The Space

Quiet, green-abundant fruit trees and surprise harvest or special treats. Wood deck, also has bench seating, to lounge. Large open areas to relax- you decide which- chair, hammock, rocker, glider, etc.

Night time Church services are heard in the distance only a few nights a year. The speed bumps protect children and the speeding drivers, my neighbors are nearby but not noisy or visible-mostly. I love the Macaw, Parrot and Cockatoo birds but they can be loud in the early morning hours. Do please bring some kind of noise cancellation device if you don't want to hear the jungle sounds, roosters, horses, the coqui's and other rainforest sounds

Guest Access

Two bedrooms each with full size regular beds -(El Sol has AC), Bed linens, bath towels-bring your own beach towels;
Livingroom-cable ready TV, DVD's, WIFI, AC is available, 2 leather sofas for lounging;
Dining room-4 chairs, placemats, view of garden;
Kitchen-refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, toaster oven, cookware and dinnerware, disinfecting soap and wipes;
Bathroom-hot water in shower only, bath towels;
Also-Tiled balcony w/hammocks, wood deck-pick and enjoy seasonal fruits, outdoor shower, Carport parking, courtyard. Some beach items.

Interaction with Guests

Hands on/ hands off, it's up to you. I want to know when to expect you, give you an orientation to the island and my home, know how to reach you in transit and on island (in case something comes up, i.e. if you miss the ferry or home projects affect power, etc. and when you are planning to leave for key drop off

The Neighborhood

I love the daytime quiet, the Malecon's-far enough away to not hear late night partying but close enough to get there in minutes-beaches, weekend
Artisanos wares and local food kioskos.

Getting around

The Malecon is a quick downhill walk-7-9 mns. You can reserve a Publico or taxi (even when you are on the ferry!) by phone. Publicos cruise the Malecon- wave to the driver to stop-ask price before boarding. Motor bikes and bicycles are available in Esperanza. Motor vehicle rentals (discounts in off -season) need to be reserved in advance during high season or holidays.

Other Things to Note

Come to Vieques For more than The Biobay experience, we has beautiful beaches highly ranked in several travel magazines. Great local events Patronales week of July 13, 2014, Three Kings day and Parade Jan 6, 2015; and The Race For The cure. New to the Eco Sustainable community through Airbnb, we ask you please not use harsh chemical shampoos, conditioners, etc. as the gray waters irrigates the grounds. We are growing and learning to collaborate with others to recycle plastic, paper and glass-ask where to store items if it's not readily available and to compost-for gardening. Please do offer your expertise in any of these areas-and hand at fruit picking-it will be greatly appreciated. All fruit can be eaten fresh or preserved for future guests of The L.O.V.E. Retreat.

  • Dr. Mona and her pack are fantastic hosts! Dr. Mona is extremely friendly, welcoming, and willing to share her life with her guests. She has 5 sweet, loving, loyal dogs who became our instant friends and protectors during our stay. We can't wait to go back and visit them all! Dr. Mona's house is clean, well cared for, and close to the Malecon, which is perfect for guests who do not want to rent a car, but want to be near the great restaurants and beaches of Vieques.

  • My girlfriend and I had a great two night stay at Dr. Mona's home. The room was clean as was the bathroom and outdoor kitchen. She does have a number of dogs but they are well behaved and pretty quiet. We took one of her labs (Midnight) down to the beach and he was a joy to be with. He followed us without a leash and never ran off. The house is perfectly located 10 minutes from the beach and a number of great eateries. Dr. Mona is a very nice person. She gave us a bowl of mangoes from her trees, recommended stores and eateries and was overall a very accommodating hostess. Would love to stay with her again!!!!!!

  • My friend and stayed at Dr Mona's house for two nights. Here are the pros and cons of this place:
    -The location is in Esperanza which is 15 minute walk to Sun Bay (a beautiful beach), and is close to majority of the best restaurants on the island
    -We felt that the neighborhood is pretty safe (even though we had warnings before coming that we should not walk alone). We actually found that local people were very friendly and helpful to us when we asked for directions (One neighbor even gave us mangoes! Aw.)
    -The place was not clean. Dr. Mona has 6 dogs and although we love pets and we didn’t stay home most of the time, we had to jump over dogs to get to our room because there were many of them in a small apartment. The smell and hair of dogs also affected the cleanliness of the room as well. Our host, Dr Mona demanded that we take our shoes off while inside the house which was a little uncomfortable because the floor was dirty and sticky.

    -On our departure from Vieques, we were running to an early morning flight but still wanted to say goodbye to Mona. However, Mona wanted us to take off the bed sheets and leave them on the dry machine outside (We were not informed about this during our stay there). It was just a trivial task, but we found that inconsiderate given we were in a hurry to catch our flight, and that Mona would’ve done it herself like other Airbnb hosts’ usual hospitality.

    We love Vieques island and it was an absolutely fantastic trip, but we would rather stay in a different place where we feel more comfortable.

  • Dr. Mona is a kind host, and her place is in an amazing location, a little walk from the main strip of restaurants, bars, excursion outfits, and Caribbean coast. Dr. Mona is full if information and suggestions about what to do on Vieques.

    If you do stay here you must be OK with dogs and cats and what comes with them. That said, we enjoyed a clean room and bed and shared bathroom in a stellar location.

  • We stayed with Dr. Mona for about a week so we really got to know the L.O.V.E. retreat well. First, the living space: nice big bed, storage for clothes, AC unit, private bathroom with shower, futon for lounging, Direct TV (though we didn't use it because why would you on vacation?), dining table, microwave and toaster oven, refrigerator, who could ask for anything more? THIS IS PERFECT for those who want to save money on long term stays because of the ability to cook your own small and simple meals (Malecon meals DO add up). There was nothing about this room we were disappointed with, and since it is on the second floor you can get a good view of sunsets as well as just hang out on the balcony area having drinks which we did many times. Secondly, Dr. Mona and her home: She is this wonderfully helpful and eccentric woman who accommodated us by providing us information about the area, always checking to see if we needed fresh towels or linens, and she gave us a couple of generous breakfasts (bagels, pineapple boats, garden starfruit). Her pack of dogs are sweet as can be, we even took three of them on a walk on the Malecon one day. Her upstairs cats kept us company on the balcony many nights, also sweethearts. We developed a rapport and helped her out a few times taking her shopping and she helped us out by allowing us to use her kitchen, so there was a nice mutual benefit between us during our stay. She was never intrusive or overbearing as some AirBnB hosts can be. Thirdly, location: While this is not directly on the Malecon, it isn't far at all, and the price is worth it. It is close to 3 stores where you can stock up on all your essentials, and it is about a 10-15 min walk to the awesome Sun Bay beach. If you have a car rental, this distance is insignificant and if you're walking everywhere (which we did 6 of 7 days) it is totally doable. We even made a day trip walking from this location to Navio, Medio Luna beaches, which is more of a hike but still feasible.

    Overall experience is that we were very satisfied with our stay here, the accommodations, the host, the room, and the location. Dr. Mona is a very considerate woman, and she plans on upgrading the upstairs rooms to contain an outdoor kitchen in the future (for those super-savers out there, this is an excellent option). I would definitely come back here!

  • Dr. Mona was a sweet heart! My wife and I stayed there one night and she was very accommodating. What you get is a room with peace of mind. Her dogs were well behaved. The town is about a 15 minute walk. Theres a store two blocks away. Overall it was a nice place to stay at.

  • Wonderful stay! Dr. Mona is extremely helpful. She knows everything in the island. When we went outside at night, she offered us a mosquito coil, which literally saved us from being bite! And her dogs are very friendly. They even went to beach with us!

  • Dr Mona was extremely helpful and helped us find our way around Esperanza and get a tour of the Bio Bay! The room was within walking distance of everything we needed to get to.

  • Staying with Dr Mona was a true local experience! Vieques is a beautiful island and needs at least 2 days to explore. Mona was helpful in showing us where to go and what to do. Esperanza is the main town on the island with lots of restaurants on a strip by the ocean called the Malecon. Mona's house is a 10 minute walk from this strip so it was very convenient! The room we stayed in was recently built and was simple but nice. If visiting Vieques make sure to snorkel under the old pier, and visit Caracas (Red) Beach which is beautiful! Overall a must see if visiting Puerto Rico!

    Response from Dr. Mona:

    Glad you liked the new space, Adding art this week. I covered the fan like you suggested, I think it helped, thanks! Dogs have been officially locked out from upstairs-I was going to check on that phenomenon, they are not used to being at home all day for days, weeks and now months- when I must have awakened you all your last night so didn't want to keep piddling around. Thanks for reminding me, I appreciate it.

I love the playa, sunrise, sunset, mid day swim, late afternoon float-I should be there now, in fact, I could stay there all day! I am a paradox- a Water lover who es [paradoxically] mierdo de aqua! Still learning Viequense Spanish to communicate and study the culture-an anthropologist at heart. My goal: Yo quiero abierto El Colegio de la Gente en Vieques. The L.O.V.E. Movement is focused on rescuing human souls globally. Locally we will start with a hybrid Spanish-English pilot course scheduled through the El Centro de Aprendizaje en Nueva Parcellas Esperanza that starts in Spring 2014-maybe you can be a visiting language partner during your stay at the Retreat. A Hybrid person (ask), I am a widow, who saw my Ti enjoy our home in Vieques in his last twenty-two months, and remain in his beautiful Puerto Rico to fulfill new dreams. My new mantra is "Be Happy Now", dreams of sailing on Catamarans, traveling to South America, South Africa and Australia. I am learning art forms to go with the found art objects I make, love making big leaf plants grow. I want to learn how to cook and to preserve my tropical fruits to bolster my joy. I enjoy a good 'chick'/action flick on Sunday morning. Yes, I am green, in terms of protecting my beautiful fruit trees and devouring them especially avocados. I'm a vegan-vegetarian when necessary- who doesn't cook much so my dogs will be looking for any meat leftovers you have. I have a protective animal family- 4 out of 5 dogs are related. There are 2 outdoor/indoor adult cats and one kitten who is winning my heart and the jealousy of some of the others pets. I like to offer guests as much privacy as possible so let me know flat out if I'm getting too chatty. My hope is that we 'exchange gifts' in this encounter that speak of and share our individual sources of 'happiness'. Disfruta :-)
