About This Listing
If your perception of Iceland is beautiful wild nature in different colors, deep and mysterious lakes and wild Icelandic horses running side by side passing hoards of sheep, you are not far away from the experience that a stay in this beautiful timber house will give you.
Located on the outskirts of Reykjavik beside Lake Elidavatn the house has a great location for those who are on a self-drive holiday and wish to experience the city of Reykjavik and surrounding countryside. It is also close to the main road to the Golden Circle and beyond.
The house has 2 double rooms and one single room with closet space in all three rooms perfect for a large family or a group of friends travelling together. The social point in the house is the large conservatory and patio area where you can relax in the evening.
All amenities are close by including swimming pool, supermarket and gym. A proud Icelandic tradition is to visit the local public bath and go to the hot pot where you will meet all generations.
There is a horse stall connected to the house and horse riding can be arranged from January to June.
Please don't smoke in the house
Thora was the perfect host! She was extremely accommodating -- she meant it when she said "flexible" check in and check out time! She prepared the house with local foods for us to sample, and a healthy supply of delicious Icelandic spring water.
The home itself is exactly as shown in the pictures -- a completely gorgeous, rustic setting. The "commute" into the City was totally doable -- 10-15 minutes, and there's never really any traffic. I would definitely stay here again!
Thora's home is in a lovely location about a 10 to 15 minute drive out of the city centre of Reykjavik. It overlooks a gorgeous lake and mountains. It is a great spot if you have a rental car and want to be close enough to the Reykavik and Golden Circle but don't want to stay in an urban area. Our favourite part of the house was a gorgeous sun room which overlooked the fields and lake. The house is lovely and rustic, although perhaps a little overstuffed with items (we accidentally broke a candle holder and reimbursed Thora for the cost). While mostly clean, it was a little dusty (for those with allergies).
Thora was a great host. We arrived very late in the night and she arranged for friends to let us in, which we appreciated. In addition, she also took the trouble to drive to the house when we had accidentally locked ourselves out, which we were very grateful for.
Lovely setting on the lake. If the weather had been better perhaps would have enjoyed the location more then we did. I was surprised to discover that the bedrooms are in a separate block - not as characterful as the house itself and a little claustrophobic. For that reason found it over-priced compared to our other stays in Iceland. Also difficult to find - even asking a few locals along the way - so make sure you have clear directions before you set off.
We stayed here on our first night in Iceland at the beginning of a 9 day family holiday. Thora gave us a warm welcome and orientation, including directing us to the local pool where we unwound from our journey. Her home is full of character, in a beautiful position surrounded by wild flowers. We were very comfortable and sorry not to stay longer.
Thora's place is gorgeous. Location is attractive, away from the city noise yet so close to town (about 10mins drive) , we have indulged ourselves with the serenity of the lake and the nature surrounding. The house is a comfortable place to be and not to mention Thora herself is a fabulous host who is friendly with a great heart. She has made an effort to meet us while we were there even though it was late.
About the Host, Thora
My name is Thora and I am a makeup artist and the manager of Icelandic Glacial Water. I am a real horse girl and have Icelandic horses that I take to competitions, fairs etc. If you are interested in horse riding a trip can be arranged but only from January to June where the horses are inside.
Besides that I travel a lot both with the job and in my sparetime. I look forward to hear from you.
