About this listing
You'll be staying in our "Garden Room" - tucked away in the back of a 19th century Rhenish building. Have your breakfast in the living room, or, weather permitting, on a terrace outside! Relax in a quiet, homey place. Or explore lively Cologne… you're in a location with truly excellent connectivity!
We welcome you to our Orange88 (Bed & Breakfast) home! We’re an international couple, speaking English, French, Chinese and, of course, German. Knowing that your vacation time (or time while on business) is indeed precious; we are happy to help contributing to your great experience of Cologne, one of Germany’s most vibrant cities! Or, should you simply need a quiet time or prefer to be by yourself, we’re happy to oblige.
Location: Our Family House
Typical Rhenish “Three Windows House” located in the western part–of the diverse–Nippes suburb of Cologne, built in the 19th century. We are a bit north of the city center, near the “Green Belt,” stretching around Cologne. Great place for relaxing walks, sitting in the sun, or invigorating jogging…
Zoo and Botanical Garden are a good walk away, but can also be reached easily via public transportation. Take a bus from across the street to go swimming or ice-skating! Or, from the Zoo area, take a short ride by aerial tram across the river Rhine for a walk in the Rheinpark, or to soak in the hot springs of Claudius Therme.
Two windows offer views from your private bedroom into the court/garden. You may use a shared kitchen as well as the cozy living room. A private toilet is on the ground floor, the shared bath room–with WC, shower and tub–is located on the floor above you.
Interaction with Guests
The choice of privacy level is yours: Be on your own, relaxing in the ground floor of this unique house, or interact with us. We are enthusiastic about what sights and culture the city of Cologne has to offer—and our Nippes quarter—and would be happy to share our experiences. Our home is your home!
During your stay, we will be at home as well. It is on Bess we are on vacation, in which case someone in the house will help you.
We rent bikes on a daily use basis, so you can have fun in the sun! For those staying longer, we can arrange for a personalized tour of Cologne in German, English, or Chinese; charges are on an hourly basis with maximum participation of five. We can also consult you on trips to Bonn, Aachen, Münster, Mosel and the Middle Rhine area.
Two supermarkets are within three minutes walking distance of the house, two big discounters within seven minutes.
A couple of artisan bakeries are within five minutes walking distance, two commercial bakeshops within three or less! A café with outdoor and indoor seating (cakes, soups, and great ice-cream!) is open on the other side of the street with outdoor seating and in reach of our Wi-Fi…
Cologne’s only daily open-air (farmers) market is about 15 minutes away by foot, as is a shopping area (Neusser Strasse) with cafés and pubs, department store, banks, drug stores and artisan butcheries.
Eating: Don’t forget to drink the famous “Kölsch" beer typical of this city. Restaurants, from the typical “Kölsch” pub to other ethnic specialty places to eat and savor: Pick your favorite, many are in walking distance or within half an hour of our house; our in-house “Foodie Folder” will show you menus, and venues.
Close and fast: 188 m from S-Bahn stop “Köln Nippes” (S-11, and our own S-6) taking you in seven minutes/2 stops to the Dom/cathedral, and ten minutes/3 stops to the KölnMesse fairgrounds. A train every ten minutes!
Two bus-lines (142 to Ubierring via University) and 127 (Lentpark via Ebertplatz)
connecting to the Eigelsteintor (North Gate) and Severinstor (South Gate) every few minutes - the stops are less than 100 m away!
If you plan your trip by car, our house is around two km from access of a major Autobahn (A 57) connecting you to the highway ring around Cologne. We have good connections to a local car rental company nearby, should you need “A Set of Wheels” of your own.

Enjoy waking up after a quiet and relaxed sleep, next to a green oasis!
On the ground floor:

Shared double living room of 30 m2 with Sony flatscreen TV and radio, coffee table books; dining table is in one room, seating sofa and a massage chair in the other. View of the trees of the playground on the other side of the street.
Fire extinguishers and CO2 alarm devices are installed. A safety key is in the public area. Our neighbor is a medical doctor (general practitioner) in town.
And yes, you couples will be able to say: "There was an elephant between our beds!"
Late check-in (arrival after 22:00 at our door) will be charged with Euro 20 the first night; this cash payment is due the day after your arrival.
We are levied 5% "bed tax" to the city of Cologne on your stay, as well as 19% Value Added Tax (VAT) both come out of the money transfer we receive from Airbnb for your booking. Orange88 is an insured and registered business licensed to operate in Cologne.
We will not accept bookings for guests under the age of 18. If in doubt, we will need proof with a valid document showing the birthday. Even if you were referred to us by individuals, other hotels or hosting sites, we ask that you book directly through Airbnb.
There is a surcharge of EUR 10 per accompanied child, even if staying in the same bed as the parents/relatives. We have no additional crib or bed.
We can wash your laundry for Euro 8 a load; we'll operate the washing machine, and hang your clothes to dry (without warranty for discoloration, damage, shrinking, or stain removal)!
We ask for a key deposit of $48 (kept by Airbnb until the day after you leave) due our custom-built Swiss lock (in the entrance door) as its keys cannot be copied, and the whole lock set may need to be changed in case of lost keys.
Again, this is a non-smoker, pet-free, private property! If you absolutely need to smoke, please not on our grounds, but only curbside on the street!
In our home, we're conscious about our environment; we recycle and are careful using resources, specifically water and electricity! We kindly request that you remember we need to pay for utilities, perhaps a much higher price than you yourself would in your home town. Turn off lights when leaving your room and close the doors to keep the temperature while we heat!
We ask that you absolutely respect our privacy in the upstairs floors/rooms where we reside, and not enter any other rooms than the shared bathroom. If you need to see us, you have a phone number where to reach us anytime 24/7.
Despite of the fact that we only rent one room, there may be, from time to time, friends staying in our private guest room upstairs. Please bear that in mind when using the bath tub, or shower or facilities. We will introduce you to anyone staying in our house.
By the way, if you could take off your shoes and use our house shoes when moving around the house, that would be much appreciated!
We are people of good will, and trust you are the same! Enjoy your stay.
Shirley and Wolfgang are a multi-cultural couple who've lived in several countries. We speak English (with an American accent) as well as Chinese-Mandarin, French and German.
We love to eat the eastern and western way, travel and explore. We're fond of German Riesling wine and honey from all over the world.
The idea to host came after having stayed at a Parisian Airbnb of a dear friend. Now, after over 100 travel parties, we still appreciate personal life stories from guests, like the community feeling of Airbnb, and the exchange of life experiences–with folks of good will–from all over the planet.
The listing is Wolfgang's family home built in 1893, with additions in 1920, so she is a quirky and special lady!
