• Nepenthe Bed and Breakfast is Beautiful piece of paradise located in the little town of El Castillo of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. We are 35 minutes traveling west from La Fortuna downtown. Surrounded by the magical rain forest and exotic wild life (like howler monkeys and toucans) you can appreciate the magnificent Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake, enjoy beautiful sunsets from our infinity edge pool or relax in the Jacuzzi or with a Massage in The Blue Lagoon Spa.
We offer three rooms in the main house, each with a separate entrance, bath and a queen size bed and a small refrigerator. These rooms open to a large veranda with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, Arenal volcano and our swimming pool.
We also have four cabinas located on the level below the main house and pool. The cabinas each accommodate four persons with a queen size bed and a futon that opens to a double bed. The cabinas have private baths, kitchenettes and private patios with hammocks, lounge and rocking chairs. All have beautiful, private views and are a few steps from the pool and the main house.
** An advice: because of our location a bit remote up in the hills, renting a car is recommended (a 4WD will be better) as activities and scenic attractions are spread out. This is cheaper in comparison with pay taxi to go to restaurants, attractions or transport from the airport.
** Now offering dinners in place at Tres Cabras Restaurant!!!

Had a great stay at Nepenthe b&b, room was big enough for the 4 of us and we had a lovely patio with stunning views across the lake.
Ate at the restaurant the first night and the food was really tasty and a great deal too.
Breakfast was also really nice and filled us up for the day.
Would highly recommend Nepenthe B&B to anyone that wants to stay in the area.
The place is clean, well located and nice. The view is beautifull. The host is absolutly kind and gave us a lot of good advises. The restaurant is really good. I defenetly recommand this place!
This is an amazing place! I had stayed only one night and I drove for 6 hours to get there. It was worth it!! The view is breathtaking! Augustin is a lovely guy. I felt very welcomed there. I hope one day I come back!
Nepenthe is a little far from the main road to La Fortuna, and you'll have to be prepared for some rocky gravel roads. However, the views of Lake Arenal (and the volcano when it's a clear day) from Nepenthe are worth it alone. Also, Ryan and Rebecca, who run the restaurant Tres Cabras, soon to be a separate extension just at the foot of Nepenthe, made our stay heartwarming. They offer an incredible Table D'hote with wine included and they will quickly become good friends. We sat at the bar drinking wine and talking with Rebecca while she cooked one night; another night a bunch of us played music till late after dinner was finished. It was like being at a friend's dinner party every night. Lots of interesting owners from the area pop in, too. Our stay at Nepenthe was the highlight of La Fortuna! And don't forget to get a massage with the hot rocks!
Nepenthe is a little piece of heaven. The entire staff is lovely and makes you feel so welcome. The views are breathtaking and the food is delicious! I highly recommend staying at Nepenthe and getting a massage as well!
We spent a wonderful night here, super kind hosts, Augustine, Rebecca and Ryan, treated us with delicious dinner, wine and company. The rooms are very comfortable, nicely designed. The view from the room and the pool is beautiful.
Nepenthe was the 1st place we stayed on our 1st trip to Costa Rica and Agustin and the entire team did a fabulous job making us feel welcome and at home. The views of the volcano and lake were spectacular, and the peaceful perch made it very hard to leave. We stayed in the main house which was very quiet and close to the many lounging spots by the pool. It was an extra treat to spend some time getting to know the owner and the couple opening a restaurant on the property very soon.
Agustin's directions were perfect, and while it is a bit off the beaten track, it was well worth it and easily accessible in our 4x4.
Thank you Nepenthe, we look forward to seeing you again!
Nice place to stay in the region.
Beautiful view and verygood breakfast.
This is a gem in the Arenal area. The view of Lake Arenal and Mt. Arenal are amazing from the infinity pool and main lodge porch. We had the treat of enjoying the entire main lodge all by ourselves! The village of El Castillo is less touristy than La Fortuna and Nepenthe is well off of the beaten trail so this stay was a refreshing change from other Costa Rica areas. The "attractions" of La Fortuna are 30+ minutes away making it very accessible yet separate. The breakfast was filling and delicious. Agustin is a wonderful person and made our stay feel very warm.
We had a 4x4 for traveling around Lake Arenal and were thankful for having this for the road up to Nepenthe. It might be accessible by a non 4x4, but would recommend verifying this with Agustin. The entrance was challenging to find at night because the entrance was not obvious. There is a concrete Nepenthe sign at the entrance on the left side of the road from La Fortuna immediately before a bridge.
We really enjoyed our stay at Nepenthe. The views were amazing from up there! Perfect view of the volcano and lake. It's a bit away from the town of La Fortuna, and along bumpy roads but if you have a 4WD and you take it slow it's no problem at all, even in the dark. To La Fortuna is about 30-35 minutes where they have some really nice hot springs (we went to Baldi) and restaurants. We also booked massages at the BnB (they have a spa area with a jacuzzi) and they were fantastic! Agustin was a great host. Always available and nice guy to talk to. Upon request, he booked all our activities (ziplining, hot springs, dinner reservations) which made things so much easier. The room was simple, but very clean and bug free. And the breakfast was FANTASTIC!!! Super delicious pancakes one day, and eggs the next, served with great coffee and OJ. The family that runs the place there are super nice and friendly. They make you feel at home. We would definitely stay here again and we highly recommend it!!
