Our house is in the Avers Valley in the highest commune in Europe, Avers-Juf. The scenery at any time of year is stunning. We have three ski lifts just a 15 minute walk away and the villages tend to be at their busiest in winter. It is a very family friendly small ski resort. In summer the valley is green, tranquil, and blossoming with a huge variety of wild flowers. We have internet and parking for up to four vehicles. I make all my own bread and cakes and can come to some arrangement if a guest would like full board. There is a bus eight times each day to and from our nearest town and there is a good rail link from there to Zurich and buses to Chur and Bellinzona. We are also happy to offer lifts to and from Chur or Thusis for a small fee.

We have accommodation for up to 9 people in 4 twin rooms. The rooms are spacious, warm and simply furnished. Three of these rooms are situated within their own top floor flat with large living room and large bathroom. Winter and summer the views are incredible for each and every room. We would be delighted to include breakfast and an evening meal if desired and cater for omnivores and vegetarians.

We are a small monastic community of two with a special calling to providing hospitality. We are happy to welcome people of any religion or or none and are also family and animal friendly.

In winter particularly, our busiest time due to ski season, the cancellation policy is strict, as our apartment is likely to be in demand. In February, we offer a room for one or two people in our own apartment at normal airbnb rates. The guest apartment may or may not be available and is usually open to larger groups staying for a week at a time, Saturday to Saturday. Please send me a message for the price and availability.

  • Alistair and his partner were wonderful hosts during our short 1 day stay in Am Bach. Beautifully decorated and well furnished house with breathtaking scenery just right outside the house. If you are looking to experience the nature of Switzerland, this is the place to do so! Thank you Alistair!

  • If you want to get away from city life, the town where St Gall's Alpine Retreat is located is the place to go. The valley is beautifully secluded between the mountains with beautiful views. Very few tourists. The apartment had all we needed (separate bedrooms for children and parents, a nice bath in the bathroom, and an okay sized living room/diningroom/kitchen). I think in the summertime a little outside terrace would be nice, but because we still had some snow and cold temperatures so we didn't miss it. The hosts were very nice and made us feel welcome, and it is lovely that they can provide a simple dinner and/or fresh bread for a nice price after a long trip on the road or fun filled day with three kids. The train around the house was a big hit for the kids. Bruno really loves taking care and creating the tracks and his trains and Allistair finds peace and spiritual happiness through life in the mountains. I loved waking up and opening the windows to view the mountains and breathe the mountain air while still snoozing in my bed. Possible activities: We spent a day discovering the surrounding tiny towns with locals, then we went cross country skiing for a day with our 3 kids along a beautifully prepared path, and we took a day trip on the trains along the Unesco World Heritage tracks getting in and out where we liked which the kids loved as well. Sledding and building snowmans are definitely part of the fun too. We went during the start of spring (Easter break), so a lot of the real winter activities had ended (skiing was still possible though) and there was still too much snow for the summer activities, but nonetheless the couple of days we spent there were really good to "destress" from a hectic life of work and kids.

  • Don't tell to anybody about my secret tipp - Alistairs and Brunos St. Gall Mountain Retreat! You feel really staying in the mountains - very calm, far away from everywhere and glittering snow around you! You can walk by snowboots, countrycross ski, alpin ski, snowboard or slide on the white winterways or on untuched Mountains everywhere, make snow angels or watch millions of sparkling stars at a very black sky at night. You have your own apartement with full equiped kitchen and your own living room. You could also cook at your own, but you would be very silly to do that, because you would miss Alistairs cooking! He is an excellent cook and will coddle you with his home made dishes for a very low price but more even higher quality! Cheese and meet from the farmers near there, home made bread and not to forget the deliscious deserts every day...Bruno has buildet and is still building a big raylway around the house that is an attraction for families, kids and passing persons. Bruno and Alistair are very lovely and open persons and I am happy to have met them. I shurely will come back to this place! Thank you so much Alistair and Bruno!

  • It was a very nice stay. We were 10 young friends that stayed at Alistair's. We loved our stay and the hosts very friendly and comfortable to stay with. The location is beautiful and we were the only ones on the slopes! The house is easy to access by car and the skilifts are in walking distance. I wish Alistair and Bruno all the best and a beautiful time in this wonderful place. Thank you.

Thank you Lawrence. We hope you'll come again!

  • Thank you Alistair and Bruno for hosting us for a couple nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The guest apartment was very comfortable and spacious and Alistair prepared a nice breakfast. We were lucky, getting two sunny days to enjoy some snowshoeing. Hopefully someday we can get back in the summer to explore the endless hiking options in the valley and side valleys. Thank you Bruno for showing up the model railway in action and good luck with further expansion of it. Thanks again for having us and we recommend others go enjoy this beautiful relaxing place.

    Response from Alistair:

Thank you Llewellyn. It was a joy to have you both with us and we look forward to your next visit!

  • My friend and I stayed at Alistair's place for 2 nights. It was a very pleasant stay. Alistair seemed very kind and helpful. He also made some recommendations as to where to hike around there (even though we didn't exactly go by his recommendation in the end!).
All in all, it was a lovely experience, The mountains are majestic and the village has a solitude unlike anything possible in a city.
All the best to you and Bruno, Alistair.

  • The floor that we could use had everything to make a stay, after having walked in the mountains, very pleasant: the cozy complete kitchen/room, the bedrooms with good beds and the huge bathroom with bath were exellent. Being without car, it is necessary to think of the shopping which you can do by bus or walking, but that takes some time. Or take food with you from Andeer. By car is more comfortable, but no must. Sure we would like to come back and show it to other people. We were very much surprised by the beautiful chapel, the icoons of the saints and the nice chanting we heard of Alistair and Bruno, a real satvic place, we felt honoured!!
There is so much to see in the valley, so many walks to the different sidevaleys and that the bus rides 7x a day is nice! High in the mountains is a wonderful world, full of colored stones and rocks. The Lei lake, a marvelous walk through the woods from Crot and the walk from Cresta over the wooden bridge near the deep river to Crot, the walks to Bivio, to much to all tell. There is lots of information in the house.
We liked very much the beautifully built railway in front of the house, we liked everything and everybody, Alistair, Bruno, the bussdrivers, the farmers, the pigs in front, which welcomed us, the cows, which shared their meadows with us, the beautiful plants, the blackberries which colored red...ect. Thanks to you all in the Aversvalley! It was a most beautiful holiday!

  • We were so looking forward to staying with Alistair and Bruno having read the other comments online. We were not disappointed. Such friendly and accommodating gentlemen in the most charming setting of a most beautiful country. We hiked, played in snow, spotted wildlife and enjoyed the break from busy cities. Bring your appetite as the meals are superb and bountiful. Take a picnic made from Alistair's freshly baked bread! Make sure you have plenty of food if supplying your own as in summer the villages are mostly shut and resting. We recommend this as a place for enthusiastic walkers.

My partner and I run a small guesthouse where we welcome people for both holidays and retreats. I am Irish and Bruno is (Italian) Swiss. We manage to communicate in a number of languages. We enjoy offering hospitality and introducing this lovely valley to our guests and most guests usually appreciate the tranquil space we provide though we are also happy to entertain families and more energetic tourists. http://(email hidden)/guest-(email hidden)ml
