wife and I love to travel and are away a lot. We love to explore the world and have lived in USA, various parts of Africa and Europe. You are very welcome to stay here, and we will make sure there is some wine for you in the fridge and flowers on the table.
