A modern and comfortable getaway in the wonderful Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. Big backyard surrounded by lush greenery, with a BBQ, pizza oven and vegetable garden. Very central location for San Francisco visitors.
A unique Berkeley Craftsman style home from 1912, located very centrally in Rockridge, Oakland. 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, living and diningroom as well as a new kitchen opening up to the one-of-a-kind backyard with a thriving vegetable garden, outdoor pizza-oven, gas BBQ, and a big lawn.
The house can accommodate 6 people, and for groups of 6-8 people, there is a backyard cottage at the far end of the yard that can be added to the rental for $150 per night. The cottage sleeps two people, and has a small kitchen, bath and livingroom. It does not show in the pictures, as it was not yet built when they were taken, but pictures are available at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/859389. If you wish to also book the cottage, please mention that in your booking request.
The main house is 1300 sq.ft, the cottage is about 140 sq ft, and the property is about half an acre of lush rainforest-like greenery; very rare in this central location.
We are 2 blocks away from BART (San Francisco metro) and downtown Rockridge which can offer great grocery stores, coffeeshops, amazing restaurants, shops, farmer's market on Sundays and much much more.
We have plenty of parking in our driveway and street parking is free as well. Internet is included. Please note there is no TV at the house.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all kitchenware you'd find in a regular household, and appliances like dishwasher, gas stove, microwave, fridge with freezer, washer and dryer.
Fresh sheets and towels, including handtowels and washcloths, are of course provided, along with bathroom amenities like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, blowdryer etc.
The house has two private bedrooms with Queen size beds in them, and a pull-out couch in the livingroom, also Queen size. All together, the house sleeps 6ppl. The property can fit up to 8ppl if you rent the backyard cottage along with the main house.
The location is great for anything you'd want to do whether you are looking for a city-vacation, an active getaway or just a place to stay and hang out. We have local maps both for walking and biking, and there are great parks all over for hiking, running and biking.
5 stops on BART puts you down town San Francisco, and driving there takes about 15 minutes without traffic. Downtown Oakland is two BART stops away, and downtown Berkeley is a nice walk or a quick bikeride (or BART of course).
The neighborhood is amazing and awfully cute. It's very safe and offers great options for a little stroll around. There is a lot to do right here, but also very easy to get out of here and on the road to fun places like Lake Tahoe (3.5hrs drive), Santa Cruz (1.5hrs), Monterey and Big Sur (2-3hrs), or up the northern coast of the Bay Area like Bolinas (1hr) or Napa Valley and Sonoma wine country (1hr).
One thing to note is that there is a smaller freeway right across from our yard that you do hear when you're outside. You can't see it for all the trees, but you can hear it. It is more of a constant hum rather than annoying loud noises, and you do get used to it pretty quick. It does take away the feeling of being out in the quiet countryside, but does not obstruct any conversation or activity.
My husband and I might stay in the backyard cottage while you're here, depending on the time of your stay, and whether or not you request to rent this as well. The cottage is completely self-sufficient so we'd be entirely out of your way, but we'd share the driveway.
Guests will have full, private access to the whole house except the basement. Entrance to the basement is outside of the main house.
Guests will also have full access to use the yard, patio and kitchen deck as they please throughout their stay.
Interaction with Guests
If we are around, I'm happy to provide some great tips and pointers on what to do in the neighborhood, along with restaurant recommendations etc, or help with anything you might need during your stay.
As mentioned above, my husband and I might stay in the cottage on the property. We are gone most of the day for work and tend to take off on weekends, but are happy to help with any info or questions while here.
Rockridge is one of the best neighborhoods in Oakland. It has a slew of local shops and markets including vegetable markets, a butcher, wine shops, bakeries, cheese shops, coffee shops and ice cream places, and several grocery stores including Trader Joe's and a brand new Safeway. There are lots of amazing restaurants and a wonderful Sunday farmer's market just a couple blocks from the house.
BART, the San Francisco Bay metro-system, is two blocks from the house and there are Transbay buses going in to San Francisco right outside our driveway.
Parking is included in a private driveway.
Getting to and from the airports (OAK and SFO) is really easy, either by BART or by car. The on-ramp to the freeway is half a block down the street so it's generally easy to get around.
Other Things to Note
If you are looking for a place to hold an event or a gathering of 10 or more people, we are open to that, but separate event fees apply. Please note what kind of event and the number of guests in your message, and we'll respond with applicable rates.
Plan to bring the majority of your own food and drinks, but feel free to take advantage of anything that is in the fridge and pantry that you might need. Seasonal vegetables are available in the garden and you are welcome to help yourself!
No parties, events or large groups are permitted without a specific booking of such. We'd like to stay courteous to our neighbors.
No smoking inside.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome, although we do prefer they stay off the furniture. There is a dog-run in the back where you can put your dog while you are out. No cats please, we have people with allergies living in the house.
We truly enjoyed the house. It has:
* Great location: close to Bart - Rockridge station, and most importantly, Berkeley Bowl (supermarket)
* Private backyard - beautiful too
* walking distance to restaurants and coffee shops
Thanks Marianne !
My family had a great stay at this place. Marianne and Sam are wonderful hosts, and we're excellent communicators leading up to and throughout the stay. They were quick to address any issues and were there to help with questions...plus they have a very well put together folder for guests with local area info and house info.
The house is located in a nice area with lots of shops and restaurants. Great spacious private yard to escape from the city when your fun is done. There was easy access to BART, making the location great for airport travel. Quick and easy access to San Francisco by BART as well. If driving, freeway access is also convenient.
All in all, I highly recommend booking your stay in the Bay Area with Marianne and Sam at this beautiful property.
I would most definitely recommend staying at Marianne's and Sam's house. First of all, Marianne responded in a timely manner and gave detailed instructions, as well as pertinent advice and information. I never met Marianne, but her husband Sam came out to greet us. Their Craftsman-style house is charming and very clean. We loved all the character and nice touches they've added to their place. Even though there is only one bathroom, all five of us were able to shower with hot water for all. The location is ideal--just a 5 minute walk to BART in a safe neighborhood (even at night). There is a nice deli and bakery near the BART station. If we ever return to San Francisco/Oakland we will try to stay here again. Thanks for being great hosts!
We had a great stay at Marianne's. We were visiting our son who lives in a small studio so it was nice to have a place to relax together. Loved the comfy couches in the living room! Kitchen and bathroom are great and we slept well. The house is close to the freeway so it is a little noisy outside but the greenbelt and gorgeous trees make up for it. Inside the house was very quiet. The location was convenient to Oakland, Berkeley and the city. Love the East Bay! Nice and green and the neighborhoods are great. Marianne and her husband stayed in the small house in the back of the garden. They were very unobtrusive and welcoming.
My husband and I, along with our son and daughter-in-law spent 10 days at Marianne's home. We felt so comfortable and had everything we needed. With the house being set back from the street, it was very quiet and secluded. It was great being close to the BART and all the shops and restaurants. We really enjoyed the fireplace for the cool mornings and late evenings, as well as the outdoor fire pit. We used the outdoor pizza oven and had a great time cooking homemade pizzas. Also was nice having the fresh herbs for cooking. Marianne and Sam were GREAT hosts and we all enjoyed meeting them. We would definitely deal with them again when staying in this area!
marianne's craftsman house has made me and my family feel very much at home. the experience has been very positive, the house is complete with appliances and dishes refined and suitable for families like mine. the garden is a space relaxed and informal, in which my children enjoyed playing, even with sam, husband of Marianne, who also gave me valuable guidance for the journey. attention to detail, the ecological culture of the owners, the vegetable garden from which we could draw added "flavor" to our trip. the neighborhood is very quiet, with nice shops where you can find just about anything. san francisco is a complex city to visit and return in the evening in "our house" was the most relaxing part of the holidays.
My family of three spent a nice chunk of time living in Marianne and Sam's wonderful world and we were all sad to leave! I think my five year old daughter said it best: "It's like we are living in the forest, but we're right in the middle of a city!" The huge backyard surrounded by green, with a hammock hanging between 2 redwoods, vegetable garden, plum trees and pizza oven make this place a destination in and of itself, but the surrounding Oakland neighborhoods of Rockridge and Temescal just add to the bounty with shops, a top notch farmer's market and insanely delicious restaurants all minutes away. The BART station is a 5 minute walk from the house, making trips into the city super easy and the east bay is so full of things to do (especially with kids) that you may never even head over to the colder, foggier SF side of the bay. Marianne and Sam are also living an exemplary sustainable life, with their own compost, grey water irrigation system and luxurious handmade soaps, lotions and detergents. It really is a little slice of paradise. They were staying in the Tiny House while we were there and I really enjoyed getting to know them a bit-- they are a lovely couple, welcoming and easygoing. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

I grew up in Norway, but moved to California in 2007 for grad school and have stayed here since. I live a pretty standard Bay Area life working in the sustainability industry, and taking advantage of the great outdoors around here. Love going on trips to new places, no matter how near or far away. I just returned from a 15-month trip around the world and I missed hosting while I was gone, so I'm excited to get back into it. Getting to host people and help them experience the true Northern California and all we have to offer here is great fun to me.
