Nepenthe B&B... Unique views!!

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Millon - El Castillo, El Castillo, Alajuela, Costa Rica

The Space

• Nepenthe Bed and Breakfast is Beautiful piece of paradise located in the little town of El Castillo of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. We are 35 minutes traveling west from La Fortuna downtown. Surrounded by the magical rain forest and exotic wild life (like howler monkeys and toucans) you can appreciate the magnificent Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake, enjoy beautiful sunsets from our infinity edge pool or relax in the Jacuzzi or with a Massage in The Blue Lagoon Spa.

We offer three rooms in the main house, each with a separate entrance, bath and a queen size bed and a small refrigerator. These rooms open to a large veranda with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, Arenal volcano and our swimming pool.

We also have four cabinas located on the level below the main house and pool. The cabinas each accommodate four persons with a queen size bed and a futon that opens to a double bed. The cabinas have private baths, kitchenettes and private patios with hammocks, lounge and rocking chairs. All have beautiful, private views and are a few steps from the pool and the main house.

** An advice: because of our location a bit remote up in the hills, renting a car is recommended (a 4WD will be better) as activities and scenic attractions are spread out. This is cheaper in comparison with pay taxi to go to restaurants, attractions or transport from the airport.

** Now offering dinners in place at Tres Cabras Restaurant!!!

  • I had a great stay at Nepenthe B&B. I don't think the pictures of this place reflect the actual beauty of this place. Overlooking Arenal Lake, and the Volcano, late at night you can see the Volcano Peak at a hot pink, just gorgeous. The rooms were nothing special. Decent size beds that accommodated my group of 5. Although there is no AC, you won't need it since the area is relatively cool. The rooms had all the essentials and was very clean. In regards about the breakfast and dinner, I did love how every morning, the menu was different. The complimentary breakfast was usually eggs or pancakes with tasty fresh fruit. Eating outdoors and over looking the view every morning made me want to stay there longer. (even saw a toucan while eating). Every night they serve a lovely home made dinner. First night i had a classic Costa Rican dinner while the second night it was homemade pasta. It was intimate, lovely, welcoming, and made our stay that much better. I definitely recommend having dinner there. And you may be eating there anyways since the downside of the bnb is the location. It is a little difficult to find and the unpaved roads leading to Nepenthe was a massage i didnt ask for. If you are driving to this BNB, i recommend knowing your sunset times and try to find this place with daylight as the signs at night were very difficult to see. As much as it was a struggle to get to this BNB, it was worth it. Don't forget the infinity pool, taking a dip in the water overlooking the sunset, it was one of my memorable nights in Costa Rica. I highly recommend this place. Thank you to everyone at Nepenthe and Agustin for being so helpful accommodating us.

  • The nicest place I stayed in CR. Cabins are quite spacious and clean, mine had a hammock and rocking chair on the terrace so could spend even more time enjoying superb view on the lake.
    Great breakfasts!
I also recommend to go for dinner that is prepared by Rebecca - you will not regret it. :)

  • Had a great stay at Nepenthe b&b, room was big enough for the 4 of us and we had a lovely patio with stunning views across the lake.
Ate at the restaurant the first night and the food was really tasty and a great deal too.
Breakfast was also really nice and filled us up for the day.
Would highly recommend Nepenthe B&B to anyone that wants to stay in the area.

  • Nepenthe was beautiful, but unfortunately, we didn't complete our stay there. The B&B is located about 20-30 minutes up a hill on an unpaved road. You will need a 4x4 to complete this drive. While it's fairly close to Sky Tram, the Hanging Bridges, and the entrance to Arenal park, it was too far away from La Fortuna for us. We had an action-packed itinerary, including a night at Tabacon Hot Springs and a day of whitewater rafting, and we were worried about driving up that hill at night. However, if you would like a more relaxed stay and are doing things on the western side of Arenal, this is a great place to stay. We just knew that we weren't even going to have the time to enjoy the views, but wish we did! Augustin was very communicative and understanding. Highly recommended if you have some time to relax in the area.

  • We had a pleasant 3 night stay at Nepenthe. The property is absolutely gorgeous, located on a hilltop with stunning views of the lake and volcano (if you're lucky to have a clear day!).
Augustin is a great host and did everything to make us feel comfortable. The included breakfast was very nice too. The rooms are spacious and you're welcome to use the common living room area.

Arenal attractions are located close to the property - Observatory Lodge, Sky Trek, hiking trails etc.

I would have rated it 5 stars, but the poor access road to takes off 1 star. From La Fortuna, you have to drive nearly 30-40 minutes on an extremely poorly paved road. If you're arriving in the dark (like we did), it's definitely not fun. If you can live with that, you'll enjoy your stay.

Don't let the poor roads of Arenal put you off. Get a good 4x4 and you won't have any problems.

  • Nepenthe B&B is beautiful. Placed above the Arenal Lake with a view on the volcano...the setting of Nepenthe is amazing. When you stay there you avoid the crowdy and very touristic town of La Fortuna which is comfortably to reach in 10 Minutes from Nepenthe. Augustin gave us a lot of information what to do in the area and CostaRica itself. Thanks so much for having us. HIGHLY Recommended

  • Great Stay, Nice facilities, breakfast and attention provided. Word of Caution, The place sits on top of a high hill so that view is amazing but you have to be cautious driving up the tall 'hill' or have an appropriate vehicle. Dont let my comments turn you away though, If i stayed longer i would have loved to enjoy the place.

  • We greatly enjoyed our stay. The accommodations are spacious, have beautiful hand made Costa Rican furniture, and have lots of attentive details. Breakast is fresh juice, eggs, fruit, beans and rice and more. It was the best we had in Costa Rica. The photos do not capture the spectacular views. Have a massage at the spa ...especially good if you like deep work. Enjoy the hot tub before. The road to get there is a bit rough and typical Costa Rica. Hammocks, and hanging chairs adorn the expansive veranda and provide many venues to relax. An adventure we were happy to enjoy.

  • I wish I could rate Nepenthe B&B, Agustin, and Gordon and Nancy with more stars. This place was incredible!!! The scenery was breathtaking with views of Arenal lake and volcano. Agustin and the staff were fantastic. They went way out of their way to make our stay a pleasant one. When we arrived back to the cabina after an outing to find my daughters elephant, giraffe, and zebra toys artfully placed around an elephant made of bath towels I was amazed and my daughter was thrilled. Incredible!!!
