I never actually met Maria, she said she was out of town and her daughter in law Lexi would let me in and give me a key. That was pretty much the end of any pleasantries. When I got there I noticed this was basically a house that's been turned into sro style living. I never felt overly welcome to use the kitchen in the evenings as there was usually somebody sleeping in the attached living room, which had also been rented. The room itself was a drag, even after I closed the vent the heater seemed to pump air into my room all night and with only a window the size of my fist, I woke up sweaty more than once. I ended up spending most nights at friends houses. Overall it felt like I wasted my money, for the same price I coulda stayed in the mission at a similarly confortable sro, and had a sink in my room, where I could brush my teeth on my own schedule. One last comment, got a totally passive aggressive message from Maria about "remembering that there is no smoking" after I lit incense in an attempt to clear the mustiness from the air. (Remember, Maria was never there) A knock on my door woulda been far less creepy.
The room was sufficient for what I needed. The bed was comfortable. The location of this house is ideal. I had privacy and spent my time there with no issues or conflicts.
I have stayed Maria's for a week. The room was located in underground and there are 2 more rooms where other people was occupying. The room was clean and nice size for me. You will be provided one bath towel. It has a refrigerator.
The shared bath I was using can be cleaner. The shower room is amazingly small. you can't really move around there. I haven't used another one upstair and don't know how big and clean it is. Water was always leaking from the toilet bowl area.
somebody was sleeping in the kitchen area. I had to leave for work early in the morning so kind of hesitate to use the kitchen. The bed's comforter and sheet were old and I couldn't help but notice there were some stains on the sheet.
The house is located nearby a Glen Park Bart station(15 min walk) and right next to the freeway so it is very convenient if you need to move around the town.
WIFI was very good. I've never have a hard time connecting it.
Over all, it is good stay for the budget for short term.
Maria is a wonderful host and was always attentive to my wants and needs. I have stayed there several times and always enjoyed my stay
Staying at Maria's has been great! While the accommodations downstairs are pretty basic, it's very quiet and the price can't be beat.
The location is in the outer mission, but there are plenty of transportation options to get you anywhere in sf you need to go.
The neighborhood is quiet and safe. While there is some traffic noise, it's not bad, and it's due to commuters going to work/proximity to the freeway. There are far, far noisier neighborhoods in sf!
All in all, it was a great experience and Maria is a terrific host! She's extremely helpful and nice. I will return when my plans bring me back that way.
Staying at Maria's has been great. Great host!
Maria was a really nice and available person during all of our stay. However we had some little issus with the room because of the construction works she was doing in the house. We didn't get the room we
rent first (but the new room was ok!) And then we had to change again. Otherwise you pay for what you get so it was ok and pretty cheap for SF.
Stayed at this house for the second time. Obviously, with the current renovations in the basement things are quite a mess. Be prepared for some downers such as construction noise in the mornings (didn't bother too much during the week as I got up early anyway) or having to exit and re-enter the house to enter the upstairs washroom. This situation is only temporary though and only affects the basement area.
But once again, great value and still a way better (also in terms of authenticness!) option than staying in a hostel, albeit it is a bit far out. Maria always tries hard to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Much appreciated. Extra points for the social factor at this house: the roommates tend to be really interesting folks you can have a good chat with after dinner. I also got the chance to meet Maria's awesome family. They even hosted a social on Sunday night which was really nice.
Looking forward to next time! :)
