Nice and quiet room in large and sunny 3 bedroom apartment. Very quiet area but within easy walking distance to downtown (4 short bus stops or approx. 10-15 min walk).
Medical Stay - Students - 1 month plus welcome
We speak English - Spanish -German
The room faces the backyard and if you are lucky and wake up at the right moment, you'll see a hummingbird fly by. Instead of traffic noise you will wake up hearing the birds chirping.
Start the day with a leisurely breakfast, that comes with fresh fruit, a good cup of coffee or tea, real bread and marmalade or cereal. We also have a Magic Bullet if you'd rather mix up a smoothie.
We have a large colorful living room with large windows letting in a lot of sunlight, which really is the place to sit and relax, read a book and check the e-mails and plan out your trip.
If you don't speak any Spanish or little, no problem. We also speak English and German. French is rusty, but I have a neighbor that can help if needed.
I have tons of books around, bring one and leave another one.
In case of any questions, just ask and I'll be happy to answer them.
You get use of the kitchen and washing machine and if needed you can surf on one of our computers.
The room has a private, ensuite bathroom.
Interaction with Guests
That is up to you: entirely.
We love to share and enjoy common meals. We can toss a coin who cooks. We have been on trips, walked downtown and hung out in the local bars, but we respect the space and silence just the same.
We have some great restaurants and bars only a few blocks to the north in up-coming Barrio Escalante or head on over to San Pedro with it's night time hustle and bustle from the university crowd. Since my son Noel has turned 18 this year, he'll be happy to be your guide.
In case you are staying with us on the weekend, join us for a trip to the farmers market, where we stock up on fruits and veggies. In case you'd like your adrenaline going, join me for a bike ride.
We are 1 block from Avenida Central in Barrio Francisco Peralta / east of Los Yoses / south of Escalente (East of downtown and before San Pedro).
During the day catch the inexpensive buses that pass by every other minute to move around, once it gets dark you are better off catching a cab.
Bus stop is one block away. Any bus saying: San Pedro works
For your trip from the airport we can recommend a great shuttle service for $ 30 flat rate or if you arrive during the day you can catch the public bus from the airport to downtown and then a cab which all together will cost around $ 5-7, which is what I usually do too.
Close to the UCR, Veritas, U Latina and some other universities.
Other Things to Note
For years we have tried to help the animals that cross our path and we do have a couple of friendly dogs and cats, which we have rescued off the streets and which we haven't been able to place into permanent homes yet. While the 2 cats mostly keep to themselves and will hide from you, the dogs will go for a walk with you anytime. They know the neighborhood pretty well and will lead you along.
We offer Medical Stay, Semester abroad, homestay and are also a great choice for those wishing to take some language classes in San Jose. We speak English, Spanish and German and on occasion give personalized Spanish classes on-on-one. These can be started via (website hidden) to get you ready for your trip and then enhanced while you stay with us. There is also a very good Language School close by, some of my guests say the best.
We always enjoy meeting nice people and are pretty easygoing.
Our dogs are used to visitors and love treats just not during dinner. They can have all the leftovers after and will wag their tails just as much. They also love going for walks or a jog, for those that like the company.
Please, no smoking in the house.
Amazing place to stay, honestly right in the heart of San Jose, CR. She's about 15 min. walk both to downtown anther the shopping is, and 10-15 the opposite direction towards the mall and San Pedro. 5 min. walk to the grocery store, and around the corner from this upscale restaurant/ bar. She is very knowledgeable about San Jose and surrounding cities/ beach areas, so definitely ask her for directions ANYWHERE. Also, there is an atm about 2 blocks west from her home. For some reason you have to swipe a card to get into the cubicle, but honestly you can swipe any card to get in there. There's a bowling alley across the street from the auto mercado (grocery store), and if you go about 2 blocks past both, there's a yoga studio/cafe. The people were bey friendly and spoke little English, but enough for me to understand what's the next pose. This is also a great way too pick up on your Spanish because of the repetition. Bring a little mosquito spray for her place bc they are heavy this year at night! She has daily breakfast which is amazing, with homemade bread and doughnuts, and fruit as sweet as candy. Don't be afraid to cook for yourself with some groceries, she's very open to the kitchen. The cats won't bother you and neither the 2 dogs, however, the dogs will bark once you come up the stairs. Very friendly though. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, so i encourage to at least try one of everything. There's a reggae club (10 min walk west, ladies night in free on Thursdays), Huxton Club (ladies night free entry and drinks on Tuesdays), and specialty nights at the restaurant around the corner. You can take the bus just about anywhere for cheaper than a taxi, by default, but they run anywhere around €265- €600(=about $0.52- $1.20). This trip is for sure an experience you should take with Alexandra by your side!
Alexandra was (is) absolutely wonderful! She went above and beyond to insure I was comfortable and fed... She even gave me a snack for the road when I left. The beds (I slept in both rooms) were very comfortable, and her animals very sweet. I highly recommend a stay with Alexandra. She is helpful and engaging, yet unobtrusive when you desire alone time. I already have my next stay with her booked:)
Alexandra was a pleasant and very helpful host! We enjoyed meeting the cats and dogs that lived in the house and particularly enjoyed the delicious breakfast Alexandra made us in the morning! Alexandra was very flexible with our schedules and very helpful with our travel arrangements. I would definitely recommend staying with her.
This was my second time staying with Alexandra, and I'm glad I get to add more to my review... because THE BREAKFAST! Not only is she a helpful, friendly and very generous host, but both times she made me the most delicious breakfasts! I can't wait to return to Costa Rica and stay with her again. Also, if you're a pet lover, there are the sweetest animals running around.
Alexandra greeted me with a warm, friendly hug and instantly cast away any apprehensions I had about traveling to Costa Rica alone. She handed me a map of the city and a guidebook to help me plan out my trip. I had a wonderful time in San José while I stayed at her home. It's very modest, but the room contained everything I needed plus a private shower. In the mornings, Alexandra prepared a lovely spread of fruits and toast or her special baked treats with a strong cup of coffee. She also respected my privacy and if I wanted some time to rest or phone home, I didn't feel uncomfortable doing so. Needless to say, I'm definitely missing Costa Rica now especially since I've returned to the chilly New England weather... Highly recommend this place for its hospitality and walking distance proximity to downtown shops and attractions.
Alexandra is a perfect host. She will show you around if you'd like, but she and the room give you privacy also. The room is simple and comfortable, and Alexandra has it fully equipped with books and toiletries if you need them.

Love to read, enjoy the days as they come. Every now and then a stray comes along - some have stayed, while other cats and dogs have found new homes, so there is always some assortment of 4 legged friends around.
I have started to add a couple of additional listings from very good friends and I do vouch for each of the listings added. I hope that these listings can round out a trip to Costa Rica!
