Nice and quiet room in large and sunny 3 bedroom apartment. Very quiet area but within easy walking distance to downtown (4 short bus stops or approx. 10-15 min walk).
Medical Stay - Students - 1 month plus welcome
We speak English - Spanish -German
The room faces the backyard and if you are lucky and wake up at the right moment, you'll see a hummingbird fly by. Instead of traffic noise you will wake up hearing the birds chirping.
Start the day with a leisurely breakfast, that comes with fresh fruit, a good cup of coffee or tea, real bread and marmalade or cereal. We also have a Magic Bullet if you'd rather mix up a smoothie.
We have a large colorful living room with large windows letting in a lot of sunlight, which really is the place to sit and relax, read a book and check the e-mails and plan out your trip.
If you don't speak any Spanish or little, no problem. We also speak English and German. French is rusty, but I have a neighbor that can help if needed.
I have tons of books around, bring one and leave another one.
In case of any questions, just ask and I'll be happy to answer them.
You get use of the kitchen and washing machine and if needed you can surf on one of our computers.
The room has a private, ensuite bathroom.
That is up to you: entirely.
We love to share and enjoy common meals. We can toss a coin who cooks. We have been on trips, walked downtown and hung out in the local bars, but we respect the space and silence just the same.
We have some great restaurants and bars only a few blocks to the north in up-coming Barrio Escalante or head on over to San Pedro with it's night time hustle and bustle from the university crowd. Since my son Noel has turned 18 this year, he'll be happy to be your guide.
In case you are staying with us on the weekend, join us for a trip to the farmers market, where we stock up on fruits and veggies. In case you'd like your adrenaline going, join me for a bike ride.
We are 1 block from Avenida Central in Barrio Francisco Peralta / east of Los Yoses / south of Escalente (East of downtown and before San Pedro).
During the day catch the inexpensive buses that pass by every other minute to move around, once it gets dark you are better off catching a cab.
Bus stop is one block away. Any bus saying: San Pedro works
For your trip from the airport we can recommend a great shuttle service for $ 30 flat rate or if you arrive during the day you can catch the public bus from the airport to downtown and then a cab which all together will cost around $ 5-7, which is what I usually do too.
Close to the UCR, Veritas, U Latina and some other universities.
For years we have tried to help the animals that cross our path and we do have a couple of friendly dogs and cats, which we have rescued off the streets and which we haven't been able to place into permanent homes yet. While the 2 cats mostly keep to themselves and will hide from you, the dogs will go for a walk with you anytime. They know the neighborhood pretty well and will lead you along.
We offer Medical Stay, Semester abroad, homestay and are also a great choice for those wishing to take some language classes in San Jose. We speak English, Spanish and German and on occasion give personalized Spanish classes on-on-one. These can be started via (website hidden) to get you ready for your trip and then enhanced while you stay with us. There is also a very good Language School close by, some of my guests say the best.
Great experience overall. Alexandra and her son are great hosts. She offered to pick me up from the bus station when I arrived, made dinner and breakfast (with her homemade breads), was happy to help with logistics and things to do/see. The house is in a nice, quiet neighborhood, but still within walking distance to bars, restaurants, and major bus routes. Would definitely recommend staying here.
Staying with Alexandra was the perfect way to start off my trip in Costa Rica. I stayed with her for two nights, and my room was clean, comfortable, and there was even fresh fruit, bottled water, and travel books waiting on the desk when I arrived.
I think what I enjoyed most about staying with Alexandra was the warmth she exudes. When I arrived, she greeted me with a hug and promptly offered a delicious cup of green tea with pineapple. I then spent the rest of the evening settling in and playing with Alexandra's adorable dogs. I felt at home almost instantly.
The breakfast Alexandra prepares is delicious-- homemade bread, served with jams, peanut butter, and butter, along with fresh fruits, cheese, and French press coffee.
If you're looking for a warm, relaxed atmosphere at an affordable price, you should consider staying with Alexandra. You get to relax in a lovely Costa Rican home in a central location, and you also get a wonderful host who can give you advice on how to navigate San Jose and other places in the country to which you may be traveling. Should I find myself back in Costa Rica, I will definitely look to stay with Alexandra again.
Alexandra is a very kind host, she makes the most amazing bread and cakes and breakfast is good ! She lives with her son (shy) and 3 dogs from the street.
The house is very very basic and if you're not worried about hygiene or the smell of dogs, go for it !!! But I must say, despite Alex's great welcoming, my back ached and it was not up to my standards...
Alexandra is the host with the most. It was my first time in San Jose. As a die hard gringo, Alexandra helped me navigate the streets of San Jose with her fluent command of Spanish and English. I also am a die hard animal lover. Because of Alexandra's wonderful heart, she opens her doors to an occasional precious creature who, in total, are all wonderfully behaved, super lovely, and super fun. It made my experience all that much more enjoyable. Her place is located very near downtown San Jose and not far from neighborhood restaurants and bars. Her place is inviting and comfortable--you never feel like a stranger. Lots of sun. Alexandra will sit with you over a perfect breakfast of her bread and fresh tropical fruit. No more apples for us gringos. I'd absolutely stay with her again. It's hard to imagine a more friendly and more helpful host than Alexandra.
I really loved everything about my stay there. The minute I walked in I felt right at home. The warm living room with colorful murals, Alexandra, her dogs, her yummy home made bread....everything left footprints in my heart. I will definitely go back!
Alexandra and her son Noel were the best hosts we have ever had. I stayed in their spare room with my boyfriend, and we were immediately embraced by the kindness of Alexandra, Noel, and their animals (who are all absolute lovebugs). Alexandra faithfully provided us with ample wheat bread and pretzel bites that she all makes from scratch. If you enjoy homemade fresh bread, support her and buy a loaf or two for a picnic or quick lunch! Noel was also a great guide to the San Pedro area, and he was always happy to talk and share stories. The apartment itself is in a very vibrant and safe area of San Jose. There were many nights that we walked home in a slightly drunken stupor, and we always felt blissfully safe. We highly recommend Alexandra's place for its excellent location, fantastic hosts, and ease of accessibility. Support this great host family, their dogs, and try Alexandra's delicious fresh bread!
Alexandria and her son are both very nice people anxious to accommodate their guests. If you primary concern is cost, as was mine, this is a good place.
Alexandra is an extremely generous host and wonderful bread and yogurt maker which she bounteously shares.
The location is very convenient to downtown and very much worth the cost.
I enjoyed my stay.
The best way to explain my experience is that it is a really good deal. Fruit breakfast in the Morning included and the location for me was Great.
I'll be back when I go back to visit Costa Rica next Year.
Was feeling home, why ask for more.
