Public bus transportation is within 3 blocks on the 16 bus ($1.25 or $3.00 for day pass). For faster travel, a car or bicycle is highly recommended. Driveway and street parking are plentiful. Several cafes, restaurants, drug stores, social venues and small parks are located within a 2-mile radius. My home is a short five-minute drive from bustling Magazine and Freret Streets—must-visit locales for unique New Orleans shops and fare. I'm a 7-10min drive from the French Quarter and Bourbon St ($10 cab ride +tip). The streetcar located on St. Charles is(1.3 miles away). Tulane, Loyola, Xavier, Audubon Park and Zoo, City Park, museums and many other notable attractions are only a 10- to 15-minute drive away.
Jay was very accommodating and friendly. We contacted him on a Thursday night about a Saturday afternoon arrival. He had lots of suggestions for restaurants and attractions.
The neighborhood was further from social activity than we had expected. I'd definitely say you need a car for this location to work.
The rooms were somewhat less private than expected -- louvered doors between rooms, rather than regular doors. Bedrooms were clean and well cared for, but shared spaces (bathroom, kitchen) needed work. The fact that we gave so little noticed may have been a factor.
I stayed with a friend at Jay's place for 4 nights. He is an awesome host and knows tons of places to go. He picked us up from the busstation at arrival and dropped us off when we left. Also he took us to Bourbon street and told us where to go and where not to go. We attended the Bayou Boogaloo Music Festival after his recommendation and it was really cool to experience a true NOLA Music Festival.
All in all, I would definitely recommend Jay's place!
Jay was an incredible host! He has such a fun, kind, and easygoing attitude. Unfortunately, we had some car trouble, so our time in New Orleans was cut short. However, Jay was super helpful, and even gave us a ride into town (thanks again)! The Monte Cristo was beautiful, and in a very pretty area just outside of town. The room is clean and incredibly comfortable..we didn't want to leave! If we are ever back in New Orleans, we would look to stay in the Monte Cristo first!
Jay is an extremely cool and helpful host. He knows what's happening in his city and indicated a couple of great venues to us (crawfish festival was just too good).
We had a fantastic time in new Orleans, and Jay was a wonderful host! The house was very comfortable for three guests, with beautiful historic details. We didn't rent a car during our trip, but it was a very short walk to the bus stop. The neighbors were very friendly, and greeted us as we walked by, so we felt very safe in the area. Jay was a font of helpful information, had tons of maps and tourism flyers for us to look at, and suggested local bars and tours to take. At the end of our trip, Jay even called a cab for us. He was great, and we highly recommend staying at the Monte Cristo!
We had a wonderful stay at Monte Cristo. Jay has nice home and was an excellent host, making sure we had everything we needed. The house is situated in a nice neighborhood. Like others mentioned, the location is best if you have a car as it's a little far from public transportation, there is plenty of street parking. We'll look Jay up next time we're in town!
We spent some great days in Jay's house "The Monte Cristo", that was clean and very comfortable. Jay was helpfull all the time and gave us couple of good advices where to go and what to see.... We would definitely come again:-)
Staying at the Monte Cristo was a great experience! Jay is the best host you could ask for. He's very knowledgeable of New Orleans and willing to give you plenty of advice, he even gave us some great recommendations for bars/restaurants/attractions that a typical out of town tourist may not be able to discover on their own. The Monte Cristo itself is a charming in house in a nice neighborhood. Jay did an amazing job at making us feel at home and very comfortable. I would recommend to anyone to stay at the Monte Cristo for a an affordable stay, lovely home, and fantastic host!
The Monte Cristo was indeed a very flair pad! Jay was a great host and accommodated us despite late notice. He also gave us lots of tips of bars in the area, and how to get there.
Our stay in Jay with New Orleans was wonderful. He was so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. He drove us down to Magazine St. in his car, "the beast", and made sure we knew the best places for food, music, and fun. We felt safe walking around the neighborhood and riding the bus during the day and it was easy to take cabs at night. Jay is an awesome host, we loved him!
