About This Listing
We offer 2 rooms in the main house, each with a separate entrance, private bath, queen size bed, a small refrigerator and coffeemaker. These rooms open to a large veranda with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, Arenal volcano and our swimming pool.
•Nepenthe Bed and Breakfast is Beautiful piece of paradise located in the little town of El Castillo of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. We are 35 minutes traveling west from La Fortuna downtown. Surrounded by the magical rain forest and exotic wild life (like howler monkeys and toucans) you can appreciate the magnificent Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake, enjoy beautiful sunsets from our infinity edge pool or relax in the Jacuzzi or with a Massage in The Blue Lagoon Spa.
** An advice: because of our location a bit remote up in the hills, renting a car is recommended (a 4WD will be better) as activities and scenic attractions are spread out. This is cheaper in comparison with pay taxi to go to restaurants, attractions or transport from the airport.
** Tres Cabras Restaurant at Nepenthe is located on the grounds of Nepenthe and serve a daily prix fixe dinner menu with handmade food and fresh local ingredients.

We really enjoyed staying in the main house. Daily breakfast was delicious and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The pictures don't do the amazing view justice.
Agustin was helpful during our stay and helped us book our ziplining adventure. Gordon, the owner, was also very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with him over coffee and drinks.
The restaurant has a new chef, Benedict, who is very talented and passionate about food. Everything was delicious (some of the best food we had in Costa Rica), but keep in mind the menu is verbal only with no prices listed, so plan on paying more than the old restaurant's prices.
Also, don't underestimate the bumpiness of the road to get to Nepenthe/El Castillo - lots of potholes, bring a 4x4. One other thing to note is once the sun goes down, it's undesirable to venture along the road to get to the town so the nights can be somewhat uneventful.
Overall, we definitely recommend staying here. Lots to do and see.
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we were blown away by how amazing this property was. The view is unmatched. Absolutely breathtaking. Augustine was extremely helpful with suggestions and a helpful eye for wildlife spotting. 4x4 is a must and the road made for a great part of the adventure. Ate dinner and lunch at the onsite restraint and Chef Benedict was incredible. His food was the best we had in country and he was a total character. Hilarious. Overall, count have asked for a better experience.
The view from the lake was superb! The room was very clean and big and we enjoyed very much Chef Benedict's conversations and meals! The whole experience was great. A special thanks to Alejandro who's profesionalism and smile made our stay even better! Oh, and great breakfasts every morning.
This was a great place to stay near Arenal! El Castillo is a beautiful mountain town with sweeping views and none of the hustle and bustle of La Fortuna. It is very close to the National park entrance. The rooms at Nepenthe are cozy, clean and private. The staff are very helpful, friendly and accommodating! Breakfast was different every morning and delicious. Alejandro was available to answer any questions. The owners are Americans who spend half of the year in Costa Rica and have a cute Boston Terrier running around. Chef Benedict at the onsite restaurant makes every meal very special! The hotel is at the top of a long steep dirt road that is very intimidating the first time up! But it's doable and worth it to get the views at the top. Highly recommend this place!
Our host, Alejandro, was excellent, very personable and friendly, and always available for information or just plain chatting. He pointed out a toucan in a nearby tree and also a beautiful scarlet red macaw and allowed us the use of his binoculars for closeup views. The jungle sounds (birds, howler monkeys, cicadas) were plentiful and soothing to listen to.
The B&B itself was comfortable with all the essentials. The grounds and the view are even more breathtakingly beautiful than the pictures depict. Breakfast was fabulous and the restaurant, having only been open three days prior, was superb.
We met the owner and his lovely little dog and learned a lot about the area.
We would highly recommend Nepenthe B&B and will return someday in the future.
Great stay at Nepenthe! Clear view of the beautiful lake and volcano. Recommend this place to anyone staying in Arenal! Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Agustin was there everyday to answer questions and provide friendly service. Tres Cabras was pretty tasty, and highly recommended (you must go at least once, if not more although they don't change their prix fixe menu often). Breakfast each morning was authentic and filling as well.
We had booked the main house but we're instead given a small cabana at the end of a row of 4, below the main house. This worked to our advantage because we weren't connected to anyone and probably had more privacy but had to walk up the hill anytime we wanted to use the wifi.
Overall we were pleased with how secluded and "off the tourist path" Nepenthe was. The view was almost always beautiful (even with the rain clouds) and we enjoyed seeing the animals in the area and on the property. We did rent a 4WD SUV and so happy we did.
We tried to get messages at the on-site spa, with no luck. The business doesn't answer emails and even when the door was open we couldn't find anyone to talk to.
