About this listing
We offer 2 rooms in the main house, each with a separate entrance, private bath, queen size bed, a small refrigerator and coffeemaker. These rooms open to a large veranda with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, Arenal volcano and our swimming pool.
•Nepenthe Bed and Breakfast is Beautiful piece of paradise located in the little town of El Castillo of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. We are 35 minutes traveling west from La Fortuna downtown. Surrounded by the magical rain forest and exotic wild life (like howler monkeys and toucans) you can appreciate the magnificent Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake, enjoy beautiful sunsets from our infinity edge pool or relax in the Jacuzzi or with a Massage in The Blue Lagoon Spa.
** An advice: because of our location a bit remote up in the hills, renting a car is recommended (a 4WD will be better) as activities and scenic attractions are spread out. This is cheaper in comparison with pay taxi to go to restaurants, attractions or transport from the airport.
** Tres Cabras Restaurant at Nepenthe is located on the grounds of Nepenthe and serve a daily prix fixe dinner menu with handmade food and fresh local ingredients.
• Spring feed swimming pool
• Blue Lagoon Spa
• Tres Cabras Restaurant

Everything about our stay at Nepenthe was amazing!!! It is paradise. Augustin helped arrange a massage for me at the spa and zip lining for my husband and I. Chef Benedict is one of the coolest people I have ever met and his meals were incredible!
Well, if there is anything close to being in heaven on earth.... This is the place. Words and pictures do disservice to this place.
We spent two nights in Nepenthe and had absolutely the best time. We meet the lovely owner who was happy to share his story on finding and developing the place, we meet other guests who were friendly and helpful, we ate well, had a great massage and spent time by the pool.
Nepenthe provided everything we could have hoped for, and then some. Everyone we encountered was warm and extremely helpful; Agustin can help you plan any type of adventurous activities you'd like to partake in, all of which are within a 30 minute drive. WiFi connection in and around the room was great. The views of Lake Arenal and the volcano were stunning, and we saw more than our fair share of monkeys, birds, and geckos. The breakfast was delicious and filling every morning. Additionally, chef Benedict's restaurant just steps down the hill was the perfect place for dinner. Overall, our experience was exceptional. Of note, heed the advice of renting a 4x4 vehicle, as the drive up to Nepenthe is on an unpaved, steep hill. Adobe will provide discounts if you mention you're staying with Nepenthe.
This is a stunning property.
A bit of an off road drive so make sure you have a 4x4. But the view is worth it. Unreal!
Pool over looking the lake, hot tub, steakhouse and spa all on the property.
Very professonally managed and we're very responsive to inquiries.
Steak house was a great dinner.
Overall an experiance my girlfriend and I will always remember.
Nepenthe was a delight! The views were amazing, and the hospitality was great. We stayed for three nights and had the opportunity to explore El Castillo, La Fortuna and other nearby towns. The staff was fantastic at arranging activities, recommending nearby attractions, and providing directions. The highlight of the entire trip was eating dinner with Chef Benedict. Let him cook whatever he wants...it was truly a meal we will talk about for the rest of our lives!
As others mentioned, make sure you have a 4x4. The incoming road is bumpy, but the last half mile is where it really comes in handy!
Stay here, and I promise you won't regret it!!
We really enjoyed staying in the main house. Daily breakfast was delicious and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The pictures don't do the amazing view justice.
Agustin was helpful during our stay and helped us book our ziplining adventure. Gordon, the owner, was also very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with him over coffee and drinks.
The restaurant has a new chef, Benedict, who is very talented and passionate about food. Everything was delicious (some of the best food we had in Costa Rica), but keep in mind the menu is verbal only with no prices listed, so plan on paying more than the old restaurant's prices.
Also, don't underestimate the bumpiness of the road to get to Nepenthe/El Castillo - lots of potholes, bring a 4x4. One other thing to note is once the sun goes down, it's undesirable to venture along the road to get to the town so the nights can be somewhat uneventful.
Overall, we definitely recommend staying here. Lots to do and see.
