The inspiration for Sacré Cœur's design originated on September 4, 1870, the day of the proclamation of the Third Republic, with a speech by Bishop Fournier attributing the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to a divine punishment after "a century of moral decline" since the French Revolution, in the wake of the division in French society that arose in the decades following that revolution, between devout Catholics and legitimist royalists on one side, and democrats, secularists, socialists and radicals on the other. This schism became particularly pronounced after the Franco-Prussian War and the ensuing uprising of the Paris Commune of 1870-71. Though today the Basilica is asserted[when?] to be dedicated in honor of the 58,000 who lost their lives during the war, the decree of the Assemblée nationale, 24 July 1873, responding to a request by the archbishop of Paris by voting its construction, specifies that it is to "expiate the crimes of the Commune". Montmartre had been the site of the Commune's first insurrection, and many dedicated communards were forever entombed in the subterranean galleries of former gypsum mines where they had retreated, by explosives detonated at the entrances by the Army of Versailles. Hostages had been executed on both sides, and the Communards had executed Georges Darboy, Archbishop of Paris, who became a martyr for the resurgent Catholic Church. His successor Guibert, climbing the Butte Montmartre in October 1872, was reported to have had a vision, as clouds dispersed over the panorama: "It is here, it is here where the martyrs are, it is here that the Sacred Heart must reign so that it can beckon all to come".
In the moment of inertia following the resignation of the government of Adolphe Thiers, 24 May 1873, François Pie, bishop of Poitiers, expressed the national yearning for spiritual renewal— "the hour of the Church has come"— that would be expressed through the "Government of Moral Order" of the Third Republic, which linked Catholic institutions with secular ones, in "a project of religious and national renewal, the main features of which were the restoration of monarchy and the defense of Rome within a cultural framework of official piety", of which Sacré-Cœur is the chief lasting triumphalist monument.
The decree voting its construction as a "matter of public utility", 24 July, followed close on Thiers' resignation. The project was expressed by the Church as a National Vow (Voeu national) and financial support came from parishes throughout France. The dedicatory inscription records the Basilica as the accomplishment of a vow by Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury, ratified by Joseph-Hippolyte Guibert, Archbishop of Paris. The project took many years to complete.

It was wonderful staying at this apartment. The place was very tidy and had everything we needed. We appreciated the surprise box that we found when we arrived! All in all we can definitely recommend staying at this place when you visit Paris!
The apartment was wonderful. It is in a great location and very well appointed. It exceeded our expectations, and we had a great time. Suomi and Prestigious Team were very efficient and helpful. We were impressed.
We had a great stay!
The flat was perfect for us. Perfect location, beautifully decorated, well equipped, clean and tidy. The photos here are exactly what we saw in the flat. It also has an elevator which is very important for the luggage.
Suomi was very helpful with every question we had. When we got to the flat we were surprised to find a welcome card with refreshments that the kids liked very much.
The flat is very convenient for a family with kids, having 2 seperate bedrooms with comfortable beds. We asked for an extra supply of towels, and got more towels than we could use...
When we needed to leave our luggage in the flat after checkout time because our flight back home was in the evening, Suomi agreed without any problem.
Suomi 's flat is just as fancy as the person herself is. It has been definitely a great experience during our stay there with both strategic location and wonderful interior design. The only thing not perfect is that during the nights it was quite noisy. The windows were not sound-proof enough. A pair of earplugs are strongly recommended if u decide to stay. Despite, we had a nice stay because nothing is truly perfect and u cannot resist such a lovely flat deepdown.
We had a fabulous stay in Suomi's apartment...the location just can't be beat! She responded promptly to all emails and questions and her partner Nicolas met us right on time for our arrival. The apartment is clean and cozy and met all our needs. Suomi even left a welcome basket with some baby food for my daughter - very thoughtful indeed! Would definitely stay here again!
This is a great place to stay in Paris, fantastic location, the market on the same street is fantastic, all the food and drink you could need for your stay is on your door step.
Professional service provided, easy to contact and would certainly use these guys again, they even let us remain in the flat until 5pm on the day of check out so we had somewhere to wait before heading home.
Pont Neuf apartment was as described. Great location. Very close to major sights we wanted to be close to. A little noisy, but to be expected. Suomi and Prestigious team were very quick to respond and flexible. There was a welcome book with tips with pictures to help with locating anything a tourist would need. Bed was too hard for my liking, but everyone is different.
