The Neighborhood

------NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW------
Monti is the name of one of the twelve Rioni of Rome, rione I. The name literally means mountains in Italian and comes from the fact that the Esquiline and the Viminal Hills, and parts of the Quirinal and the Caelian Hills belonged to this rione. Its logo consists of three green mountains with three tops on a silver background.
Today the Esquilino, Castro Pretorio and Celio districts do not belong to it anymore, but it has kept its name.
In ancient times the rione was densely populated: in Monti there were the Forum Romanum and the so-called Suburra (meaning suburbs in Latin): this was the place poor people lived, full of disreputable locals and brothels.
In the Middle Ages the situation was completely different: the Roman aqueducts were damaged, and it was very difficult to bring water to Monti since it was on the hills. Hence many inhabitants moved to Campus Martius, a lower level part, where they could drink the water from the river Tiber.
From the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the rione remained an area full of vineyards and market gardens. Monti was not densely populated because of the lack of water and because it was quite far from the Vatican, the center of Christian culture. The area did not become abandoned thanks to the church of San Giovanni in Laterano and the constant high number of pilgrims.
Still in the Middle Ages the inhabitants of Monti, called monticiani, developed a strong identity: their Roman dialect was different from that spoken in the other rioni. Their main enemies were the people from the other rione with a strong identity, Trastevere, and they often used to fight with one another.
Then, with growing urbanization at the end of the 19th century after Rome had become the capital of a united Italy, the great changes of the Fascist period completely changed the appearance of the rione. In particular, between 1924 and 1936, a large part of the rione, consisting of small streets and popular houses, was destroyed to make way for the Via dei Fori Imperiali (the street artificially dividing the Roman Forum and most of the Imperial forums) and the archaeological buildings of the Forum Romanum were excavated.
Thanks to its position, Monti is full of archaeological sites such as:
-Colosseum
-Ludus Magnus (the gym for gladiators)
-Nero's Domus Aurea
-the baths of Trajan
-the baths of Titus
-part of the Forum Romanum
-markets of Trajan

  • I spent two nights in Rome at Domus Alberti with my little son in the Navona Square room. I think we could not find anything better than this place. It was exactly what we needed for a perfect stay. I can see that Domus Alberti has already a lot of positive comments, and I can only certify by myself that all what you read in the other feedbacks is absolutely true. The apartment and the room are lovely, spacious and perfectly clean, including the bathroom. Everything looks really pretty new! The location is excellent: close to the train station, and basically walking distance to anywhere downtown Rome . Having the breakfast room open all day is actually an excellent service, and it is very nice coming back and find snacks and drinks in the fridge that you can freely enjoy. Federico is an excellent host: very kind and friendly, available to provide any kind of help, assistance and information. Will I return to Domus Alberti next time in Rome? Certainly YES, no doubts on this.
Bravo Federico, il tuo B&B è decisamente eccellente, non potevamo chiedere di meglio: sarà un piacere raccomandarlo ad amici, perché te lo meriti proprio. Ti auguro tutto il meglio. Complimenti.

  • Excellent B&B and host! The room was very large, modern, well-maintained and close to many key locations and the metro. Federico has done such a wonderful part in providing his guests with introductions, maps, personal recommendations, and a great deal of hospitality. Without hesitation, I have recommended this place to my colleagues who will be in Rome for business in the coming weeks. I strongly recommend this B&B and will definitely look forward to booking again!

  • My wife and I had a wonderful stay in Rome and Federico couldn't have been a better host! The Domus Alberti is a perfect place to enjoy you vacation, central to nearly everything (we walked to the Coloseum and Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and the Pantheon) and a great area for shopping. The rooms are absolutely spotless and the breakfast was a welcomne start to our mornings. It is obvious that Federico takes pride in his property!! We hope to return sometime soon and highly recommend the Domus Alberti!

  • Just walking into Domus Alberti you know that this is a different B&B. The surroundings are welcome and inviting. Federico greats you and goes through an extensive process showing you your room, breakfast room, the area on a map and answering all your questions. He is a fantastic host.

One of the previous reviews I read before booking said this B&B resembles a 5 star hotel and that is absolutely true. With well appointed art & furniture, WiFi, closet, great bathroom, and amenities you will feel more than "right at home". The care and detail that has gone into the accommodations, and the assistance given are above many hotels.

The location is near the train terminal (Roma Termini) and very accessible to the Metro, and close to Piazza Republica off Via Nationale, a great central location.

I would stay with Federico again. I recommend Domus Alberti and any of the rooms for a wonderful stay in Roma. Enjoy your holiday!

  • Federico is just a great host. For the reception, or for every advice, it was come in handy. I appreciated to receive a message in the middle of the travel, to know if all is OK (and it was).
To sum up = great location, clean, bright, spacious, and it's very well situated in Rome. Breakfast at will, fridge in the room, housework done every morning ..... it was just perfect.
So no hesitation, go blindly !!!!!! You won't be disappointed

  • La dolce vita! I can not recommend Domus Alberti enough! 5 stars!

Federico is just the warmest, kindest host and was so patient with my change in arrival time (I missed my flight!). He even asked me to let him know if he could help in any way.
On arrival Federico took the time to show me around the B&B and show me how to work everything. He gave me a personally printed guide to Rome which included restaurant recommendations, directions, public transport info etc. Such a nice gesture!
Nathalia the maid/caretaker is just so lovely. She saw me on the street as I was hailing a cab to leave and came up and greeted me by name and kissed me farewell on both cheeks! Very Italian!
The B&B itself is very centrally located - I walked everywhere!
The decor is modern and the rooms airconditioned, spacious and clean. The memory foam bed (most comfortable bed ever), black out blinds and cromotherapy shower were luxurious touches that I definitely appreciated having just come off a crazy tour in Spain.
Complimentary high speed WIFI and unlimited use of the breakfast room were another plus. There is seriously nothing that Federico has not thought of! Everything is perfect.
Unfortunately I only had 2 nights at Domus Alberti before embarking on another tour but I would definitely stay there again if lucky enough to visit Rome again.
Domus Alberti is the best place to stay in Rome. In fact, in 5 weeks of travel through Europe no other hotel has topped it. I only wish there were more hotels of this standard and service. Such great value for money and run by beautiful beautiful people.

Definitely stay here. You won't regret it!

  • Federico was a lovely host and very friendly/helpful! The room was very clean and modern. Having a little fridge was a bonus! There was a lot of space to move around and put bags & suitcases. The location is great, 10 to 15 mins walk to most sights. Felt very safe at night. Supermarket and ATM only steps away. 5 mins walk from Rome Termini.
    Thanks again Federico!
