The space

We are Residencia Gorila a creative family from around the world that decided to live and work in paradise. Our home is nestled on the edge of the Mayan jungle, 20 metres from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Surrounded by nature, art and ancient Mayan culture – it is truly paradise.

We welcome you to our home and hope that you will find it as inspiring and healing as we do.

At 'Gorila' we use the money we get from our rooms to support our resident artists and the social/environmental projects we do together. For example, as I am writing, we are honoured to have our first indigenous artist from the Huichol tribe staying with us. Our (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) page has up to the minute information on who’s staying and what’s going on….

All our rooms are different so it’s worth asking and we can help you work out what will suit you best. Sometimes we have a spare bed in our artist’s residence and may be able to put you up there for a few nights – please ask.

We are not a 5 star hotel, nor do we give a 5 star service.
Remember we are a group of friends more than a hotel; we want you to have a relaxed time and want to help you with the best tips, activities and experiences. Our goal is to make you feel like a local!

We can even organise trips and experiences for you – let you in on our secret places, places off the beaten track, places that are like nowhere else on earth.

This is our home and working place, so you will see people working with their computers, cameras or painting, sometimes we might look busy, but we will always help you with what you need.

Everything is possible in Residencia Gorila!

We are 20 meters from the beach, on the jungle side of the small, private beach road. There is access to the beach directly opposite through ‘Aura’ beach club and full service from its restaurant. The operation time is form 8 am till 7 pm.

We are in the jungle so don’t be surprised if you see a scorpion (not harmful at all), crabs, geckos or any other insects.

The water in the showers comes from a well - we need to pump it up with a generator to our tank. Please use it sparingly and with respect for the environment. Sometimes it can be a little salty because we are so close to the sea.

Our energy comes from solar panels; it is limited, so it’s really important to be aware about how you consume energy. Its good enough to charge your phone and computers, but using a hair dryer will kill the batteries.

Tulum has been growing very fast the last 2 years, and PARKING is becoming a problem. We highly encourage our guests to use bikes instead of cars. We can’t guarantee a parking place but there are some places around.

Kitchen is not available from Dec-February. We offer healthy and delicious breakfast at affordable prices and our neighbour Aura restobar offer nice food and drinks.

The rooms we rent used to be apartments. That’s why they have a stove. BUT none of them are in use. So when you rent a room it does not come with a kitchen.
We have a communal kitchen that can be used for 5 US per day. In Tulum everything costs more (water, gas, storage, etc) therefore this contribution is crucial for our daily operation.

There is wireless Internet that you can use in all the areas including the rooms. It’s enough for checking emails and web pages. Don't expect high broadband, were in the jungle.

Interaction with guests

We like to say that more than guests we host friends. We like to interact as much as you are up to. We always invite our guests to participate in our recreational activities like jungle excursions, private cenotes our our famous Lion fish dinners.
We are also totally cool if you want to keep yourself to yourself and just chill...

Other things to note

Important note for NYE and January:
We have a bar open form 6 pm to 11:30 pm.
Have in mind this zone is pretty busy and full of people so its quite difficult to find a peaceful really quite place among the 10 km of Tulum beach. Unfortunately Tulum has been developing exponentially last years and seems like it wont stop. So have in mind when contacting us or any other hotel in Tulum.

For sustainability reasons our pool is empty, we use it for hang around and to watch the stars. Why should we have a pool that costs lots of energy if we have the most beautiful and biggest pool few meters across street. =)

Residencia Gorila is a one-of-a-kind place to stay in Tulum. It became a second home for us and I'll always want to return. If you want all the amenities of a resort it's not the place for you, but if you want to experience a life in Tulum it is the place. The hospitality of the community is wonderful and the views from the rooftop are incredible. It's a quick walk across the street to the beach and there are two small markets a short walk away. Moreover, every restaurant and bar you could want to visit is either walkable or a fast cab ride. You really feel hidden in the jungle. One thing to note, it can get very hot in the rooms if you're there closer to summer months. There are only ceiling fans so don't be surprised. But if you want a special place to stay in Tulum with great people, Residencia is the place. They are about to reopen their small pool which will be a fantastic addition.

We liked our stay at Residencia Gorila. It's a place situated at the most south point of the beach area, so it's a bit remote. There are quite a few restaurants, the next shop is about 15-20 min. by foot, heading to town you'll need a taxi or collectivo. The beach club in front of the residence is very quite and nice. You can stay there as long if you want if you eat/drink. We stayed at the artist cabana, which is a 2 story bamboo hut in the jungle. No AC and the bathroom was ok but not more. This is no 5 star hotel. Everyone was nice and the other rooms in the front-building looked much cleaner and nicer than ours. So make sure you know which place you are about to rent. The rooftop is gorgeous and everyone was very nice and helpful ! Definitely a recommendation. Tulum is a very expensive place!

Gorila residencia is great! The airbnb in the back needs to be redone for the price. Sebastian and Natalie were very welcoming, helpful, and great to have meaningful conversation with! The vibes are on and the beach is incredible! Alfonso made sure to check in with me even though he was not around which I appreciate!

Residencia Gorila was a pretty special place, Roberto, the guys in charge was fenomenal, he gave us tips of where to go, how much should we pay for things, it was great having a true insider. The artists in residence where super nice too! Such a great vibe in general. We'd definitely recommend it.

What a wonderful stay I had at Gorila, and thankyou Roberto for making it such a special experience for me. I was travelling alone during my stay in Tulum, but didn’t want to stay in a back packers hostel in town and neither did i and want to stay in the touristy over priced hotels on the beach. I wanted a real locals experience and indeed is what I received. The residency is beautiful place and i stayed in the penthouse which had its own private terrace. The room was exactly how described in the website and looked like its photos. Clean and perfectly equipped. Downstairs there is a communal area perfect for chilling and relaxing, also an open space communal kitchen where you can make a coffee or cook or whatever and share your stories over breakfast with the other residents. I really felt welcomed and part of the gorila family. I got amazing tips from Roberto about what to see and do in Tulum and actually one day he took us to a secret hidden cenote nearby which was spectacular and something you wouldn't find in a guide book. I loved my stay there and if you looking for something different, adventure and real local experience I would definitely recommend to stay at gorilla.

I arrived at Gurila from Cancun. I wanted to get out of the resort areas. Get into something real. I was greeted at the door by Roberto, a sweet-natured macgyver and soon to be dear friend. I was immediately hit by the delicious smells perforating from the kitchen. It felt like home immediately. After briefly meeting the gurila family, whom over the next few days would fill my experience with exciting conversation and local events to attend, I proceeded to walk starry-eyed through the colourful courtyard, up the spiral staircase, and into the penthouse. It was perfect. Simple. A HUGE private patio perfect for doing yoga or tanning topless :). I was in such awe at my good fortune that I completely lost track of my purse. Without speaking I looked at Roberto, he looked back at me, and then as fast as lightning, he ran. Down the stairs, out the door, and onto a scooter. IT MUST BE IN THE CAB!! No review can do justice to the hustle of Roberto. A modern day hero. It pains me to admit that the purse was found 5 min's later IN the room but, I had to tell the tale as it exemplifies something present at Gurila. A sense of all for one, one for all. I felt like an idiot but over the next few days I couldn't have had more fun. I lounged, napped, went dancing, ate like a queen, drank cucumber margaritas, swam in the warm ocean, got sunburnt, got sick, got better (with the help of Roberto and Nora and watermelon), watched beautiful films, and enjoyed even more beautiful spirits. Gurila for life!
