About OP Hale:

A big warm Aloha from Hawaii! Keith, Mary, Bodhi, Cedar, Mango and Mac would like to welcome you to Pu'uanahulu on the Big Island of Hawaii. Upon visiting Hawaii over several years, we fell in love with the islands. In an effort to live a more simple and peaceful life, we moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Big Island 13 years ago. Keith is currently the Chief Science Officer at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) and previously a Naturalist Guide for Hawaii Forest & Trail. Mary is a writer, dancer and meditator who practices gratitude each day. We hope that you will visit us and experience the Big Island - local style.

Guest access

You will have access to a washer and dryer so you can pack light. We have tried to anticipate your needs and provided everything you might need. If it is not in the room, ask us, we most likely own one.

Interaction with guests

Upon arrival, we greet you with an introduction to the Big Island (size of Connecticut, 6 hours to drive all around without stopping). With the map of the Big Island spread out in front of us, we point out all the places you might want to explore, places to eat, and our guests' and our favorite adventures. We live in the main house on the property and are available for any questions you may have. We check in with you as you are coming and going during your stay to see where you have been adventuring. On your last day, we want to hear of your favorite adventures during your stay with us and wish you well on your life journey.

The neighborhood

Puu Lani Ranch is an upscale, gated, ranch neighborhood. There are three miles of walking/jogging paths with ocean and mountain views. Spectacular star gazing and cooler evening temperatures for a good night's sleep.
We are centrally located on the west side of the Big Island. You can explore the entire island from here. Kailua Kona, Waimea, and Waikoloa are all 25 minutes away. You can reach Mauna Kea in about 45 minutes, Hilo in an hour, and Volcano National Park in an hour and a half. World renowned beaches such as Hapuna and Kua Bay are about 30 minutes away. What we love most about our neighborhood is perfect weather all year long and the ability to explore the entire Big Island from our home.

Getting around

The Big Island is BIG so in order to explore the island fully, you must rent a car. Your parking spot is in front of the property. Once you book with us, we will send you a map to our place from the airport.

This retreat is a really good place for a stay in Kona and the Big Island. It has all the amenities you would need and also some extras such as a boogie board and snorkling gear. The location is a great one - easy to get around from there. Mary and Keith are the most welcoming and helpful hosts and they go out of their way to make your visit a pleasant one.

We loved the location because we wanted to explore the north side, Volcano National Park in the south and the west side of the Big Island on our second visit here. It was a peaceful setting away from the busyness of the Kona area. The efficiency apartment was very roomy for two, clean and very well equipped, with many extra for your use. The hosts Mary and Keith could not have been more gracious, delightful people to meet. Their knowledge of the island was a huge help for us by sharing suggestion when asked. It exceed our expectations in every way.

Mary and Keith's place was absolutely perfect! We loved how you could sit on the big porch and listen to the birds sing and the wind through the trees. Also, the house was very clean, comfortable furniture, and plenty of extra essentials. Since the house was up in the mountains there was always a nice cool breeze. Overall, it was better than we expected and would definitely go back!!

This is a perfect home base to explore the Big Island! We spent a month here and never tired of coming home to Puu Lani Ranch. A quiet retreat after adventuring and exploring. It is centrally located to Kona, Waimea, the beaches, and Hilo is only an hour drive. The studio is clean, spacious, and comfortable. Mary and Keith are very friendly and welcoming hosts! Their attention to detail was much appreciated, as was their explanation of Big Island sights and must do's. We highly recommend this rental!!

This place is paradise. Centrally located to all parts of the island. Beautiful grounds, serene and quiet. Most important, Mary and Keith are generous hosts and are eager to make you feel at home. Nestled in the hills, the temperatures are cooler than the coastline. In the evenings and mornings, a light jacket might be needed for some guests.
