Clean, comfy home ... an inviting retreat. On a quiet, tree-lined street with plenty of free parking. Breakfast cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, and juice come with the room. Ten minutes to the airport or downtown; twenty to the nearest beach.
This is a cozy, corner room in my 3-bedroom house. Simply furnished with a full-size bed, it has a built-in closet and large windows that offer plenty of light and cross-ventilation.
The room is cooled by a small fan or window-mounted air conditioner in Spring and Summer. Fall and Winter it’s heated by radiators.
Just across the hall is the shared full bathroom. This has the original cast iron tub combined with a shower. There's plenty of hot water!
Seventy-years-old, the house is well maintained and very comfortable. Surrounded by flower and veggie garden beds, there's also a large shade tree out front that helps keep things cool.
(NOTE: For those with allergies - me included - this house has been a non-smoking, pet-free environment for at least the past 15 years.)
What I offer is a relaxing, home-away-from-home experience. Light and bright, this is a peaceful place to be.
The whole house is yours, including the kitchen, where there’s plenty of room for storage in the frig and cabinets. You're welcome to use the washer/dryer down cellar. Wireless high-speed internet reaches everywhere.
Interaction with Guests
I love welcoming guests into my home. I’ve lived in Maine since the early 70’s, so I can help with directions to almost anywhere. I have maps, menus, brochures, and a list of my own favorite places to recommend.
I live in Deering Center, the largest Portland neighborhood immediately west (inland) of the city. It includes a small, locally stocked market, 3 fine restaurants, 2 coffee shops, a post office, library, 4 parks, and more. Everything is within a 10-minute walk.
For your car there's plenty of free on-street parking. The bus stops at the end of the street. (I have free bus passes for guests. If you'd like them, just ask.) A taxi from the airport costs about $10. Bikes from nearby shops rent for ~$25/day, $125/week. Driving time to downtown Portland or the airport is 10 minutes …… to nearby beaches (7 of them): 20-30 minutes …… to LL Bean: 25 minutes …… to Boston or New Hampshire's White Mtns: 2 hours …… to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park: 3 hours.
Other Things to Note
This is an "Instant Book" guest house, which means .... If on the calendar you see the room is available for your dates, you've reviewed the full listing, determined this is the place for you, and you're ready to go, just click “Instant Book” (top right), and you're room is reserved. I’ll be in touch soon.
Leaving town later then the check-out time? Need somewhere to put your bags? I'm happy to hold them for later collection.

Great experience! Doug's home is immaculately kept. It is warm and welcoming. The proximity to downtown Portland and to the public buses was perfect since I was visiting the city without a car. Doug is helpful and informative. I definitely hope to stay the next time I am in town.
Do come back, Colleen! And thanks for mentioning the buses. Reminds me to tell folks that, lately, a number of guests have used them. All say they're quick and easy. The stop is a 5-minute walk from my house. The #4 buses run every half hour to town. And on weekends they take less than 15 minutes in or out. NOTE: To encourage use of our Metro bus system, beginning in May I'll be providing FREE day passes to any guest who'd like one.
We spent two great nights at Doug's house! Doug was very welcoming and he spent some time giving us advices and suggestions for our road trip in Maine. The house and bedroom are very comfortable. Lots of respect in this house! Thanks again Doug for your hospitality.
We strongly recommend this address for those looking for a close to portland downtown location at a very good price.
Staying at Doug's was great. He has a nice and cozy house in a safe neighbourhood.
Lovely place to stay. Very clean and quiet house. This is our second time staying with Doug while in Portland and we're happy. Will return on our next work trip to Portland.
Doug is an incredibly gracious host in a wonderful city. I would not hesitate to stay here again!
an authentic Maine experience. Doug was very informative about Portlands "to dos", very nice generous hospitable host and cozy accommodations.
Sixty-years-old, I'm "Pop" to 3 grown children, all very special to me. I work as a nurse at a nearby hospital and love patient care. I'm also a hospice volunteer. I enjoy working with my hands (gardening, carpentry), riding my bicycle, scootering around town, or motorcycling the back roads of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. I also enjoy hiking, kayaking, sailing, swimming, and scuba diving. I especially like hanging out with good friends and meeting new people.
