Lapanache panoramic hideaway studio

Apartment - Private room · Dauphin St, Gros Islet, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia

The Space

The north of Saint Lucia is very busy with lots to do daytime and night. But we still have the wonderful Atlantic coastline within walking distance and the apartment is surrounded by tropical plants and fruit trees.
The studio is hidden away up some steps. It’s a bit rustic with a kitchen on the balcony which faces Pigeon Island. It is liked by the young and young-at-heart! It has a queen-sized bed at one end of the long narrow room with a couple of small beds built in to the walls at the other end, popular with young children. All beds have mosquito nets and the windows have insect screens. However most guests find they do not need the air-conditioner.
The price is without airconditioning. Guests will pay US$10/day when here if they wish to use the airconditioner.
The studio is comfortable and clean and has a fridge, cooking facilities, toaster, microwave, kettle, cable TV, free wireless internet, insect screen and a powerful fan.The site is steep with quite a few steps and surrounded by nature.
We also have anothers studio and a 2 bedroom apartment on Airbnb also under the title La Panache
We are 20 minutes drive from Castries and 90 minutes from Hewanorra airport.
We have a great location, close to everything abut away from the hustle and bustle of the highway. We are part of the Cas en Bas Road community which is a mix of locals, tourists and residents with holiday homes.
We are a 5 minute (400 meter walk) down to the Castries highway and frequent buses to Rodney Bay and Castries. There’s a small supermarket and a bank at the junction and 2 larger supermarkets on the way to Rodney Bay. There are all styles of eating, drinking and party establishments in Gros Islet and Rodney Bay.
Gros Islet Beach is a 20 minutes walk, Reduit Beach a short bus ride and the Atlantic beaches a 30 minutes walk. Beausejour Cricket Ground is 2 km away, Rodney Bay Marina a 15 minutes walk.
We have a reception area and a carpark.
The owners live in the same 4 apartment house so you will always be secure and able to ask question. One owner used to work in hotels and the other is a botanical expert so you can get plenty of advice, especially nature/hiking stuff. And we are friendly too!

  • We had a great time staying here. Roger was very helpful to us answering questions and giving advice. I can't stress how nice it is to have an independent local to ask questions to. Hotel employees always seem to have a guy to hook you up with and in my opinion the advice is never unbiased.

The location is great in my opinion. I would suggest having a car to get around but I suppose it wouldn't be necessary depending on where you want to go. Walking to "downtown" Gros Islet is very possible (some elevation gain on the way back). To go to the shopping area in Rodney Bay or Pigeon Island is likely too far to walk (about 3 miles) and you'd be walking on a busy road. By having a car you can very quickly get around to where you want to go and we never had an issue parking anywhere and never had to pay for parking. We rented a Honda CRV. I would not get anything bigger than that and would've preferred something smaller looking back now.

Great view from the covered porch. The area is quite once it gets time for bed. There are dogs that bark in the background during the evening hours but we found that to be true literally everywhere on the island. The room has an air conditioner than can be turned on for a daily charge. We came from a very cold climate and were close to needing it turned on but got by just fine with the fans that are in the room. The pictures are true to what the room and view are like. The birds woke me up when the sun came up but again that happened everywhere we stayed (stayed at total of 3 places) and I didn't mind it since I'd go run before it got hot. The bed was very comfortable to us.

  • I wish it were easy to find such great budget accommodation like Lapanache everywhere you travel. If you don't have a car you must be reasonably fit for the ten minute climb up from the main road, but you'll be rewarded with an incredible view of the bay and see some amazing sunsets from your balcony. My outdoor kitchen was basic but well stocked with everything you could need and I miss it already. Roger is quite conscientious about keeping up his property and is a most amiable guy to boot! So glad I happened to pick Roger's place.

  • I would definitely recommend the place to all my friends and I can say that everything written in the other ratings and photos are to 100% true. The view from the terrace was absolutely stunning at any time of the day!!! ... the place is surrounded by lovely nature, clean, very calm, safe, and equipped with all you would need, (email hidden) bed. You will feel home (and even better) at any time. The walking distance described as convenient in some ratings can actually be quite tough in the heat, though ... ! So I'd recommend renting a car to anyone, although you can get around by (mini)bus very easily and frequently (during the day).

  • I've had a great stay! Location was easy to find and close to supermarkets as well as places to eat (also subway/pizza/burger).
The view from the balcony is amazing, I loved having something to eat while watching the sunset over the bay.
Roger is extremly friendly and helpful.
    I definitely recommend it

  • It was just the best choice I could have made for my holidays in St.Lucia!
    I was traveling on my own,as a woman-and I found wonderful
views over the sea,the little town and the valley from the terrace,
lots of flowers and birds in the surrounding garden, and warm, friendly and caring hosts!!Roger was helpful with all my questions about my journey. All the time someone is there in
the guesthouse,so its very safe, the rooms are charming and beaches and supermarkets are in walking distance-or to reach with
a short bus ride. The local bus station is 10 min to walk.

I felt really at home in Lapanache! And I will be back!
By the way,the best creole food I had in my caribbean holiday
was, when Henry cooked a special meal with vegetables and
herbs from his mothers garden.May be you are lucky, and he is in the mood to cook...!

  • I spent a week in early feb. 2013 there and it was just the perfect place. I was a bit in doubt whether it might be too remote, but actually everything important (wonderful cas en bas - beach, supermarket) proved to be in walking distance, and any other town on the island can be reached with public transport in reasonable time (e.g. Micoud approx. 1 3/4 hrs). That said, the view is "stunning" enough to waste a day at the apartment...
Not to forget, Henry and Roger are just the ever helpful & friendly hosts you'd fancy for your AirBnb-accomodation.

  • We absolutely loved staying at Roger's place where nature is right at your doorstep! The balconies offer stunning views at any time of day. Breakfast out in the shade was always a treat and a great way to start the day. The balconies are also the perfect place to spend a day reading or just doing nothing.
We stayed for two weeks and could have easily stayed longer. There is so much to do in the vicinity. Supermarkets and all amenities are within walking distance as well as Rodney Bay Marina with numerous restaurants. If you don't mind longer distances, you can easily walk to Rodney Bay with Reduit beach,on the Caribbean sea as well as a Cas en Bas beach on the Atlantic ocean.
Roger has been extremely helpful and has a great humour. If you are interested in plants, he is the person to talk to. He is very knowledgeable and will gladly give you advice at any time.
It was a great pleasure to meet him and we really hope to return some time soon. Thank you for everything!

I was born in the UK and studied Natural sciences at Cambridge before spending twenty years teaching in Papua New Guinea, Bermuda and Venezuela and roaming the world! I finally settled in Saint Lucia and have kept myself very busy with conservation and ecology and specialize in studying the flora. I have found over 300 species not known to be here including 10 this year which shows how biodiverse the flora is in this tiny but very mountainous island - now over 1300 species of flowering plants. I have a studio and 2 bedroom apartment renting as holiday lets so if you like natury sorts of places to stay we might be the place in the north of Saint Lucia!
