It's a true neighborhood! Sidewalks, lots of trees; community garden two blocks away; small commercial area one block away to eat, shop. Great for walking, running and hanging out.
Please see my description of restaurants and other recommendations below in the map/location section of the listing. Also, check out information under "space" or "getting around" for access to other parts of Decatur and Atlanta from here.
See more details above under ("space"). Close to MARTA rail--Eastlake station, about a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive from our house. MARTA Bus is even closer if you have time and inclination to make the switch with bus and rail. Take train from Eastlake to airport and all of metro Atlanta, or in the other direction to the Dekalb Farmers Market via Avondale Station. Nice walking from our house all around Decatur, which is both pedestrian and bike friendly. Downtown Decatur shops and restaurants are a pleasant and safe 20-minute walk away.
Other Things to Note
Our safe, convenient location, and the charm of our home and neighborhood make this airbnb listing the place for you!
You are as close to the MARTA rail here in Decatur as you would be at any in-town space--at a much more digestible price.
We look forward to welcoming you with coffee/tea and conversation, and other gestures of hospitality. Please, no smoking on premises. You are free to enjoy the art, antiques and books, but take away only memories. Many of these pieces are family heirlooms with plenty of history and significance to the owners.
Extra charge for more than two persons.
Instructions on keys, access, etc. will be given before you arrive at the home.
Full set of house rules and cautions (about escaping dogs), Internet connections, etc. are framed and placed in the guest room. If the owners are not at home, a neighbor will serve as concierge.
We felt welcomed by Ann and Bob, even after arriving much later than planned. Their home is comfortable and inviting, and we were comfortable in our guest room.
We most enjoyed their beautiful porch and swing, and we're able to reminisce our experiences of living in Decatur. We loved visiting with Ann and Bob, and so appreciate their hospitality.
My husband and I had a great nights stay with Ann in her home! We arrived later in the evening and had to leave in the morning, but she welcomed us, showed us to our rooms and made us some great coffee the next morning. :) The bed was super comfy too! Great spot for a quick stopover!
I have been a guest of Ann and Bob during the last 4 months, and thanks to their kindness and hospitality I enjoy Atlanta. Their house is warm and welcoming, close to the city of Decatur and to the public transports to go easily to the most interesting places of Atlanta. Ann and Bob were always ready to help me and to give me plenty of good advices to make my stay easier. If I returne in Atlanta I would definitely book this guest house again. Ann, Bob and Suzana, I wish you the best and hope to see you again.
We were visiting Atlanta on a self-guided tour of Civil Rights sites and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Ann Ritter's Guest Room, Funky Decatur/Oakhurst. Unfortunately, we did not meet Ann Ritter, as she was away, but we spoke with her partner Bob. The room was great and the bed/bedding was quite comfortable. The shared bathroom was roomy and had plenty of clean towels, washcloths, soaps, etc. It is best to be a “dog lover” if you seek to stay here, as the dogs are friendly, but rambunctious and not trained. The pleasant one-mile walk to the closest MARTA station made the sites of Atlanta easily accessible. We especially enjoyed the recently opened Civil Rights and Human Rights Museum in downtown Atlanta. And if you are in Atlanta on a Sunday morning, we highly recommend attending services at the Ebenezer Baptist Church adjacent to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Site. And Mary Mac’s Tea Room is a great spot for southern cooking and southern hospitality.
This was our first experience of Airbnb.
The location was perfect and we were close to our family. Our welcome by Ann was very good and we were made to feel part of the household.
Coffee was made for us every morning, and we were able to use the family kitchen to prepare our breakfast.
The bed was comfortable, and we had our own bathroom. We had a good stay and enjoyed being part of a busy household with Ann, her family, their cats and their dogs.
All in all a good chance to enjoy true American way of life, and enjoy conversations with our hostess and her family.
A native of the South Carolina Lowcountry, Ann Ritter has made her home in the Atlanta, GA, area for the past 33 years. She is an author, performer and business woman, who also teaches and practices yoga and yoga therapy. Her partner for airbnb, Bob Holmes, is a commercial landscaper with a degree in ornamental horticulture and a life-long interest in golf. He grew up in NC on a private golf course and estate managed by his father and owned by the Avery Rockefeller family. Ann and Bob have two recently grown children.
Ann likes films, books (she is in three book clubs) and long walks. When she has lots of time, she loves to cook. Among her favorite films are The Red Violin, Catch Me if You Can and The Green Mile. Bob likes music, from classical to country. He admires Carlos Santana and is pleased to see Santana's newest album debut.
The home in Oakhurst is most fortunately located in a highly walkable/bikeable area with many trees and gardens, and just about all you could want in conveniences--from a coffee shop to a quick mart, and nine restaurants and pubs located one and one-half blocks away.
After raising two children in Decatur and hosting many, many visiting students over the past 25 years, Ann and Bob look forward to getting to know other travelers from around the globe, and to welcoming them with good coffee/tea and conversation.
