The Historic Lodge, Boatshed , Cottage & unique “Glamping” units - Gypsy Caravans, Safari tents, Treehouse & Boatcabin are set in 2 acres of creative, tropical, water-front gardens, rich in bird life - Enjoy nature on the river, in stylish comfort!
The gypsy caravans appeal to those looking for an affordable romantic weekend.
They have special interiors with coloured glass windows, plush textiles, lace and unexpected romantic touches. All the caravans have breathtaking water views, courtyards and screened planting that offers privacy.
Two of the Gypsy Caravans have outdoor cast iron baths, under the stars with great water views, privacy screens and herbal/ lavender bath salts. These Caravans with outdoor baths cost an extra $20 per night.
The gypsy caravan down by the river bank not only has an outside bath but also has its own, very private deck that sits out over a “playful” section of the river.
As the gypsy caravans are lined and come with small oil heaters, they are ideal for an autumn or winter getaway.
There are basic utilities - kettle, tea & coffee, fridge & outside wash stand with basin. All other ammenities are nearby.

Interaction with Guests
Some guests like privacy, while others like interaction and guidance on local attractions and events. We are happy to help when asked.
The creative tropical gardens and park like grounds go down to the edge of the river. We are surrounded by horses and luxury properties on one side and a river and famous, historic reserve and on the other side. The river flows down the entire length of our property and meets the KeriKeri Sea Inlet . A walking track leads to two waterfalls (considered the best walk in the area) & starts at our Lodge.
Great kayaking on the river and we have a private jetty.
It only takes 20 minutes to walk to town through the woods, and there are good local taxis and inter-city or major town bus services.
Other Things to Note
The P(website hidden) Lodge Estate comprises 2 acres of gardens and mature trees. There are creative, multi-tiered grounds offering many private and tranquil spaces. There is a gentle flowing river and wide views to the Inlet and adjacent, large Historic Pa Site. As such, we have plentiful and varied bird-life. Please respect our wildlife and do not feed the ducks.
The river is a fish reserve, so no fishing allowed. No children in the old boat shed (lower level) and no swimming without supervision of parents.
1. No smoking inside
2. Please wash, dry and put away all plates and kitchenware after each meal
3. As we are subtropical, please put all sweet things in the fridge and clean surfaces well after food or drink to avoid unwanted insects.
4. Please dispose of sanitary items in bins provided in the central facilities block (not in the toilet)
5. Please take trash and recycle items to the disposal area (back of central block) to avoid ants etc. as we have a subtropical climate
6. Please supervise children if swimming or kayaking in the river
7. Only drink from the filter tap in the central kitchen
I can certainly recommend staying with Stephen and Mary at the Pagoda Lodge. It is a beautiful setting, and there is great attention to detail with the accomodations. We stayed in the gypsy caravan with the deck on the river and enjoyed our breakfasts overlooking the river each morning. We also enjoyed sitting in the outdoor bathtub relaxing in the lavendar bath salts homemade by Mary, looking up at the stars. Both Steve and Mary were there to help with any questions and to make our stay as comfortable as possible. If you are looking for a unique place to stay, close to town, but in a quiet setting, then this is it.
We really enjoyed staying here, very peaceful and relaxing. The outdoor bath at the gypsy caravan was amazing, thank you so much for sorting this out for us Stephen. We did a lovely walk to Rainbow Waterfall which you can go behind the waterfall - very spectacular!
Good amenities and comfy beds, highly recommend! A+++
Gypsy caravan was very authentic, the outside bath was very nice.lovely setting the outside decking by the river was lovely. Bring mossie spray always loads by the river.
We had a wonderful stay in the gypsy caravan. We even prolonged our stay and think that Stephen was very helpful and forthcoming. Be aware that there are many other options to book at Pagoda Lodge ;)

My husband and I were so lucky to have been able to spend 2 amazing nights of our honeymoon in this unique and special location. Stephen and his wife were more than accommodating and were all smiles. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them for an unforgettable experience! Our gypsy caravan was right next to the river with our own private outdoor bathtub and dock to sit on. We couldn't have asked for more. We will be back again someday when we do a return trip to NZ! :) Thank you so much Stephen!
An incredible place! The caravan is immaculate, sweetly decorated, nestled in a bend of a breathtakingly beautiful river. For an easy relaxing retreat, this caravan experience is better than perfect. In a fantastic part of New Zealand, you have easy access to all kinds of sights and activities. Stephen and Kathy are great hosts, with local advice. Almost immediately I arrived, I started planning my next trip back. This is a place that is easy to adore.

The owners, Kathy and Stephen Frewen, spent more than 20 years in Asia and were immediately drawn to the harmonious balance of “earth, wind and water”. The pagoda roofs, the variety of rare and mature trees, the tranquil river and the abundant bird life all create a certain magic, now enhanced by the serene Buddhas from Borobudur.
