I rented a 3 bedroom, and a few days before arrival was put into a 2 bedroom with a one bedroom a mile away. This fractured our weekend getaway, and put us in a stressful housing situation. I would not rent from this person again.
While I appreciate that she found us housing and didn't leave us homeless, we really didn't have the best time being separated.
Great location. 15 min walk to subway that gets you into downtown Chicago in about 15 min. Unit is as depicted in pictures. It was very clean when we arrived. Well decorated and amazingly comfortable beds. If we had read reviews from previous air bandb guests we would not have been surprised at the mediocrity of the place. As noted in past reviews: showers lack water pressure, security is an issue (Joanne told us we would arrive to the unit unlocked and to enter through the patio door where we would find the key on the table). Thought that was a little strange. Turns out the only way to lock the unit is from the inside with a piece of wood in the sliding door. Security made us nervous to leave valuables in the unit so we had to leave them in our car. Other irritants that owner could really easily fix included lack of dishes and cutlery, 2 clocks with dead batteries, only 4 towels in the unit, blow dryer did not work. FYI..."free parking" is on the street in a neighbourhood with no driveways. There were NO SPOTS available from Sat noon until late Sunday evening. We called airbandb when we could not reach Joanne at either # and they advised us to use garage. Joanne did try to contact us via email/cell/home # to tell us we could park in the garage for an extra $20 per day.
The apartment was just as the photos show. Exactly what we needed for a weekend visiting friends in Lincoln Park. Great neighborhood, close to a grocery and close to our friends apartment. A great place to crash and eat breakfast each morning. Place was pretty clean - can definitely tell it was a rental property but it was great for what we needed it for!
We came to Chicago to attend the Pitchfork Music Festival. The apartment looked exactly as advertised on the ad, which is good. We had everything we needed at the house and JoAnne and Steve were prompt to reply to our emails while staying at the apartment. The only issue we had was that there was construction going on two houses away and on Friday morning it woke us up very early, however nothing that JoAnne and Steve could do about it. There was no construction going on through the weekend though. Thanks for having us and we look forward to stay with you next year when we come back for the festival, if not before.
This is a nice place that looks pretty much exactly as advertised. The living room is spacious and the beds are all comfortable. Overall, it was good enough to host our group and the two bathrooms helped us get out the door quickly every morning. My complaints are only minor issues I had with the host and some maintenance issues. JoAnne knew that our group was 6 people and repeatedly promised (and confirmed) that she would either provide two extra twin mattresses or an air mattress for our group so that everyone had a place to sleep. We're flexible people, and when she offered this arrangement I cleared it with the group and we happily made our reservation at this property. Unfortunately, JoAnne did not honor this promise and did not respond to any of my texts or phone calls when I tried to find out if she would be bringing along any mattresses to the unit. My advice is not to count on any of these special promises on this site in general lesson ,learned. Also, the downstairs shower has just about the worst water pressure I've ever encountered. It was nice to have the extra shower, but it took about three times as long to do anything in there, especially wash your hair.
There were a lot of great things about this rental as well as some not so great things, so I am breaking my review into 3 parts.
The apartment was tastefully furnished and clean. Comfortable beds and furniture. Plenty of room. The backyard was a bonus. We took advantage of the gas grill and had a barbeque one night. Location is great. Nice, safe neighborhood with available street parking. There is a Jewel-Osco grocery store about 1/2 block away.
There are some maintenance issues with this unit. The 3rd floor patio door does not latch, so the only way to lock that door is by wedging a 2x4 to block the door. The hot water knob in the upstairs shower needs to be reattached as it sprays hot water everywhere. The closet door in the master bedroom is off its hinges. There was a fenced yard which was great for our dog, but 1 of the 3 gates into the yard had a missing latch, so even though the yard was fenced, we still had to keep our dog on leash because she kept trying to go out into the street using the unlatched gate.
The most irritating maintenance issue with this apartment was with a "hidden" smoke alarm. On the second night of our stay, we heard a loud chirping sound coming from the kitchen cabinet above the refrigerator. The chirping sounded like a smoke alarm's low battery warning chirp and was loud enough to keep most of our party up for much of the night. Problem was that that kitchen cabinet was completely empty, no smoke alarm or anything else inside. We did change the batteries in all the other smoke alarms in the apartment, but that did not stop the chirping coming from the cabinet. The only thing that could explain the chirping is that the kitchen cabinets were replaced several years ago and whoever replaced the cabinets forgot to remove a smoke alarm mounted to the ceiling and mounted the new cabinets to the ceiling right under the smoke alarm. Fast-forward several years and the battery in the trapped smoke alarm is now dying and the chirping will continue until the cabinet can be removed.
The owners of this unit are a little flaky when it comes to communications. The reservation itinerary I received from Airbnb showed the check-in and check-out times as "flexible", so I emailed the owners 11 days before checkin and said that I wanted to check-in between 3 and 4 pm and that I wanted to check-out in the afternoon.
One of the owners, Joanne, emailed me back indicating that my requests would not be a problem. She said to call her an hour before arriving so she could give me instructions on how to get in the apartment. I called her at 2 pm when she should have been expecting my call. No answer, so I left her a voicemail. When she didn't call me back, I called her again at 2:40. No answer, so then we called her husband Jason and left him a voicemail. Jason did call back and left us a voicemail giving us instructions on how to get into one of their rental units. The problem was that Jason gave us instructions on how to enter the wrong apartment. We called Jason back and he gave us the instructions to enter the correct apartment. When we entered the apartment, we found a nice family sitting in the living room which made us think that Jason sent us to the wrong apartment again. But it turned out that we were in the right apartment, the maids brought their family with them to the apartment while they cleaned. They finished up about 3:30 or so and did not seem to know that Joanne had told us that we could check in at 3:00.
Because of the mix-up with check-in times, I called Joanne at 9:15 the morning of our check-out, just to confirm that our afternoon check-out would not be a problem. She called me back about 10:15 and told me (for the first time) that the maid would be showing up at 11:00 because she had other guests checking in to the apartment at 2 pm that day, and we had to be out of the apartment by 11. I reminded her that she agreed to let us have an afternoon check-out. Since there was no way my group would have time to eat, pack up, and vacate the property on 45 minutes notice, I offered to do some of the cleaning for the maid (strip the beds and wash the sheets and towels), so that she could get done faster. Joanne said that would be fine and agreed (a second time) that we could have an afternoon check-out. The maid showed up promptly at 11:00 and said that Joanne did not call her to let her know that she had just agreed to let me have an afternoon checkout. I told the maid that she was welcome to clean the top floor of the rental since we were completely moved out of that level, but that we would need another hour or so to be out of the bottom floor. The maid said that she needed to talk to Joanne about it. Joanne then called me and started chewing me out for still being in the unit after 11:00. I'm not sure why, but she was particularly upset that the maid said we were eating eggs for breakfast. I reminded her that less than an hour ago, she said that I did not need to be out at 11:00 and would not need to check out until the afternoon. I told her that I already had the laundry running and that we had cleared out of the top floor of the rental so the maid could start there and that we'd be out of the bottom floor within an hour so the maid should have no problems cleaning apartment by 2:00 when the next guests were supposed to arrive. I told her that we'd be out of the bottom floor within an hour. Joanne reluctantly agreed (for the third time) to let us stay in the unit until the afternoon.
As we were finishing our packing, about 15 minutes before noon, a nice family from Brazil showed up at the back door with an AirBnB reservation form in their hand. I told them that we would be checking out in a few minutes, but that the apartment was still being cleaned and would not be ready until about 2:00. They said that the owners told them they could check in at noon. They brought their bags in and rested in the living room while we continued to pack up for our departure. We left shortly after noon, but for about 20 minutes, that small apartment held our party who were promised an afternoon checkout, the Brazilian family who was promised a noon checkin, and the maid who was told the unit would be empty from (phone number hidden).
Overall, I enjoyed the rental. It served our needs well, but I just wish that the owners had better communication and scheduling skills as that could save their guests, cleaning crews, and themselves a lot of frustration.
We were looking for a place to stay for a week in Chicago where we could launch ourselves for adventure. This was the place to stay for a neighborhood experience - quiet, walker friendly, close to grocery-restaurants- bars. JoAnne and Jason were accomodating and easy to get a hold of when we had questions. Will stay with them again.
Steve and Joanne's space was just what we needed when my boyfriend and I met another couple in Chicago for the weekend. It was so spacious and everything was very nice! The weather was nice enough for February that we were even able to make use of the patios. The area of town was very conveniently located to a lot of attractions. I would definitely book this space again!
Smooth transaction - Joanne was great to deal with and the convenience to the local neighborhoods was very affordable compared to local hotels. The building is conveniently located on the north side with access to many bars and restaurants. The duplex served our 4 adults very well and parking and access was great, thanks again!
