The small cottage is comfortable, peaceful, and well-located in the lively and historic suburb of Melville, Johannesburg. It is separate from the main house, which dates from the 1920s, and is on a secure property.
The living area has a queen-sized firm bed, TV with DSTV (satellite television including a selection of international channels), wi-fi, wireless speaker (to connect to your smart phone, tablet or laptop) and underfloor heating. The efficiency kitchen has a microwave, fridge, Nespresso coffee machine, kettle and toaster, and crockery and cutlery are provided. Note, there is no stovetop-oven. The bathroom has a shower (there is no bath), underfloor heating and heated towel rails. Linen, towels, and some toiletries are provided.
We provide a selection of teas of the world, Nespresso pods, a bottle of red and white wine, and a breakfast starter pack: muesli, yoghurt, milk, bread, jam, honey, and seasonal fruit. There's also a selection of South African spirits: from an award-winning whiskey to a small-batch grappa from a boutique distillery. Enjoy responsibly!
The cottage is suitable for a single person or couple. Maximum of two people.
If you don't have any airbnb reviews please tell us a bit about yourself when booking: what you do, what's your reason for visiting Joburg, and the like.
There is off-street parking available, and guests have use of the pool, as well as two mountain bikes; and while Joburg isn't geared up for commuter cycling there's a fair amount of recreational biking in the area.
The property is a mere two blocks from the lively 7th Street with dozens of restaurants, pubs and bars, and boutique shops. So you're close to the action but also sufficiently far away that you'll hear none of it.
The cottage is within walking distance to the University of Johannesburg, SABC, and Johannesburg Country Club, and a short drive to the University of the Witwatersrand, and central Johannesburg. Rosebank is a 10-minute drive and Sandton 20 minutes away.
A car is useful to have in Joburg, but not necessary. Many of our guests get around using a combination of taxis, Uber, the Rea Vaya bus service (which runs from nearby to town), and the Gautrain.
Guests may use the pool and pool deck, as well as the outdoor furniture (table and chairs) outside the cottage. Please respect the residents' privacy in other areas of the property.
If you use the bicycles please ensure you take the combination lock chains with you. The code is in the Cottage Info book.
No smoking allowed indoors. If you smoke please do so outdoors.
No pets allowed. And there are no pets on the property.
Please be reasonably quiet as we live in a residential neighbourhood.
Lost keys and/or gate remote access charge is R200.
There's no need to take out the rubbish, but if you're staying for a longer period and want to clean out the bin, rubbish bags can be placed in the large refuse bin housed at the pedestrian gate entrance.
A wonderful experience all around! The cottage and the grounds are comfortable and immaculate with all necessary amenities. The location also can't be beat - walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants on 7th St. Thank you for a wonderful stay - I will definitely be back!
Grant's cottage was so amazing and accommodating! Everything was top of the (website hidden), snacks, toiletries, etc. the cottage is super safe and cozy. Tons of privacy. And the bed is super comfy. He also let us use their kids to go into town and told us how to get around. Grant also made it really easy to get the keys and waited around for us when our flight was delayed. The cottage was above and beyond my expectations :)
Grant was welcoming and efficient in explaining what the cottage and the area of Melville contained. Actually all the present reviews are spot on...I can't add much. The cottage was comfortable and well appointed. The fridge had milk, yogurt, OJ, beautiful fruits and granola and... This is above and beyond.... Beer, white and red wine and some excellent spirits. We'll definitely be back when in Josi.
We loved Melville, there is a fun progressive vibe on 7th street. Lots of restaurants and bars. We recommend Ants for pizza and La Luna is a must for fine dining. They're is also an excellent used book store with lots of good SA literature. SAB World of Beer was a great hour and a half tour. Thanks Grant! We'll be back for sure...ps the cottage is close to the university.
This place deserves an award from airnbnb! Its a small but well organized little cottage. Fully stocked with local small batch liquors, wines, fruit, milk, juice, mixers, tioletries, umbrellas, bikes with helmets.... just everything. There were also a few guidebooks lying around which helped us here and there. Whenever they or our research wasnt adequate Angus and Grant were more than happy to assist! We felt very safe in the neighborhood and on the property. We made use of their bikes to ride to the botanical garden, but if you do so be warned that the area is pretty hilly and you will be in for a difficult ride. Uberx is the best and cheapest way of getting around. Cheaper than tuk tuks or taxis. The only negative is that because its such a small place it can be hard to lay your stuff out, but dont worry you will be glad you stayed here!
When I decided to return to Johannesburg, I knew there was only one option as to where to stay: Homely Garden Cottage. For starters, Grant and Angus are the most hospitable and accommodating hosts. They go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible; they couldn’t improve on any aspect. The cottage is very warm and inviting, making it hard to leave it for your daily activities, or for your departure from Johannesburg. What made my second stay all the more special was that my elderly mother was with me; she absolutely loved the place, and felt completely safe. When I notified them that I would be traveling with her, they arranged the cottage to accommodate the two of us, providing me with a very comfortable air mattress, as well as ideas that might be to her liking and abilities, due to her mobility issues. Any time I return to Johannesburg, I plan to make this my place to stay.
I had relaxed and comfortable stay. The host (s) were very welcoming and went out of their way to help and provide assistance. I arrived really late in the evening and they offered to pick me from the airport which was such a blessing. The property is cool, clean and comfortable (3c's). Excepting a hot plate, it has every thing one needs for a comfortable stay. The host kept some wine, snacks and other goodies for the guest. The neighbourhood is safe with some amazing restaurants nearby. A sincere thank you to Grant and Angus. Highly Recommended.
Our experience was perfect. These guys went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and easy. The cottage is incredibly homely, in the British but not the North American sense. We wanted to stay longer!
