About this listing

Suki's mountain retreat is nestled up on Mt. Tam in the redwoods with beautiful views East looking over Mill Valley and out across to the East Bay. It has a private parking space, entrance and patio looking over the rose garden.

The space

Nestled among Mount Tamalpais' majestic old-growth redwoods is a chalet Hansel and Gretel would feel at home in..and a fully equipped apartment with a separate entry and private patio. It has a small kitchen, good for basic cooking. The view stretches across San Francisco Bay to the Oakland hills and beyond. The size of the property, 2.5 acres, ensures peace and quiet. Downtown San Francisco is 25 minutes – and a million miles – away. Mt. Tam's hiking, running and biking trails are at hand. Mill Valley via the Dipsea Steps is an easy 20 minute walk (and a challenging uphill return). The location is very central for tourist destinations, and very secluded and private for those needing rest and relaxation.

The legacy of the original proprietor, photographer and author Suki Hill, who lived in the home since 1972, will be carried on by her daughter, Abigail Hill.
Sadly, Suki passed away June 14, 2014.

The rental is the lower floor of a wonderful, characterful Mill Valley home, built in the late 1930's.There is a sunny patio outside the apartment with spectacular views of San Francisco Bay and overlooking rose and dahlia gardens. A short stroll down driveway leads to another "secret" garden with a small pavilion for quiet reflection or yoga. The home is also close to Muir Woods and the beautiful Hwy.1 coast. One can drive to the wine country in an hour .

Guest access

Guests are welcome to explore the property.
From the house you can access the Pipeline Trail which will take you to Mt Tam where there are endless beautiful hikes. You can also access the Dipsea Steps and trail. The steps are a nice hike into downtown Mill Valley and the trail is a beautiful hike over to Stinson Beach.

Comfy house! Amazing views. Stayed here with friends and spent a lot of time on the patio overlooking hills and water below. We hiked to Muir Woods from the house and also took the Dipsea Steps down to Mill Valley where we got yummy gelato, Indian burritos, and brews from Mill Valley Beerworks. I highly recommend staying here. Abby is a great host, very communicative, and the house comes with some cool history.

We stayed here in early May for a week-- my wife, our toddler daughter, my mom and I. This is a unique and special home in an absolutely gorgeous part of the Bay area. There are a lot of beautiful homes and locations to choose from, and this certainly ranks among the best as far as those traits go. But what makes this stand out is its deep connection to the evolving culture, landscape and history of Mill Valley. Suki Hill (look her up!) was Mill Valley's 'photographer laureate', documenting the area over several decades--from the 60s on. She moved into this lovely home in 1975 and started a family. Abby was born in this house, and today she continues the Airbnb hosting that Suki started back in 2010. The house, the books and art (much of it from Suki's work), the land, the dogs, Abby... they all gave us much more than just a scenic place to stay. So if you do stay here, by all means enjoy the lovely hikes (or drives) into Muir woods, or up to the peaks of Mount Tamalpais. Go check out Slide Ranch and Muir Beach. Have a fantastic date night at Playa. Check out the farmers market. Do all of those things, but also spend a little time delving into the past--because that's not something you can get everywhere else. Enjoy!

Abby is fabulous and a wonderful host, but the drive can be a bit challenging. We meet a number of cars on the mostly one-lane road leading to Abby's driveway. It is a bit dicey to back down a mountainous road that doesn't have guardrails. The house is definitely rustic; however, the view is fantastic.

My husband and I stayed here with our 7-month-old, and it was a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors from the convenience of a comfortable home. We were able to hike from the house to Muir Woods and Mt. Tamalpais—it was great not to have to worry about driving and parking, though it is a bit of a trek (about 2 miles before you hit the highway where the trailheads start). And you can't beat the view from the patio! It's an older home, so don't expect fancy furnishings or amenities, but it comes with pretty much everything you need for meals in terms of cookware. The kitchenette is a bit small and there isn't a ton of counter space, but it worked well for cooking meals for two adults and one infant for 3 nights. And Abby is a great host—super communicative about check-in and check-out and open to giving you suggestions about things to do, but she gives you plenty of space and totally respects your privacy. She has two dogs but we hardly heard a peep from them. For families with infants, I would note that the windows let in a lot of light, so you may have to bring additional supplies (we used beach towels) to help block the sun during nap time. And one of the bedrooms doesn't have a door (there is a folding partition), so we ended up putting our son's pack-and-play in the large closet (to block light and sound), which worked well for us but it may not be everyone's cup of tea. It's not necessarily baby-proofed for a crawling infant, but our son enjoyed looking at all the pictures on the walls. Overall, as a flexible, nature-loving family, we loved our stay and would highly recommend it!

Our family of four had a calm and relaxing two days in the mountains to end our Californian road trip. The place is absolutely fantastic especially the view. The pictures do *not* make it justice. Our five year old loved playing with Abigail's dogs and based on her recommendations we ended up spending three hours in the nicest parts of Muir Woods. Would love to come back!

This place was awesome. Abby made herself available to us through text message throughout our stay, and she helped us out with some recommendations for hikes. We were able to hike right from her house into Muir Woods only a few miles away. The living space was cozy with a couple of rooms and a nice kitchenette and full bathroom, but the best part of it was the view from the house. You're surrounded by rosebushes and redwood trees, and can see pretty much all of the North Bay Area.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay here--everything was simple and straightforward about our stay. The rooms were clean and well-kept, and the view was unmatched. We appreciated how available Abigail was via text in terms of directions, local hikes, and check-out instructions. From the house it was about a 20-30 minute walk through back neighborhoods and trails to the Muir woods trails. Excellent hike from there.

My mother Suki started doing Airbnb a number of years back and I am continuing it on. I enjoy getting to share what I feel is a very unique, beautiful piece of property with others. As well as getting the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting travelers that I would never otherwise cross paths with.
