About OP Hale:

A big warm Aloha from Hawaii! Keith, Mary, Bodhi, Cedar, Mango and Mac would like to welcome you to Pu'uanahulu on the Big Island of Hawaii. Upon visiting Hawaii over several years, we fell in love with the islands. In an effort to live a more simple and peaceful life, we moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Big Island 13 years ago. Keith is currently the Chief Science Officer at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) and previously a Naturalist Guide for Hawaii Forest & Trail. Mary is a writer, dancer and meditator who practices gratitude each day. We hope that you will visit us and experience the Big Island - local style.

Guest access

You will have access to a washer and dryer so you can pack light. We have tried to anticipate your needs and provided everything you might need. If it is not in the room, ask us, we most likely own one.

Interaction with guests

Upon arrival, we greet you with an introduction to the Big Island (size of Connecticut, 6 hours to drive all around without stopping). With the map of the Big Island spread out in front of us, we point out all the places you might want to explore, places to eat, and our guests' and our favorite adventures. We live in the main house on the property and are available for any questions you may have. We check in with you as you are coming and going during your stay to see where you have been adventuring. On your last day, we want to hear of your favorite adventures during your stay with us and wish you well on your life journey.

Other things to note

We have two Hungarian Vizslas. They are known for their exuberant greetings and remind us each morning how lucky we are to live another joyous day! They live in the main house. They are not allowed in the guest house. Hawaii Tax ID: W53898073-01

We felt very comfortable in this "treetop" home. It was perfect for "birders" such as ourselves. The first morning of "dawn chorus" was fabulous. Walking the neighborhood was very "birdy" too. Additionally the language lesson was invaluable! Keith did an excellent job teaching us. We recommend Ophale highly.

The two of you are amazing and the best hosts we have ever had the privilege to experience Your authenticity and sincerity speaks from the heart. Your hospitality and the energy of the home you provided gave us courage to continue to pursue our dreams. You are both much wiser than your youthful appearance and you should be afforded the all the rights and privileges of island elders. We learned so much from both of you and we hope to keep you as ohana. We plan to pay forward your kindness. Thank you from our hearts as you were angels sent to help us move into a new chapter of our lives. Love, Beau and Neil

What a find! We wanted for nothing! Mary greeted us upon arrival and immediately enhanced our Hawaiian experience by offering guidebooks, maps, snorkel gear, homemade baked goods and local fruit! More importantly, Mary graciously offered suggestions of hot spots around the island. Her suggestions made our trip complete. We were easily able to travel to black, green, salt/pepper and the absolute softest white sand beaches. We also took her up on her snorkeling recommendations and had a remarkable experience. We instantly saw hundreds of fish and a few dozen sea turtles. Mary and Keith truly provide a beautiful home away from home. Every morning we were greeted with an amazing view of the ocean and the sunrise coming over Mauna Kea. The home is clean, comfortable and well appointed. This location is PERFECT for exploring the the entire west coast. It was exactly how we wanted to start our honeymoon! Mary and Keith were lovely hosts. After hitting a home run on all of their recommendations, we sought them out at the end of our stay for advice and tips for the rest of our Hawaii adventure. They both took the time to answer all of our questions and provided amazing information about the island that we couldn't have received in a timely manner anywhere else. If we are fortunate enough to find ourselves headed back to Kona, we will absolutely attempt to book with them again!

We could not imagine a better place for our stay in Hawaii and beside, it was our best airbnb experience. Place was well equipped with everything necessary: kitchen, bathroom, beach stuff. Mary and Keith are very sweet people. They welcomed us when we got there, gave a GREAT overview of the island and tips. They were also around and available for any additional questions we had during our stay. Now i need to mention the stunning view from the huge balcony. Every morning while eating breakfast we were enjoying a beautiful view of the ocean and Maui island that was visible from there. Location was nice a well. Although it was a bit of a drive to the beach (around 30 minutes), it was a nice, cool and quite area, away from burning beach heat and hassle. If we go to the Big Island again, we will certainly stay with Mary and Keith.

It truly was almost like being in a tree house. It was private, so comfortable, clean, bright, open and did I say-relaxing and comfortable? Mary and Keith were very good at sharing their knowledge of the Island. They were friendly and very helpful without being over bearing. We had a great, relaxing time and enjoyed our stay very much and we hope to return again to Mary and Keith's lovely home.
