While visiting you can, if you like, descend from the respite of third floor Eco Guest House to enjoy the bustle of children and youth as they learn in world-class facilities.

There are various activities available at the Eco Guest House@San Martín. For a modest charge, you can:

1. Take a Guided Tour to Laguna Chicabal, the top-rated attracting in the region;
2. Take a Guided Tour to a Local Traditional Market;
3. Enjoy warm hot chocolate (or the beverage of your choice) with s’mores at an Evening Campfire:
4. Take an introductory class in the ancient art form of Mayan Backstrap Weaving, and keep the loom!
5. Learn a Mayan Recipe during a Cooking Class that includes your meal;
6. Learn Spanish from a certified professional in one-on-one classes, or practice with a Practice Partner
7. Visit a local home and learn about Mám Maya culture while you learn to make tortillas!
8. Experience an authentic Mayan Day-Keeping Ceremony, while learning the significance of your birth day and year based on this ancient traditional cosmology (5-person minimum)

If you are interested in any of these add-on activities, please give us as much notice as possible so we may arrange them for you. For your convenience, purchases from our Fair Trade Weaving Cooperative, and any other additional charges incurred during your stay can simply be added to your room charge payable by credit card.

Other things to note
It uses solar energy to power the building, has its own rainwater collection system to limit impact to the local community water system, and a bio-digester to process all waste and protect local rivers and streams.

It was completed and opened in November of 2021.

Proceeds from the Eco Guest House support Local Hope´s important work which sends children to school, keeps families healthy, and prepares youth to find meaningful work and prosper at home in Guatemala.

Where you’ll be

San Martín Chili Verde, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

The quiet, agricultural village of San Martín Chiquito is located at 8,000 feet in the misty mountain region known as "El Area Mam" honoring the local culture and language. Conveniently situated on a main road leading to the Sacred Lake Chicabal Ecological Preserve, the Tripadvisor Top-Rated activity in the region, a fair-trade weaving cooperative is located on site.

There are plenty of local shops, an interesting local outdoor market, and various historical churches in the area. A walk through the village will reveal farmers tending their fields, women in traditional wear tending to the chores of daily living including the processing of corn for cooking; and plenty of children on their way to or from school, or helping with chores.

About Your Manager and Hosts: Ivan, Mel and Leslie Mel and Leslie fell in love on a service trip to San Martín Chiquito, a village nestled in the misty mountains of the Guatemalan highlands. The two were married in 2009. "San Martín holds so many memories for us. We at Local Hope (read on) love the people and the place, and wanted others to be able to experience this exceptional community in the intimate way that we do. We wanted the Guest House to be our home away from home, and yours too. "We know that our Manager, Ivan Maldonado, who has more than 25 years of experience in guest relations, will create a special experience for you at our Eco Guest House! He will work with you on our behalf both to arrange for your stay, and will coordinate with the dedicated local staff for any needs you may have while you are a guest.”
