Check out how Potwin became ground zero for the internet!
Potwin, Kansas is a quiet little town about half an hour northwest of Wichita. . Visitors to Potwin andwould never guess at the weird accident of latitude and longitude that made the unsuspecting town the center of a global web of digital suspicion and skullduggery.
One quiet farm becomes a magnet for trouble.
Joyce Taylor, 82, grew up on a 360-acre farm north of Potwin. Beginning in 2011, Taylor began to have a steady stream of odd phone calls and visitors to her property: IRS agents asking for people she'd never heard of, police officers tracking down runaway children, crime victims demanding their stolen goods or accusing her of online scams. All of this Internet-era harassment confused Taylor, who had an old computer but only used it to write Sunday school lessons.
Every mystery computer in the country was pointed to Potwin.
It turned out that a Massachusetts digital mapping company called MaxMind was selling geographical information about IP addresses, those unique four-number labels that identify computers and networks on the Internet. But when MaxMind's software was unable to narrow down an American IP address's physical location, it returned the best answer it could: the latitude and longitude of America's geographic center, which is outside Lebanon, Kansas. But some anonymous MaxMind programmer decided to round off to the nearest whole degree, and made the company's default response 38°N 97°W exactly. Unfortunately, that point wasn't in Lebanon—it was right in front of Joyce Taylor's home. MaxMind was mapping over 600 million different IP addresses onto one little house in Potwin! Every mystery computer in the country was pointed to Potwin.
The new center of the United States will be underwater. The company had no idea this was going on until Hill told them about Joyce Taylor's plight. They've since tweaked their algorithm, so that when they can't produce an precise location for an IP address, their default spot will be a body of water. "Yay!" Taylor told a Wichita Eagle reporter, when told the good news. "I do not know anything about the Internet." And hopefully now, for the first time in years, the Internet knows nothing about her.
