About this listing

I completely loved my stay with Kurt and bis family! The room was delightful, clean, and spacious. The sunset view from the wrap-around porch was stunning. I felt so pleasantly nurtured by the fresh fruit and coffee breakfast grown right their farm.

Description

The space

A very nice bedroom with private bath in a very nice house in a very nice part of the Big Island. Stay on a small coffee/macadamia nut plantation. Enjoy your stay in Kona without breaking the bank. Price includes a big breakfast, use of snorkel equipment, wifi throughout the house. Truly magnificent ocean views of Kealakekua Bay.

The room has a double bed and a twin bed. There's a nice view out the large window of the garden and orchard, and a wonderful skylight tor enjoying the stars at night. We have a table set up on the lanai to take in magnificent ocean sunsets.

A great location for exploring the Big Island. Nearby you will find some of Hawaii's best ocean activities, nature hikes, and archeological sites (The Place of Refuge National Park is a ten minute drive). This is rural Hawaii at its finest, yet there are several fine (and reasonable) restaurants and a supermarket five minutes drive away.

Guest access

Complimentary beach and snorkel equipment, beach towels, hair dryers, refrigerator, microwave. Guests are welcome to congregate any place in the house, including a magnificent balcony that looks out over the ocean. . It's a great place to watch the sun go down. There's also a table in the garden area in front of the house for guests.

Interaction with guests

On check in we give the guests a brief tour of what's available for them. The host almost always joins the guests after breakfast and over a cup of coffee he will make suggestions about things to see and do that may not be in "normal" guide books. Our aim is that you will have a truly exceptional experience on the Big Island and we do our part to help make that happen.

Guests that wish may join the host, schedule permitting, for a tour of coffee, macadamia and various tropical plants. Learn about the uses of some of these plants by the ancient Hawaiians on your tour led by Dr. Weigelt.

The neighborhood

There is a tremendous ocean view at this bed and breakfast. It's a rural setting -- Old Hawaii at its finest. No close houses, no highway noise, a wonderful variety of tropical trees and plants and birds. Peaceful to say the least. Yet, it's only five minutes drive to some fine and reasonable restaurants and a supermarket and a ten minute drive to some of Hawaii's finest snorkeling and hiking. Many guests like to get take away food from one of the nearby restaurants, swing by the supermarket and pick up some beer or wine or fruit drinks, bring it home and watch the sunset from the lanai.

Getting around

Public transportation on the outer Hawaiian Islands is poor. Although there's the occasional bus, I'd very strongly suggest renting a car. Besides helping you get here, it will allow you to explore the intriguing nooks and crannies of the Big Island. You won't regret that investment. If you're from one of the countries that drive on the left side of the road, people drive quite courteously here -- you'll adjust quickly and painlessly.

Other things to note

Hawaii State taxes applied to your accommodation are 13.42%. While we wish we didn't have to charge this extra fee--we are required by the state to collect it for them. This is the only additional fee paid to the hosts after check in. There are no "single-night stay fees", no parking fees, no other fees of any kind.

Please note that one night reservations for this room depend on existing scheduling. One night reservations, with no additional fees, are often possible, but not always. Please ask.

We had a wonderful stay! Even though we only stayed one night, Kurt was very helpful with planning our holidays. The views from the garden are splendid.

Kurt's place is not far below the main road through Captain Cook, but quite secluded-feeling, with a marvelous view from the porch out over the ocean. His directions are detailed and helpful. We enjoyed our small exploration of the coffee and mac nut trees, and swinging under the avocado tree with our toddler. Kurt and his wife and daughter were all very friendly and welcoming to us all (including a potentially rambunctious two year old), and the breakfast they served was delicious and filling. They reserve a shelf in their fridge for you and welcome you to use their microwave, but don't allow guests to cook in the kitchen. This room is "budget" in that it does not have an ocean view or private porch access and just fits the two beds in it plus desk - with a good sized closet. No AC, but a rotating fan that made us comfortable in the early evening. Private bathroom with tub was nice and clean. We would stay again if we were in the area. Thanks!

译文 The persistence is adventure to Kurt's home, the traffic is very bad, GPS cannot reach place, wear a path and the jungle. Because too dark, so dangerous... Room is very clean and also provides breakfast, we need to do some simple food kitchen with children, host was not agreed, we have no requirement. In transportation and the kitchen is friends live in this is not recommended. It is too scary. But host is very warm, the dog is cute.

Response from Kurt:
Grandma taught me long ago that you can't make all the people happy all the time. This small family from Canton, China probably would have been happier staying at a hotel in Waikiki or renting a house in a sub-division. Still, it was interesting for us, and maybe for the other guests too, to get a glimpse of today's urban Chinese new to travel.

Kurt and his family were very welcoming on our arrival. We stayed only one night, but our room was very comfortable. In the morning, Kurt poured us some of his home grown coffee (which was delicious) and made us breakfast. The location is very quiet with beautiful scenic views of the ocean and sunset. We made a few other friends along our way... a couple outdoor cats, pot-bellied pigs, family dog, and a horse and donkey greeted us on our way in. This place was truly a gem to find! We hope you will love it as much as we did!

This place really IS at the Edge of the World! We arrived at night and the drive in was pretty challenging with some hairpin turns and the like. The house is large with several rooms for guests. Clean room, comfortable beds, nice shower in our bathroom (which was in the hallway but for our use only). I had some difficulty with the scent of laundry detergent or perfume in the bed linens- I'm sensitive to scents, so that was an issue for me. The breakfast served in the morning was pretty special..with fruits all from the property, and served on the large deck, with a most spectacular view. Our host was full of tips about things to see and places to go. And the coffee, grown on the land, was great! (and I don't even drink coffee!)

Response from Kurt:
Thank you for your kind words, Marian. In our fifteen wonderful years of running the Beautiful Edge of the World B&B, we have had a few guests, but only a few, who were ultra sensitive to normal things such as laundry detergents. This would have been such an easy matter to fix had we only known about your problem, either before you came through our email communication or after you arrived. We truly want all our guests to be comfortable and happy and we stand ready to do our best to make that happen. My suggestion to you is that in the future you communicate your needs better—what you wrote surprised me. Also, I truly hope your exaggerated description of the county road here doesn't deter guests from coming. It would be a pity. Finally, just for your information, "Edge of the World" is what James Cook called the area in his log book when he sailed into Kealakekua Bay -- I stole the name from him and added a "Beautiful". Happy day.
