The Space

The price reflected includes tax. Private Rooms at the recently renovated Notso Hostel Annex are modern, clean, simple accommodations. The six bedrooms have bamboo flooring, large windows and new furniture. There are two full bathrooms upstairs with multicolored slate tiling and new fixtures. The bedrooms have either a queen or double bed in them and are ideal for one to two people. All private rooms share a communal kitchen and living room area. The Annex is located just one block from King Street. It is a quiet, clean house and one of the loveliest accommodations for the price in downtown Charleston. Dogs are allowed for an extra $10/night, however we do have a strict pet policy where dogs cannot be left unattended in the room and must be on a leash at all times. We look forward to hosting you!

Guest Access

Private parking is available. Free washer/dryer, free breakfast, free wi-fi and access to computer and printer are available.

Interaction with Guests

We will be around when you need us! I am on-call/on-site, so you can contact me if you need anything at all. Otherwise, you are likely to see me in and out and around during your stay.

The Neighborhood

I love this neighborhood for its proximity to lively King St, tucked away bakeries like Sugar and Wild Flour, and cool little independent shops like Mac & Murphy (stationery) and Beads on Cannon (beads & jewelry). I love that within 2 blocks, I can be eating brunch and maybe indulging in some sweet gifts at Two Borough's Larder, drinking coffee on a quaint porch at Brown's Court Bakery, or relaxing and doing yoga at Jivamukti Yoga. There is a bike rental place right down the street by King St, as well as some really wonderful restaurants in the hip Upper King St area that is conveniently located about 1.5 blocks from us, too!

Getting around

There is a free trolley that runs throughout the entire downtown area, and the stop is only half a block away from us! We also have private, off-street parking available. To get to the annex or main location (where you would check in) from the airport, you can either take a taxi or airport shuttle (which leaves about 30 minutes after every flight that lands from the baggage claim area).

  • I highly recommend the NotSoHostel! My friend I were trying to find an affordable and safe option to stay in near downtown Charleston and this definitely fit the bill. It was a very easy check in and out process. The accommodations were nice and we were within walking distance to all the Charleston had to offer. I loved my time here!

  • For the big city and one night stay it was good. Room smaller than pictures appeared to show. Make your own bed and unmake it too pick up key and drop it off several blocks away. Clean! Easy parking.

  • Notso was everything I expected based on the listing. My stay was 5 days and I had zero issues.

The check-in location was about a 10-15 minute walk down the street from the Annex, I was able to check in promptly at 5 and head over to the Annex. The staff was very nice and easy to reach by phone when needed.

The Goldman room was small, just enough space to walk around the bed... sparsely decorated, but when you're staying at a hostel what else do you need? There were two bathrooms upstairs; both were kept clean. They obviously don't have a dedicated cleaning staff dusting every inch of the place, so don't expect 5 star hotel level cleanliness and you're good. This is more like staying at a (neat) friend's house.

There's a little kitchen and a lounge area; looked fine... I didn't really use them because you're really a 5 minute walk from King St — so you have a huge number of great places to hang out and eat at.

  • By the time I arrived at NotSo, I had already been on the road for two weeks, and was starting to feel the exhaustion. So it was a nice surprise when, for a couple of days, I felt at home with the hospitality of the NotSo team (thanks Nicole!). Communication was good over the phone, which was important because I was worried that I would be late for check-in due to some car trouble, and other than a mistake due to having the same name as another guest, everything went rather smooth. As soon as I got there, I ended up having a drink with everyone at the firepit of the main hostel before heading over to check out my lovely room with a sliding-glass balcony. This was my first hostel experience, and my only regret is that any hostel that I stay at again will not be able to compare in quality. Being able to walk everywhere was also a huge plus for a city that is more bicycle and walking friendly than it is car friendly.

  • It was such a great experience staying at the Notso Hostel. The owners were very helpful with getting acquainted with Charleston. Also, it is very close to a few great restaurants and a short walk to the historic downtown. The room was amazing, and the bathrooms are large and very clean. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, and I wish that all hostels were as clean and convenient as this one. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

  • Nice little place. Check-in after 5pm is a bit inconvenient. Everything else was great. Recommended.

  • What a great experience at the Notso hotel! Charlestown is such a beautiful city that you cannot miss on your way south!

The room was ready for us upon arrival around 8.30 AM as requested and the people there was really accomodating!

  • We had a pleasant stay during our visit, but you pretty much get what you pay for, as others have noted. The beds aren't the most comfortable, and both bathrooms definitely could have used a a solid clean. For staff members on site, I'm not entirely sure what they did other than the washing the laundry and placing the linens on the beds for guests to put on themselves. Other hostel guests were polite and respectful, but customer service on staff members' end was lacking a bit. We arrived within the hours of check-in time, but were told our rooms weren't quite ready and the linens weren't prepared yet. Not a huge deal, and overall our stay was decent enough. Just be prepared to roll with the punches.

Every Experience I Am Grateful to Have
Notso Hostel!
The staff at the Notso Hostel are some of the lovelies locals around. Our favorite things to do are eat breakfast with our guests, daydream about traveling and keeping the hostel clean with having as little negative impact on the environment as possible. The hostel is a great place to meet people who enjoy traveling as much as you do.
