About This Listing
The small cottage is comfortable, peaceful, and well-located in the lively and historic suburb of Melville, Johannesburg. It is separate from the main house, which dates from the 1920s, and is on a secure property.
The living area has a queen-sized firm bed, TV with DSTV (satellite television including a selection of international channels), wi-fi, wireless speaker (to connect to your smart phone, tablet or laptop) and underfloor heating. The efficiency kitchen has a microwave, fridge, Nespresso coffee machine, kettle and toaster, and crockery and cutlery are provided. Note, there is no stovetop-oven. The bathroom has a shower (there is no bath), underfloor heating and heated towel rails. Linen, towels, and some toiletries are provided.
We provide a selection of teas of the world, Nespresso pods, a bottle of red and white wine, and a breakfast starter pack: muesli, yoghurt, milk, bread, jam, honey, and seasonal fruit. There's also a selection of South African spirits: from an award-winning whiskey to a small-batch grappa from a boutique distillery. Enjoy responsibly!
The cottage is suitable for a single person or couple. Maximum of two people.
If you don't have any airbnb reviews please tell us a bit about yourself when booking: what you do, what's your reason for visiting Joburg, and the like.
There is off-street parking available, and guests have use of the pool, as well as two mountain bikes; and while Joburg isn't geared up for commuter cycling there's a fair amount of recreational biking in the area.
The property is a mere two blocks from the lively 7th Street with dozens of restaurants, pubs and bars, and boutique shops. So you're close to the action but also sufficiently far away that you'll hear none of it.
The cottage is within walking distance to the University of Johannesburg, SABC, and Johannesburg Country Club, and a short drive to the University of the Witwatersrand, and central Johannesburg. Rosebank is a 10-minute drive and Sandton 20 minutes away.
A car is useful to have in Joburg, but not necessary. Many of our guests get around using a combination of taxis, Uber, the Rea Vaya bus service (which runs from nearby to town), and the Gautrain.
Guests may use the pool and pool deck, as well as the outdoor furniture (table and chairs) outside the cottage. Please respect the residents' privacy in other areas of the property.
If you use the bicycles please ensure you take the combination lock chains with you. The code is in the Cottage Info book.
No smoking allowed indoors. If you smoke please do so outdoors.
No pets allowed. And there are no pets on the property.
Please be reasonably quiet as we live in a residential neighbourhood.
Lost keys and/or gate remote access charge is R200.
There's no need to take out the rubbish, but if you're staying for a longer period and want to clean out the bin, rubbish bags can be placed in the large refuse bin housed at the pedestrian gate entrance.
It was a very nice place. I enjoyed my stay there and the host was most accommodating and helpful. I was glad to be able to visit with them to learn more about the neighborhood and residence. It really gave me a nice view of Johannesburg that I wouldn't have gotten had I stayed in a hotel downtown. The host provided excellent notes for nearby food and services. Hope I get a chance to stay with them again in the future.
Grant and Angus were superb hosts. Their cottage is lovely, a cozy home away from home. They thoughtfully supplied us with a delicious basket of fruit, bread for toast, coffee, tea, milk, and gave us excellent local and Joberg information. We could not have asked for more gracious, generous, and considerate airbnb'ers.
Our stay with Grant was fabulous. He was quick to respond to any of our questions, and we were able to check in early on our day of arrival. The self-contained studio is compact, very tastefully done, and it has just about everything a traveller might need and then some. There is secure parking on-site, and the main street is just a 1-2 minute walk away. The outdoor area with pool is perfect for drinks and unwinding. Besides the info book in the cottage, our host was also helpful with any questions about the Melville neighbourhood as well as sight seeing.
Unfortunately, we had to cut our stay short unexpectedly. Even though it was our decision to leave early, Grant was both gracious and generous in refunding our last night and not taking no for an answer.
When we are able to return to Joburg in the future, we will certainly not hesitate to see Grant and stay once again in his "homely garden cottage".
The cottage is wonderful! Two minute walk to tons of restaurants, coffee shops and bars. I use airbnb a lot and had a first by having dinner with Grant and Angus! Really just great hosts through and through.
We couldn't have asked for more from our stay in the cottage. The space is beautifully decorated and we loved having breakfast outside on the patio. Grant and Angus kept the kitchen stocked with breakfast foods and wine and they were happy to offer tips on places to explore in Melville (our favorite: The Leopard for dinner). The location is great for accessing the city and you can catch a beautiful sunrise if you get up early and hike down to the Koppie Nature Reserve.
Grant made us feel instantly welcome. The lovely cottage was perfect for our first stay in Johannesburg. It had just about anything you could think of and we felt right at home. The neighborhood also had a lot to offer with great restaurants and coffee shops. We would definitely stay here again!
