We have a great house in a treasure of a neighborhood! Front porch and gardens welcome you here; Sidewalks, lots of trees; community garden two blocks away; small commercial area one block away to eat, shop. Great for walking, running and hanging out.
Please see my description of restaurants and other recommendations below in the map/location section of the listing. Also, check out information under "space" or "getting around" for access to other parts of Decatur and Atlanta from here.
See more details above under ("space"). Close to MARTA rail--Eastlake station, about a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive from our house. MARTA Bus is even closer if you have time and inclination to make the switch with bus and rail. Take train from Eastlake to airport and all of metro Atlanta, or in the other direction to the Dekalb Farmers Market via Avondale Station. Nice walking from our house all around Decatur, which is both pedestrian and bike friendly. Downtown Decatur shops and restaurants are a pleasant and safe 20-minute walk away.
Other Things to Note
Our safe, convenient location, and the charm of our home and neighborhood make this airbnb listing the place for you!
You are as close to the MARTA rail here in Decatur as you would be at any in-town space--at a much more digestible price.
We look forward to welcoming you with coffee/tea and conversation, and other gestures of hospitality. Please, no smoking on premises. You are free to enjoy the art, antiques and books, but take away only memories. Many of these pieces are family heirlooms with plenty of history and significance to the owners.
Extra charge for more than two persons.
Instructions on keys, access, etc. will be given before you arrive at the home.
Full set of house rules and cautions (about escaping dogs), Internet connections, etc. are framed and placed in the guest room. If the owners are not at home, a neighbor will serve as concierge.
Ann is a very nice host, made arrangements to let me in late night (as my arrival got delayed)
Beautiful Old House with all the amenities. Liked this place.
Great location. I was very quickly in and out but enjoyed the art filled home and good coffee.
The house has a very unique decor, a beautiful garden and patio. The neighborhood is beautiful and quiet, and has some shops, restaurants, and coffee shops within walking distance. The room is very spacious and has everything you need. I particularly appreciated the idea of leaving a fridge, a kettle and some kitchen utensils for guests to use. I didn't interact with Ann much, but she seemed like a great guest. The only downside I see is the wifi connection: although there is one, the signal is very weak in the guest room and both days I was unable to connect from my phone and laptop.
My check-in experience was a bit odd: I wasn't given a key at first and I had to ask for one. Although the description says that guests can use other parts of the house, nobody showed the other rooms (including the kitchen) to me, so I didn't know where it was located. This is probably just a logistical problem due to the fact that Ann was at work, but I felt a bit lost at first.
Ann is a very nice host. I lived in here for about 20 days, and on my first morning, she gave me a ride to the MARTA train station. In the weekends, she always gave me a ride to farmer's market or other market. They already prepare everything for you, soap, shampoo, towel, bottle water. Q-tips...
Ann is such a welcoming and courteous host. We loved the house, walking to nice small restaurants and cafe` in the village, and to the local metro station to get to downtown. Beautiful lush setting for a quite and relaxing stay. We felt very comfortable at Ann's and would recommend it in a hurt bit.
My stay with Ann and Bob was wonderful! I felt very comfortable and at home. The listing and pictures are all very accurate - a beautiful room and lovely neighborhood. This is a great location if you want to explore Decatur or Oakhurst and very accessible by public transport. Thanks Ann and Bob!
About the Host, Ann
A native of the South Carolina Lowcountry, Ann Ritter has made her home in the Atlanta, GA, area for the past 33 years. She is an author, performer and business woman, who also teaches and practices yoga and yoga therapy. Her partner for airbnb, Bob Holmes, is a commercial landscaper with a degree in ornamental horticulture and a life-long interest in golf. He grew up in NC on a private golf course and estate managed by his father and owned by the Avery Rockefeller family. Ann and Bob have two recently grown children.
Ann likes films, books (she is in three book clubs) and long walks. When she has lots of time, she loves to cook. Among her favorite films are The Red Violin, Catch Me if You Can and The Green Mile. Bob likes music, from classical to country. He admires Carlos Santana and is pleased to see Santana's newest album debut.
The home in Oakhurst is most fortunately located in a highly walkable/bikeable area with many trees and gardens, and just about all you could want in conveniences--from a coffee shop to a quick mart, and nine restaurants and pubs located one and one-half blocks away.
After raising two children in Decatur and hosting many, many visiting students over the past 25 years, Ann and Bob look forward to getting to know other travelers from around the globe, and to welcoming them with good coffee/tea and conversation.
