The Historic Lodge, Boatshed , Cottage & unique “Glamping” units - Gypsy Caravans, Safari tents, Treehouse & Wheel House are in 2 acres of creative, tropical, water-front gardens, rich in bird life - Enjoy nature on the river, in stylish comfort!
If you are on a tight budget, but still want to experience something rather special and romantic, then come and stay in The Wheel House for only $80 per night. This is a renovated Boat Cabin from an historic steam boat, The Minerva, finished with sweet smelling Japanese Cedar and French doors.
- a double bed
- tea / coffee facilities
- romantic furnishings.
All other ammenities (showers, toilets and a well equipped kitchen) are a short walk away.
The view includes subtropical gardens, a large Phoenix palm and a tranquil, life sized Buddha
Next door are famous heritage sites: The Maori Chief, Hongi Hika's Pa site, Rewa's Village and the Stone Store river basin with New Zealand's oldest settler buildings.
There are lovely walks to two waterfalls, swimming from our own jetty, kayaking on the river and biking trails.
Our concept is to provide "a magical, integrated experience with nature at our special river front property yet with all possible comforts and a certain style".
We are looking forward to welcome you in the near future!
Large, central water view deck complete with marquee and with café style seating for large groups, BBQ and Gazebo. We have our own Jetty and pontoon, ideal for swimming and Kayaks for hire.
Only the lower Boat shed is off-limits to children.
The creative tropical gardens and park like grounds go down to the edge of the river. We are surrounded by horses and luxury properties on one side and a river and famous, historic reserve and on the other side. The river flows down the entire length of our property and meets the KeriKeri Sea Inlet . A walking track leads to two waterfalls (considered the best walk in the area) & starts at our Lodge.
Great kayaking on the river and we have a private jetty.
It only takes 20 minutes to walk to town through the woods, and there are good local taxis and inter-city or major town bus services.
Other Things to Note
The P(website hidden) Lodge Estate comprises 2 acres of gardens and mature trees. There are creative, multi-tiered grounds offering many private and tranquil spaces. There is a gentle flowing river and wide views to the Inlet and adjacent, large Historic Pa Site. As such, we have plentiful and varied bird-life. Please respect our wildlife and do not feed the ducks.
The river is a fish reserve, so no fishing allowed. No children in the old boat shed (lower level) and no swimming without supervision of parents.
1. No smoking inside
2. Please wash, dry and put away all plates and kitchenware after each meal
3. As we are subtropical, please put all sweet things in the fridge and clean surfaces well after food or drink to avoid unwanted insects.
4. Please dispose of sanitary items in bins provided in the central facilities block (not in the toilet)
5. Please take trash and recycle items to the disposal area (back of central block) to avoid ants etc. as we have a subtropical climate
6. Please supervise children if swimming or kayaking in the river
7. Only drink from the filter tap in the central kitchen
Lovely quirky little place, made the long drive worth while. Highly recommend
I could not recommend this place more. Wheel house is a renovated boat cabin with beautiful décor inside and many small details that made us feel pampered (bottle of water in the fridge, mosquito repellent on the shelf, different kinds of tea and coffee in a tin...). You really are getting the best of two worlds – you have a great comfort while enjoying the nature (there was a kingfisher flying over our heads while we sipped tea on our deck). Overall atmosphere on the site was very calm and zen (there was even a koi pond with Buddha statue!). I think it makes for great spot for romantic getaway. We are definitely coming back! Kathy and Stephen, thank you!
Stephen had great communication from booking to checking in. He was very welcoming and hospitable. Made us feel at ease and gave us a very thorough run down on how the lodge operated plus good tips as to what is available to see and do in the area.
The accommodation itself was stunning; you can't help but instantly feel relaxed at this place. It was a shame we were unable to stay for longer but I will hopefully be back again as this accommodation was very unique for a very affordable price.
We had a great time! We will be back for sure. Beautiful grounds and cozy tent. Thanks very much Steven.
the pagoda lodge was like heaven in kerikeri! stephen upgraded us to the safari tent overlooking the river & greens, the most lovely christmas gift ever. will definitely stay again when my parents visit :)

The owners, Kathy and Stephen Frewen, spent more than 20 years in Asia and were immediately drawn to the harmonious balance of “earth, wind and water”. The pagoda roofs, the variety of rare and mature trees, the tranquil river and the abundant bird life all create a certain magic, now enhanced by the serene Buddhas from Borobudur.
