The Old Mount Gambier Gaol opened as a functioning 'English Prison' in 1866 and closed it doors as a correctional facility in 1994.
In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience.
Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. We now offer affordable accommodation for all travelers and groups.
We have converted ex-prison cells into dorm rooms, twin rooms and doubles. For the squeamish at heart we do also provide rooms which were not used as cells, but were instead the warden’s offices. All of our bathroom and kitchen facilities are communal except in the family room. We do offer some cells with en-suite toilets.
Double rooms contain a double bed, twins contain one set of single bunk beds. The family room contains two bedrooms (a double and a twin), a private lounge area, bathroom and kitchenette.
Both sides of our gaol have communal living areas and kitchens. We have two large outdoor courtyard areas for guests to relax or play in. We provide free wifi for our guests during their stay. We have ample free parking directly out the front, which easily accommodates caravans or buses.
We are happy to arrange free pick up or drop off for any of our guests to public transport depots within our business hours.
Please note all guests are required to arrive and check in before 9pm at night. Check out is at 10.30am.
You can expect friendly, helpful service during your stay here at the gaol. Pop into the office on arrival, locate your cell, grab a complimentary tea or coffee and have a self-guided tour of the gaol.
We are located about five minutes walk from Mount Gambier's main street. Here you will find an array of restaurants, cafes and shops.
Right next door to the gaol are tennis courts and an outdoor aquatic centre.
Public transport is not fantastic, but most of our attractions are close by.
The famous Blue Lake is a ten minute walk from the gaol, the Cave Gardens are about seven minutes away.
We had a very good experience in staying former prison "The Old Mount Gambier Gaol" "The Old Gaol".
Would recommend to anyone. Clean and tidy. Clear roules.
Friendly and warm welcome. We felt very free and comfortable "in prison".

It was an interesting experience to spend a night behind bars in an old gaol like this! The rooms / cells are comfortable and everything is very clean. It was also interesting to read all the historic information that is provided about the building. We also appreciated the free WiFi that is available in the chapel / lounge room. - A personal advice for everybody who travels to Mount Gambier by car: we would highly recommend to arrive early and not to drive during dusk. The number of accidents with (red) kangaroos in this area is especially high, so it is quite likely that you will witness things you really don't want to see at that time of the day or worse, might get involved in an accident yourself.
Very friendly hosts and the history of the gaol made for a very unique stay. Conveniently located to most of Mount Gambier's top attractions.
The Old Mount Gambier Gaol
My three-day stay in Cell 25 at the old Gaol was very pleasant. The room and adjacent chapel/lounge and kitchen were scrupulously clean and tidy. The bed was confortable, the linen of great quality, and there was a bonus hand basin and flushing toilet. The hot shower was just next-door. The thick walls and above-door window made my stay in the cell an introspective one. But there was plenty of sheltered outdoor spaces in the various exercise yards, and communal living in the lounges and kitchens. I met the owners and enjoyed their friendly, can-do attitude. The staff was welcoming and able to offer appropriate advice about where the shops are, and what to see and do in Mt Gambier. And there is plenty to see and do. Even if you don’t leave the gaol and just explore its interesting environment and history.
Great hosts, very helpful and informative. Comfortable and clean cells! Very good facilities, we had a great time!!! Thanks!
