Welcome to the Boathouse!
The Boathouse is perfect for a romantic weekend. It has been converted into spectacular yet affordable accommodation, with heaps of character and two large rooms. There is a comfortable sitting room with kitchenette complete with oven, hot plates, sink and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a couch that can be used as a single bed. The boating decor, complete with antique boating accessories, painted waves & clouds, high ceiling, Stable doors and Cedar finishes creates a unique ambience!
The next door bedroom is lined with sweet smelling Japanese Cedar and has charming decor including model boats, bronze propellor, old travel trunks and rustic wall mounted textile. The Queen bed has a spectacular and high level view straight down the river through the shell of the old Slipway. Enjoy the ducks in the water below or dancing fantails and the occassional swinging possum in the rafters of the old slipway, just outside the large viewing window.
There are two private decks with garden and river views. A short walk away (less than a minute) is the central facilities block with showers and toilets.

Interaction with Guests
Some guests like privacy, while others like interaction and guidance on local attractions and events. We are happy to help when asked.
The creative tropical gardens and park like grounds go down to the edge of the river. We are surrounded by horses and luxury properties on one side and a river and famous, historic reserve and on the other side. The river flows down the entire length of our property and meets the KeriKeri Sea Inlet . A walking track leads to two waterfalls (considered the best walk in the area) & starts at our Lodge.
Great kayaking on the river and we have a private jetty.
It only takes 20 minutes to walk to town through the woods, and there are good local taxis and inter-city or major town bus services.
Other Things to Note
The P(website hidden) Lodge Estate comprises 2 acres of gardens and mature trees. There are creative, multi-tiered grounds offering many private and tranquil spaces. There is a gentle flowing river and wide views to the Inlet and adjacent, large Historic Pa Site. As such, we have plentiful and varied bird-life. Please respect our wildlife and do not feed the ducks.
The river is a fish reserve, so no fishing allowed. No children in the old boat shed (lower level) and no swimming without supervision of parents.
1. No smoking inside
2. Please wash, dry and put away all plates and kitchenware after each meal
3. As we are subtropical, please put all sweet things in the fridge and clean surfaces well after food or drink to avoid unwanted insects.
4. Please dispose of sanitary items in bins provided in the central facilities block (not in the toilet)
5. Please take trash and recycle items to the disposal area (back of central block) to avoid ants etc. as we have a subtropical climate
6. Please supervise children if swimming or kayaking in the river
7. Only drink from the filter tap in the central kitchen
The Boat house has its own kitchen, and crockery, cookware and cutlery. If you borrow any extra items from the large Central Kitchen in the nearby amenities block, kindly return them to where you found them. Similarly please don't leave any Boathouse items in the central kitchen.
Great place - wonderful location - a pity the Internet did not work - or almost did not work for me a big issue but if you don't need Internet than a magical place to visit
Pagoda lodge is an amazing place to stay. The accommodations are unique and the landscape is exceptional. Stephen was very accommodating and communication was great. The people who work at pagoda lodge are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend staying here.
Staying in the boathouse was a marvelous experience. It is lovely and whimsical, and the views from the deck and the bedroom are wonderful. The well-kept bathrooms are just a few steps away, and a short walk will get you into town. Stephen was extremely gracious and hospitable and I hoe to stay at the boathouse again someday. It is an experience not to be missed.
Had a wonderful, restful stay in the boathouse. We slept really well it is so quiet and peaceful. The first night on Stephens advice we walked on a beautiful path across a river to a restaurant where we had a fantastic meal.
The only downside was the long walk to the toilet in the middle of the night but I guess that wouldn't be required for everyone and it was worth it anyway!
the boathouse is a really lovely and unique way to spend a night travelling in NZL!
stephen has put a lot of effort in creating an exceptional accomodation. waking up with great view on the river gives you a great start into the day!
being a bit spoiled we still cannot give the highest possible ranking due to the fact that the toilets and the shared bathroom are not directly at the boathouse but in another building approx. a minute away. furthermore there are lots of small scratches in the walls which leads to lots of insects being in the room once the light is switched on.
all in all still our first choice to sleep if we should ever come to kerikeri again!
Thank you for your helpful comments and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Just a comment for other guests reading this:
The Boat house is too close to the water to be allowed showers/ toilets by the local Council but we have good shared facilities block (with showers, toilets and laundry) less than a minute's walk away.
Being sub tropical and right on the water, the Boathouse has its share of insects, which can enter when doors and windows are left open. There is a netting on two vents and one window to prevent this.

About the Host, Stephen
The owners, Kathy and Stephen Frewen, spent more than 20 years in Asia and were immediately drawn to the harmonious balance of “earth, wind and water”. The pagoda roofs, the variety of rare and mature trees, the tranquil river and the abundant bird life all create a certain magic, now enhanced by the serene Buddhas from Borobudur.
