The Space

Nestled among Mount Tamalpais' majestic old-growth redwoods is a chalet Hansel and Gretel would feel at home in..and a fully equipped apartment with a separate entry and private patio. The view stretches across San Francisco Bay to the Oakland hills and beyond. The size of the property, 2.5 acres, ensures peace and quiet. Downtown San Francisco is 25 minutes – and a million miles – (website hidden). Tam's hiking, running and biking trails are at hand. Mill Valley via the Dipsea Steps is an easy 20 minute walk (and a challenging uphill return). The location is very central for tourist destinations, and very secluded and private for those needing rest and relaxation.

The legacy of the original proprietor, photographer and author Suki Hill, who lived in the home since 1972, will be carried on by her daughter, Abigail Hill and her stalwart of stalwarts, Charles Keppel.
Sadly, Suki passed away June 14, 2014.

The rental is the lower floor of a wonderful, characterful Mill Valley home, built in the late 1930's.There is a sunny patio outside the apartment with spectacular views of San Francisco Bay and overlooking rose and dahlia gardens. A short stroll down driveway leads to another "secret" garden with a small pavilion for quiet reflection or yoga. The home is also close to Muir Woods and the beautiful Hwy.1 coast. One can drive to the wine country in an hour .

  • Dramatic setting, perched over Mill Valley. Easy walk to Muir woods, Mt.Tam.
Comfortable accommodations. Everybody was most helpful, and we had a good time staying there

  • The rain lifted just as we arrived and the view looking out over Mill Valley to the San Francisco Bay was spectacular. Our host Charlie met us on Suki's behalf and set us up quickly. The downstairs apartment was cozy and welcoming. We took a great short hike after breakfast, but we could have hiked many more miles--the top of Mt Tam is a perfect destination. We shopped for two days of eating before driving up to the retreat---but it is quite easy to drive back down to local area restaurants. We just didn't want to break the spell!

  • Stayed at the Mountain Retreat for my daughter's wedding. Comfortable, homey retreat with million $$ views and a fantastic garden. Apartment was clean with plenty of blankets.

  • We came to Mill Valley to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary and attend a family wedding at Muir Beach. The Mountain Retreat's vista views, the beauty of the Redwoods, the tranquility of our space exceeded our expectations. Be prepared for mountain road travel, but it is all worth it. Edie, the black lab, greeted us each morning and evening as if we were family. Nice. We would stay at Suki's Mountain Retreat again.

  • Suki's mountain retreat really is that, nestling in the hills above San Francisco it offers peace and quiet but the most amazing views over the city. We loved sitting outside in the morning taking in the view and listening to the birds in the garden. The walks around the house are wonderful, through the cedar tress and again looking down over the city. It was easy to get into San Francisco when we wanted to either via Golden Gate Bridge or the ferry from Sausalito which we would highly recommend. Suki and Charlie made us very welcome and had some brilliant suggestions of places to visit during our stay.

  • We had a wonderful time at Suki's home! It was a magical experience all around. Our sons enjoyed exploring and even got to play baseball in the yard on our last night with Suki's grandkids. Edie the dog, was also welcoming and kept us company for much of the time. The sunrise every morning on the patio was a highlight as were the sights and scents of Suki's beautiful gardens and fruit trees. Suki and Charlie were very gracious hosts and we felt incredibly privileged that we got to spend time in this unique place surrounded by redwoods and natural beauty. We appreciated the small touches like a children's book library, lots of homey furniture and blankets, a kitchen with everything we needed to make our meals, and posters and artwork from iconic San Francisco days. Suki offers the perfect balance of warm hospitality and privacy. Definitely recommended for either small families or couples. We look forward to returning!

  • A very restful place with amazing views of San Francisco right from your very own, private patio. Enjoyed walking down the mountain steps to town and walking to Muir woods as well. If you're a hiker you'll love the options...leave the car in park. Amazing citrus trees add fragrance to your days and zip to your drinks. A special treat.

  • Something a little more than you might be expecting; this retreat is just that, a retreat from the mundane, a retreat from the prosaic.
Your hostess is a crackerjack and the location is out of this world. As you might expect for this sort of venue there is a little effort involved on your part to get there - but once there it is sublime.
We used this as a base to visit San Francisco, a pleasant twenty minute drive away, but you could just as easily remain in a mile and a half radius and have a fabulous stay.
We have stayed in many places around the globe, but this ranks well up on the list. It would be a privleage to be able to return.

  • "Suki's Mountain Retreat" is definitely a mountain retreat and a breathtaking one at that. Ideally located for easy & quick trips to Muir Beach, Muir Woods, mountain trails and Mill Valley's town center, this retreat is also convenient for trips to-and-from San Francisco and anywhere in the Bay area. Be aware though that you may just want to stay put from time-to-time at Suki's retreat and enjoy the calm & peaceful view of the bay!

You'll have everything you'll need here. As the previous comment mentioned, it's best to first arrive during daylight for easy navigation to the abode. It doesn't take long to get used to the beautiful drive up and down the mountain though. On that note: it's best to have a vehicle for this location, especially if one wants to fully take in what the area has to offer, but it's also doable without one as long as one does the necessary research & planning ahead of time, and especially if one is planning on making more of a retreat out of the stay.

Suki is an excellent host. Her love for Mill Valley comes through in her enthusiasm of this beautiful place. I will very likely be staying here again! Thanks Suki!
