About This Listing
SUNSET SUITE has 2 rooms for 5 people: upstairs queen & single bed, carved teak furniture and terrace; downstairs queen bed and coconut rattan furniture. Open marble bathroom has hot shower and western toilet. Surrounding rice field & mountain.
The Swallow Guesthouse SUNSET SUITE has room for 5 people. SUNSET has one very large open room upstairs with a queen size bed, a small single bed, plenty of handmade furniture for storing your things and a large patio to watch the birds and sunset. Downstairs is the second bright bedroom with three windows, a queen size bed and again hand-made coconut rattan furniture. The huge open marble bathroom is also located downstairs and has a hot shower and western toilet. It is suitable for traveling families, writers, artists, biking or trekking groups or people who want a longer term place to create and relax in the peace and quiet of the "REAL" Bali.
Guests can relax while watching the surrounding daily life in the rice fields and mountain views from various lounging areas and patios. One of these lookouts is the tall Gazebo or “Bale” in Balinese. It sits above the shared separated exterior kitchen which is fully equipped with cooking facilities but we recommend you to taste our traditional meals offered twice daily. Another is the Lotus Pond terrace – a perfect area to read at night and watch the fireflies.
The Swallow Guesthouse is designed with Balinese tradition in mind. All the building, wood carving and furnishings are made by hand by local craftsmen. Guests can feel the warmth and passion that has been given to make this dream home come true.
There is a short 270m paved walking or bike path that leads away from the main road. Guests enjoy as it’s extremely peaceful and quiet. The short walk brings you alongside the rice and water stream allowing you to leave all your stresses behind. If you want to rent a motorbike, or bicycle for the time you are with us, please ask Wayan to help you.
Your Guest Service hosts Wayan and Putri, are there to assist you in accommodating you to your new home. Please discuss (anything) with Wayan. He has a wealth of information which he thoroughly enjoys sharing and is eager to answer any questions. It’s their pleasure to make your stay comfortable and stress-free. Don’t be surprised if they dress you up in the traditional clothing and whisk you off to a temple ceremony or family feast.
Wayan, a 15 year experienced English speaking tour guide and driver, would like to guide you to experience the REAL culture of Bali where you can explore ancient monuments, sacred temples, and the family compound witnessing the Bali of Ancient times still alive today without all the tourists.
If you desire assistance in airport or hotel pick-up, travel excursions for pleasure or business, he can help you arrange the details. For the EXPATS doing business or relocating to Bali, Wayan can assist exporters in their business affairs; connect with building suppliers and contractors; manage home building projects in the area. Internet with SIM USB stick is available for use. Charges may apply to activate. If you have your own SIM card or internet phone, reception is good for most internet activity.
Putri, Wayan's lovely and very talented wife Putri, is our Indonesian chef extraordinaire. Guests continue to say: "This has been my best meal in Bali" and "I want to take her home!" Fortunately for you, she loves Bali and creates large delicious dishes using fresh garden vegetables from our organic garden and local produce bought early in the Pejeng market. Please order 1 day in advance so she can buy the fresh produce in the morning market. If you want to join her and take a cooking lesson, don't hesitate to ask!
Specialty items like bread, cheese or yogurt can be purchased in Ubud and stored in your refrigerator.
“It’s perfect for me to study, better than I dreamed it would be.”

You can use the kitchen with all cooking needs. Coffee and tea is on us. Please be aware of the gass and water consumption. We have a drilled water well 75m deep so the water is fresh and drinkable but we do suggest to boil first. Above the kitchen is the Bale or gazebo to watch the activities of the farmers. A good place to relax and write a book!
Interaction with Guests
Wayan and Putri live just a short distance away and regularly come to assist you with your needs. Made, the security and general helper, keeps an eye on things while guests are away. Suzan is available for questions or concerns via email.
There is a small village market, several local temples, and a community organic farm with 24 cows producing bio products for organic farming. Feel free to wonder with the locals and enjoy their countless smiles. As a Hindu race, people are very giving and non-threatening to heighten their karma. They love showing you their culture and sharing the ongoing ceremonies.
Our location is 20 minutes NE by motorbike from Ubud in Pesalakan Pejeng and is the location of the ancient Hindu Kingdom that came over in the 6th century. Hidden meditation chambers and temples are scattered along the Kris River just walking distance away. Ask Putri to show you the way.
Pesalakan village is home to 200 friendly families. They are enjoying the interaction of our guests. Feel free to wander around the village streets and buy fresh fruit and duck eggs at the local warung/shops. If you are wishing to sample the local spicy food, we recommend to eat soon after its cooked so meal times are best. We are very excited to also be a part of the Balinese sponsored organic program started in 2013. The cows are fed grass daily and their wastes are used in the fields as bio-fertilizer and pesticide. You can visit the organic garden as well and sample the giant passion fruit donated by Wayan's father.
Nightly volleyball is practiced in the central road and you will hear the sounds of the gamelan playing in the background. Its a very traditional village. We are sure you will enjoy! Just a note about the dogs - they are barking only and never bite. Don't look at them in the eye or challenge them as they are not a western domesticated breed.
Because we are in a local village, public transportation is limited. Shuttle service is available for standard taxi prices of $10/one-way or for budget travelers, ride on the back of Putri or Wayan's scooter for short trips to Ubud for $5/trip. If you are going to want to be in Ubud everyday, we suggest to rent a motorbike or car to get to town. Reasonable prices are available for daily/weekly/monthly rental. Bicycle rental is also available for exploring the quiet country roads.
Other Things to Note
We are a GREEN GUESTHOUSE and hope you can share in respecting the environment too.
Ask Putri about our 'Karma Yoga' program to help the community protect the “Sawa” from the plastic in the waterways.
If you are doing your own cooking, organic waste can be added to the garden under the large fruit trees. Put your non-organic waste into the blue bin or take to the organic farm called "Simantri", a Balinese government sponsored project for organic farming.
Swallow Guesthouse is trying to educate the locals about the harmful effects of plastic in the environment and is working with Bali Recycling, a NGO who provides non-organic waste removal from rural villages in Bali. If you would like to assist, please put your non-organic waste into the red metal bins found in the Simantri or by the warung (small food shop) in the village.
We also distribute clothing and school supplies to rural communities in Bali. One such community is Munduk where we are assisting Rainbowbend Yayasan (local NGO (website hidden)) Supplies are greatly appreciated!
If you wish to visit the local schools in Pejeng and meet the children, please ask Wayan to arrange a visit.
We truly aim to assist in community sustainability and environmental stewardship.
•Swallow Guesthouse advises to purchase travel and health insurance as we do not take any responsibility for injury or loss of goods.
•Some water ways are located along the side of the house, please be careful.
•We reserve the right to charge guests upon departure for any broken or misplaced Swallow Guesthouse possessions. If you break it - please buy another or talk to Wayan about repair.
•Don't feed the dogs, geckos, ducks or chickens that roam freely in the fields around the house. They are a part of the community ecosystem and not our pets.
•Keep all food and sweet smelling soaps and lotions in the refrigerator as they attract the ants. If you see an "army", please tell Made or Putri.
•We have mosquito nets on most beds and night repellant plug in devices for your use. They are not usually a problem because of the duck, swallow, bat, and frog diets!
•Made is our assistant and security man who turns on the lights at night and keeps an eye on things when nobody is around. For peace of mind, and discouraging local animals, please keep your windows and doors locked when you leave the house and any electronics stored in their case or away from view. We are surrounded by a lovely group of villagers who also care and watch out for you. There has been absolutely no foul play in the 10 years of operation.
•We are a GREEN guesthouse and ask you to please respect the environment in which you live in. To help our village reduce plastic, leave plastic packaging at home where possible and be considerate of your use of gas, laundry soap and toilet paper. We use well water (75m deep) and it is considered safe for local consumption, but we suggest boiling it first. Bottled water to refill your water bottle is supplied. Please turn off shower water when soaping as the hot water tank is limited. Do not put any harmful material into the water system and use organic soap when possible.
•Putri will help in accommodating you to your new home. As the housekeeper, please let her know if anything needs extra cleaning or you would like more towels. Fresh towels and sheets are changed every four days.
Welcome to your home in the REAL Bali!!
Merveilleux séjour dans une maison magnifique ! Endroit et personnel accueillant et disponible et prêt à vous aider pour n'importe quelle demande. Plongé au coeur de BALI. Je le conseil a tous. Merci encore
Susan has the most genuine, real, and authentic, Bali experince imaginable. With 12 years of travel experiences in Bali Susan knows many locals and can help you to learn about and experince the best Bali has to offer. I traveled on my own in Bali for two weeks and never had anything near to the amazement and wonder I experienced at the swallow house. Truly, this is the best of the best and a place no traveler to Bali should miss.
Thanks Robert we appreciate your support. I enjoyed the diverse group of six people traveling with you seeking to do many interesting activities during the week at Swallowhouse such as teaching yoga to the orphans and helping out with the rice harvesting during Wayan's Culture Tour. I hope in the future we can accommodate more families and small groups who have compassionate hearts and want to help the children, woman and the environment like The Vichara Project does. Best to all of you from Bali!!
My nicest and most impressive stay in Bali.
Suzan’s house is situated near a small village, very quiet and it’s wonderful to get to know the Balinese living there.
The house and the rooms are very clean, and in a good style and lovely with lots of authentic details. The comfort is on a high and modern level and I felt very comfortable.
The rice fields surrounding the house gives a wonderful romantic athmosphere and with the beautiful sunrises and sunsets it’s a memory I won’t forget.
The food is one of the best I had during my stay in Bali and the portions are large. Breakfast and dinner were traditionally cooked regarding my wishes as well. Putri is such a symphatic and lovely person and a wonderful cook!I recommend to book it, it’s really worth its price!
Suzan lives in a very respectfull and friendly exchange with the Balinese and it was really interesting to get to know the Balinese way of living from this side of view. Also visiting a nearby organic farm was impressive and enriching. To me it is an absolute To Do in addition of all the touristy places in Bali.
As I joined yoga classes in Ubud during my stay, I rent a motorbike and drove to Ubud by myself; it only takes 20 minutes and it’s easy.
I can warmly recommend this accomodation and I am very glad to have stayed there! Next time I come back to Bali I will definitely go there again with my whole family!
The place itself is quiet nice, but very remote.
Sadly Wayan and his family know how to take full advantage out of it. They charge 8 USD for a night meal, where in the city center of Ubud its 4 USD for the same meal.
The transportation cost and trips are excessively high. And don't be fooled, when he graciously invites you to visit his family. You'll get charged an additional 25 USD per person.
The claim, that everything goes into the community is wrong too. Only Wayan and his family live like kings, owning over 22 rice fields and with marble flooring in their house.
If you have your own car and travel independent, that is a nice place. If not, prepared to pay over and over again for a medium service.
We are 3 adults, 2 mature parents and a mid 20's well travelled daughter. Wayan and Putri did a wonderful job at keeping us well fed and entertained. Putri is an excellent cook and served the best Balinese food of our whole trip. Wayan is always available to drive you and can suggest many tours or other ideas of things to do. Hiking Mt Batur was a highlight as well as the relaxing hot springs afterward. Also, thank you Wayan and Putri for opening your home to us and giving us a glimpse of village life. We really appreciated being invited to the temple celebration and Wayan and Putri dressed us in traditional outfits. This was beyond expectations!
The Guesthouse and it's surroundings are perfect for a memorable retreat, away from the hustle and bustle, right in the middle of the ricefields of Pejeng. With Putri and Wayan being the kindest hosts, we immediately felt at home.
Quick, adequate and welcoming respons from Susan!
This was the perfect start to our family trip.
Terima kasih banyak!

About the Host, Suzan
Inspired during her second visit to Bali in 2003 to help support Wayan and Putri, and their young family living in a remote village. He dreamed to build a birdhouse and cultivate the nests carefully as to not harm the eggs and to increase the population that is presently threatened around the world. Suzan dreamed to live part time in this paradise. They worked together to formulate their dreams.
The large birdhouse was never used for the birds as they had a natural home in a cave not too far away. Today, the Swallow Guest House is a home servicing international guests who learn closely with the gracious Balinese people, about giving and doing for the good of "Karma".
It is small international companies founded by individuals like Suzan, that financially and intellectually assist in helping the island of Bali survive the effects of world change and maintain the rich and ancient culture so many have come to love. Travelite and leave a positive impact!
Now in 2015, two children are enrolled in senior highschool with dreams to work in the tourism industry. Wayan recovered from his stroke and Putri, his wife and very talented cook, remains popular with all who eats her delicious meals. Suzan left her teaching job in Korea and is now assisting others to travel compassionate with her new business venture - Geko Treker Companion Tours.
We are very grateful of all our guests reviews and returns and are looking forward to sharing the Balinese unique culture with you :)
