About this listing
1 bedroom / 1 bath fully equipped penthouse in the heart of downtown Memphis, walking distance from city attractions, restaurants, and nightlife. Large windows allow a stunning view of the surrounding city from every room of the unit.
The Exchange Building, completed in 1910 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was refitted in 1996 to house 202 attractive efficiencies, one and two bedroom apartments, a penthouse, and handicap accessible units. While the building has undergone a series of renovations, every effort has been made to preserve its historic features, such as the original mosaic tiles, an early-1900s era Tennessee marble staircase, the elaborate plasterwork, and the granite surfaces. The towering marble ceilings of the lobby exude the elegance of downtown living.
The apartments provide a homey feel with a personal touch and high-quality amenities. Several of the units located on the higher floors provide our residents a spectacular view.
Situated at an unbeatable location, our apartments are great for a weekend getaway. Let yourself be inspired by the view and invigorated by the bustling and lively neighborhood. Interaction with Guests
Due to the increased interest in my apartments, I have hired on additional staff to help ensure a pleasant stay for my guests. I travel often, so I have a front desk staff with keys to all of my units so that you can check in at any time of the day with ease. The front desk also has access to the apartment maintenance and housekeeping crews between 9a and 9p daily. When I am in town, I try my best to meet and interact with all of the guests who stay in my apartments. I look forward to the opportunity to meet and host you!`
Located in the heart of downtown Memphis, you will be walking distance from most attractions, restaurants, live music, and beautiful parks.
Almost everything worth seeing is within walking distance of our building. The world famous Beale Street is a short 7-8 minute walk away.
Uber is very active in Memphis. This is a great option for shopping and outings further away!
On Main Street, there is a trolley that can take you to all of the wonderful restaurants and shops at South Main (or anywhere along Main that you would like to go!).
There is also a public transit bus stop on our corner and the city's cabs will also provide transportation from here!
Other Things to Note
While this is a pet friendly building, please inform me prior to arriving should you plan to bring a pet. Thank you!
This building houses many other residents. Please be courteous and keep excessive noise to a minimum throughout your stay.
Smoking is not permitted in any of my airbnb apartments. Evidence of smoking, candles, or incense will incur a fee for cleaning.
I didn't get to meet the host since I only stayed one night and came in late. I was greeted at the bottom with the desk clerk. It definitely feels like your staying at a hotel since there are so many Airbnb listings in the apartment, but it's not awful. Just know that finding this particular room can be tricky. You have to go through a hall that is unlisted after getting to the top floor. The bedroom is small, but the view is good. Nothing special about the stay so I don't know if it's worth $150, but it was clean and a good place to crash.
Wonderful views, seamless check-in, great location, secure access....highly recommend!!
Very cool historical building with an amazing view of the Mississippi River. Terrific location. Super friendly, helpful staff. We'll be back
Sardor's apartment is in a great location and had a spectacular view. It had everything you need and the staff was very helpful. We would stay again!
Our one night stay was very nice. The place was as expected.great view and location. Others were right, more like a hotel, but still very nice.
Beautiful old building. It's a short walk to Beale st. The room was clean and looked just like the pictures. The view was AWESOME! Parking garage right next door on 2nd was $8 a day. Staff at the exchange were very friendly. My only complaint is that the bed was pretty worn out, kind of sagging in the middle and very little support. Other than that, I have no other concerns. We would definitely stay there again.
Let's be clear: this is a hotel. And it is not a great one.
I did not realize this from the listing, so I was a little bit disappointed. The building does seem "grand" when you enter, if a bit old and creaky. Then you are greeted at the front desk and realize this is not an apartment building. That is to say, I would not describe it as "a luxury penthouse" with the subtitle "entire home." It is a hotel, plain and simple. In context the host's photo icon makes it look like a couple who live in an apartment penthouse, which I apparently misunderstood.
A few nit-picks:
The toilet was clogged and we had to use the women's room across the hall.
There were no complimentary soaps, etc.
The mattress was small and of poor quality.
The pillows seemed full of cotton balls.
The television was not set up.
It lacked in the kind of atmosphere one expects from Air BnB.
I wish we had stayed at the Peabody several blocks away, where we ended up hanging out, in actual luxury with piano players and all.
On the plus side, it was relatively cheap and not crowded.

About the Host, Sardor
I was born in Uzbekistan and raised in Memphis. I'm the middle child, with 2 older brothers and 2 younger sisters -- and recently a 5 time uncle! I've been fortunate to travel the world in my early years and learned a lot about the different cultures around the world. I enjoy learning about geopolitical history, architecture, and technological advancements that benefit the myriad societies around the globe. To me, Memphis is an exciting city that competes with the great cities of the world as a worthwhile stop for play and leisure. Allow me to host you in my apartments, located in the historic Exchange Building in downtown Memphis.
UPDATE: Due to the increased traffic, I hired additional help to make the check-in process more convenient for my guests. The lobby now has a staffed Front Desk, where you will be able to get any assistance, should you need it (24/7). I hope to see you while you're in Memphis, but I do travel a lot and sometimes I miss out on meeting my guests personally. I hope you have a wonderful stay at The Exchange and please don't hesitate to contact me via Airbnb should you need anything.
