The Neighborhood

Monti is the name of one of the twelve Rioni of Rome, rione I. The name literally means mountains in Italian and comes from the fact that the Esquiline and the Viminal Hills, and parts of the Quirinal and the Caelian Hills belonged to this rione. Its logo consists of three green mountains with three tops on a silver background.
Today the Esquilino, Castro Pretorio and Celio districts do not belong to it anymore, but it has kept its name.
In ancient times the rione was densely populated: in Monti there were the Forum Romanum and the so-called Suburra (meaning suburbs in Latin): this was the place poor people lived, full of disreputable locals and brothels.
In the Middle Ages the situation was completely different: the Roman aqueducts were damaged, and it was very difficult to bring water to Monti since it was on the hills. Hence many inhabitants moved to Campus Martius, a lower level part, where they could drink the water from the river Tiber.
From the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the rione remained an area full of vineyards and market gardens. Monti was not densely populated because of the lack of water and because it was quite far from the Vatican, the center of Christian culture. The area did not become abandoned thanks to the church of San Giovanni in Laterano and the constant high number of pilgrims.
Still in the Middle Ages the inhabitants of Monti, called monticiani, developed a strong identity: their Roman dialect was different from that spoken in the other rioni. Their main enemies were the people from the other rione with a strong identity, Trastevere, and they often used to fight with one another.
Then, with growing urbanization at the end of the 19th century after Rome had become the capital of a united Italy, the great changes of the Fascist period completely changed the appearance of the rione. In particular, between 1924 and 1936, a large part of the rione, consisting of small streets and popular houses, was destroyed to make way for the Via dei Fori Imperiali (the street artificially dividing the Roman Forum and most of the Imperial forums) and the archaeological buildings of the Forum Romanum were excavated.
Thanks to its position, Monti is full of archaeological sites such as:
-Ludus Magnus (the gym for gladiators)
-Nero's Domus Aurea
-the baths of Trajan
-the baths of Titus
-part of the Forum Romanum
-markets of Trajan

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This is an absolutely superb B&B! Federico was a gracious and attentive host, and he was patient in answering all my questions, as this was my first time in Rome. The location of the B&B is perfect both for exploring the city on foot, or for taking public transport anywhere in the city. Everything you need is within just a block or two of the B&B, including the official tourist office, bakeries, a Farmacia, and the main train station, and you are only 10 minute's walk from the Coliseum and the Palatino. The rooms themselves were a welcome introduction to the city, as they were very well appointed, and the free breakfast has pastries from the bakery downstairs. Overall, I don't think you could not ask for a better combination of hospitality, convenience, and comfort. I will absolutely stay here again when I return to Rome!

  • Federico (And his mother!) were great!!! He was very thorough, gave me a map, guide for the trains and recommended his favorite restaurant. Which I went to by the way, it just a few blocks away and it was amazing. When I arrived my room wasn't ready but Federico was great he said I could wait just a little or he can give me another room..I chose the other room which was the St. (website hidden) was beautiful just as pictured on the site! Actually alot more spacious..Perfect location close enough to the termini train and about a 15-20 min walk to all the major sites. Its nice since its not in a tourist area-felt more like home than anything. Federico was always accessible and helped me quite a bit when I had questions or needed assistance. The kitchen was stocked with croissants and other goodies. Great expresso, cappucino! Also the room had a mini fridge stocked with water and juice which was great and convenient. I had a wonderful time and would highly recommend!I hope to return in the future!

  • Wow. Frederico, his family and their B&B was fantastic and really made my time in Rome just amazing. He was friendly, extremely helpful and the accommodation was really high class. Clean, modern and so well appointed. Good location for hitting all the sights and close to public transport, yet very quiet at night. Air conditioning worked well too.

I will definitely be back to Rome and Frederico's place. It really was better than I was expecting and my expectations were high.

Gear work Frederico and again, many thanks.

  • Amazing location and the room/shower/pantry all very modern and nicely decorated (rare in Europe!) We would strongly suggest any of our friends who want to visit Rome to stay with this B&B. Don't forget to try the traditional bakery shop downstairs... it's very good too!

  • We loved this place.
    Perfectly located and so comfortable.
Everything we needed. Very happy to recommend it.

  • We stayed in the Trevi Fountain room in Domus Alberti and it felt like a stay at a swank hotel rather than a B&B.

The location was ideal - close to historic sites, eateries, shops and a Metro station - especially since we only had a couple days in Rome.

The modern bedroom and bathroom were spacious and spotless. Having the ability to help ourselves to anything in our fridge or the well-stocked kitchen was a treat!

Federico is a warm and responsive host. While he was unable to meet us because we arrived on Ferragosto, he always stayed in contact to ensure our stay was going well. He arranged for Nathalia to greet us, and she's an absolute sweetheart. He also provided us with some helpful information about popular tourist attractions. Check-in and check-out was a breeze.

    Thanks for a wonderful stay!

  • I cannot say enough about our recent stay at our B&B Trevi Fountain accommodation! Federico was the perfect host, greeting us when we arrived tired after flying from California, and making us feel so welcome. The room was a nice size, very clean, with a comfortable bed and adequate bathroom. The location was perfect with it's proximity to train and bus service. We felt like we could go anywhere in the city with ease. We had a great experience there. . . . I've already spread the word about this particular place and about Air BnB in general.
