Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Villanova Uni

House - Shared room · Edgemont Avenue, Ardmore, PA 19003, United States

It's *sooo* cool here. 3rd flr rm, 2 bed +air mattress +couch. Deli & 3 bars 2min walk! Haverford College;7min. Bryn Mawr College;11 min. Villanova University;11min. Center City Philly;10.1miles. Public transit? Lots! & Golf courses galore.

The Space

My lovely, bright double room is on our third floor & here's what I couldn't fit in the title: we're 7 mins (1.8 miles) from Haverford College, 11 mins (3 miles) from Bryn Mawr College & 11 mins (4 miles) from Villanova University. And 10.1 miles from Center City, Philadelphia. Driving's easy. Public Transit is easy too - buses, trains *and* light rail all within a few minutes walk of our house. I can fix you up with a bike - or two - too.

I'm a Brit actor, playwright & producer. I work from home. There's also my wife, our 3 young daughters, 1 small dog, 1 cat & the occasional foreign exchange student... so it's not always tidy but it's clean - well, as clean as I can make it with a horde like that traipsing through :) But the third floor room is far from our madding crowd & you can chill there once you're done admiring our cute girls!

It's a quiet family street. Third floor double room. Two full bathrooms. We're close to shops, buses, trains & light railway. Parking space is available in our driveway & on the street. Carlino's deli is at the end of the street & Carlino's is flat-out fantastic. There are two bars at the end of the street as well. Seriously, it's wonderful here! And we're 5 minutes from gorgeous Haverford College with it's duck pond & beautiful grounds. We love walking around the college, feeding the ducks, chilling on the grass, running, playing. You can join us some time! Be like me & let the children run & play while you sit & watch 'em. Trust me, it's a lot less exhausting...

If you drive, you get to see more of the area, but within walking distance are wonderful golf courses, the tiny town of Narberth, and a brand new YMCA with 3 indoor pools. The Y has childcare if you need a swim or a workout - we're members & we love it.

Yep, you can bring your kids if you don't mind cramming into a double room. There's 2 double beds & a sofa & we've got blow-up mattresses. Hammock anyone?

The town of Ardmore (10 min walk) has bars, restaurants, a cafe that hosts indie bands each week (Melodies Cafe, Ardmore is just one of several cafes). Ardmore has trains & buses to Philadelphia, Washington DC & New York. And Ardmore's First Friday arts & crafts events covers the Main Line communities of Ardmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr. The slogan is "First Friday- A Main Line ARTitude" 'ARTitude' - I like that!

- Wikipedia says -
"Ardmore's part of Philadelphia's Main Line which is an unofficial historical and socio-cultural region of suburban Philadelphia.
Amtrak's Keystone Corridor and SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line service the route from Center City Philadelphia, serving the original Main Line communities and beyond.
With many towns located on steep cliffs along the Schuylkill River, the scenery of rolling hills, open meadows and winding roads add to the aesthetics of the area. The Main Line is known for its old-style homes, relative exclusivity, golf, and shopping. It contains the King of Prussia Mall, the second largest mall in the country."

Guest Access

We have 2 bathrooms. The 2nd floor bathroom has a full bath, with shower, sink etc. The 1st floor bathroom has a shower & sink. The 2nd floor bathroom is used by our 3 little girls. It's clean but... 3 little girls... nuff said?
The living room, dining room & kitchen on the 1st floor are also over-run by family life. There's me & my wife, 3 daughters (4.5, 6.5 & 8.5 yrs) plus a dog & a cat. You're welcome to try & find a place to perch but it's bug-nuts down there. The 3rd floor where the BnB rooms are (email hidden) - trust me, you're safer there! ;)
I can fix you up with a bike - or two - too.

Interaction with Guests

Like I say, I'm a stay-at-home-Dad but I'm also a playwright/actor/director & general theatre-guy here in Philly so sometimes I'm out nights performing or rehearsing - or trying to find a quiet place to write. I'm a late-night animal.
I love chatting with our airBnB folk & our girls & my wife like to meet new people so it's up to you - if you want interaction, there's plenty available. If you want peace, the 3rd floor is the place to be!
Mornings are nuts. Little girls - and their Mama - expand to fill the space+time available so school mornings 7 to 8am are frantic. The downstairs bathroom is a great escape if you need that time-slot!
Evenings 6 thru 8pm - also nuts. Little girls, dinner, bath, homework, tired, cranky; you can imagine. ;)
In sum; you want to interact with cute girls & a friendly family - you got it. You want to chill on the 3rd floor - you got that too.

Getting around

Public Transit is easy - buses, trains *and* light rail all within a 10-15 minute walk of our house. I can fix you up with a bike - or two - too. I cycle everywhere - with the girls too. There's parking on street & in the driveway too.

Other Things to Note

All I can do is repeat what I said in my summary: really, it's *sooo* cool here. A Deli & 3 bars within a 2min walk! All those colleges & all those children you want to visit - Haverford College;7min. Bryn Mawr College;11 min. Villanova University;11min. Center City Philly;10.1miles. Public transit? Lots! *AND* lotsa golf courses. And the Philly's Main Line suburb is full of things historical, artistical & occasionally fantastical.

  • Mark, his wife and their three little girls were all very pleasant and nice to be with. Their home is less than five minutes from Haverford College, which made it convenient to visit our son there. It was generally quiet at night. Mark was very helpful with advice on getting around town and things to see.

But prospective lodgers need to know something that's not in the description: The house is an utter, total mess. Our room was better, though shabby. It was unclear if the bed linens were clean, and my wife and I awoke each morning with aching backs.

I'm a middle class guy from Queens and am not accustomed to luxury, being waited on, catered to nor living in spotless places. I don't make un reasonable demands on anyone. And I know that having three young girls can challenge the best efforts to keep a place clean.

But the girls were not the issue here. It would have taken 300 children a couple of weeks running amok to create the piles of boxes, jars, books, bottles, paper bags and other items scattered throughout. If there'd been the will to tidy things up it could easily have been done. If my home looked like this I'd be too ashamed to invite anyone in, let alone total strangers.

Given this, the room was overpriced. It ought to cost no more than $25 or $30 a day.

  • Very nice place to stay if proximity to Bryn Mawr/Haverford/Ardmore are your destinations. Enjoyed the host, Mark and his three lovely daughters. Room was comfortable/clean and bathroom/kitchen easily accessible.

  • Mark was a very welcoming and considerate host. My room was comfortable, warm, and private. The location could not be better if you are visiting a child or friend at Haverford College, as I was. I am very grateful to Mark and his family for a superbly affordable and comfortable stay in their home. Thank you, Mark!

  • We were happily surprised to arrive and find a houseful of kids and pets, a real family life, and Mark Knight presiding so nurturingly over it all. Our accommodations in this working-class neighborhood and home were the third floor, with the shared bathroom on the second. It gave us plenty of contact with the family but, up on the top floor, a bit of remove from it all, too. Mark's home is cozy and casual -- no fancy anything, just real life in an active home decorated enthusiastically with lots of favorite artwork and clues to Mark's passion for local theater. The house is a stone's throw from Carlino's, an Italian deli voted Best in Philadelphia many times. What a delightful place to grab a bite and a cup of coffee. The hospitality was wonderful and we look forward to returning as our travels call us back.

  • Visiting my daughter at Haverford this fall, this was the second time I've stayed with Mark and his family, and just as before it was a lovely experience. They are simply grand -- and interesting! -- people, and they are completely welcoming. I look forward to visiting them again as my daughter makes her way through her senior year...

  • Mark was a generous and enthusiastic host. He was up to welcome me when I arrived late at night and made sure I had a late night snack by my bedside. In the morning he served me tea, yummy cranberry toast with apple butter. Mark is also a very interesting person to share ideas with.
The room is on the third floor. The pros: the room is large and sunny, the mattress is comfortable. Parents could easily stay with kids in the same room. It is easy to come and go as you please as a key is provided. I never had trouble finding on the street parking. This home is very close to Haverford. Mark also provides a universal charger in the room so any type of phone can be charged, and of course there is the above mentioned hospitality. Guest have access to the kitchen and can leave a thing or two in the fridge. Possible cons that some guest may want to consider: the two flights of stairs are a bit steep and narrow - fine for the able but could be tough for some. There is one bathroom shared by guest and family and it is down one floor making a trip in the middle of the night a bit harrowing. And for those who prefer a "neat as a pin" environment this space is more on the homey, casual side.
In summary: I had a great stay and appreciated Mark's easygoing nature and delicious breakfast (he even does gluten free!).

  • I stayed with Mark and his delightful family while visiting my daughter at Haverford, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Not only was his home convenient to the college, but he could not have been more welcoming and accommodating -- particularly since I was burdened with a broken foot and needed special help moving around. I would stay at Mark's again without hesitation, and would look forward to it!
