This chalet is nestled in the Swiss Alps, near a ski resort and surrounded by mountain trails. If you're looking for a chalet with a community and a gateway to the outdoors Chalet Martin is the place for you. Meet people, enjoy your free time away from the cities but close enough to be a convenient weekend trip. The ambiance of the chalet is like a home, with communal areas to relax or meet people. This place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and big groups.

The space

The chalet is in an amazing location above the village of Gryon. We are a bit off the beaten path (although this is a path to our front door!) and we have stunning views to prove it. The chalet is an old building with a lot of charm and a few modern features. We do share the chalet with our guests so it has quite a family community.

Guest access

There are many communal areas to meet people or just relax on your own. Some room have a balcony, while others have stunning mountain or hillside views from the windows.

Within the chalet you'll find a large lounge/living room with comfortable seating space and plenty of room to relax with old or new friends. We also have multiple dining areas, giving you the option to eat in large groups or in more intimate settings. Our kitchen boasts multiple stoves, a plethora of cookware and ovens for your use.

Outside the chalet we have a large terrace with picnic tables, lounge chairs, a pingpong table and a BBQ (available to guests upon request). There is also a fire pit with seating space, surrounded by a grassy lawn and stunning mountain views.

Interaction with guests

Our family lives in the chalet with our guests so we are normally around to help and recommend places to visit for shopping, meals, hiking or other exploring. We are also avid skiers, hikers and rock climbers so we're happy to share tips for exploring the areas nearby!

Other things to note

The chalet operates as a hostel with shared and private rooms. This means you will be sharing the communal areas with other people. We are excited to help you get into the nearby mountains by opening our home to you; however, please do not expect hotel service as we are not a full service hotel.

We are friendly and helpful people but we are also raising a family alongside the hostel operations so we are sometimes pressed for time. It is always best to communicate any in-depth questions or requests well in advance so we can be sure to allot the appropriate time to help you enjoy your stay.

We live in the hostel alongside our guests. We cook in the same kitchen and often share meals with guests, all we expect is that people behave like they would in any family home. We don't allow pets or smoking inside the chalet.

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - The only way to access the chalet is up a gravel path, with a flight of stairs at either end. Many of our rooms are also on the second floor.
No parking on property - We do not have parking onsite. However, there is ample free parking in the village, a 5 minute walk away from the chalet.
Some spaces are shared - Many common areas are shared among guests, but there is a lot of space for relaxing or dining to share!

Merlin and his wife were superb hosts. He was available by phone when we had trouble finding the place upon arrival. It really is easy to find; we were just tired from traveling. There is everything you could need in the kitchen, and community supplies helped us complete a couple meals. We met some wonderful people from all over the globe. You may even learn some new vocabulary. For us it was 'knackered'. Gryon is such a friendly town and has a wonderful bakery just up the road from Merlin's place. We highly recommend Chalet Martin for your next visit to western Switzerland!

Chalet Martin is a great place not only for the young but the young at heart and families, too. Double room had awesome views. The staff is very helpful. Merlin is terrific with suggestions on where to go and what to do next during your trip. Showers hot, large and clean, towels big, kitchen well stocked with pots, pans, dishes etc. Close to train station. Make it a stop on your next trip to Switzerland.

The chalet is just a few feet away from the tram station so if you are carrying a lot of luggage or a backpack it's a 2-5 min walk depending how many times you stop for photos to the chalet. The town of Gryon is a magical place that seems to have popped out of a fairytale book. The view of the alps right from the double room balcony is priceless. The bed is very comfortable and the room is very private. It seems like you are in your own little house. Their are so many things to do in the area, endless hikes, pools, mini golf, spas/baths, and so much more. Any time of year. After traveling all Europe chalet Martin has been our favorite place by far! We will be visiting again with our family and friends. If by chance they are not all booked up we highly suggest you book right away.

The backpackers is super sweet - I booked obviously from Airbnb but the place is filled with work-aways so there's always people around and has a very friendly family atmosphere. Merlins family is adorable and if I ever needed anything I'd catch him when I saw him and he always fixed it up right away. There is access to many great hikes at chalet Martin as well as a short train ride away from bex or villiars (also walkable) where there are many shops and restaurants. The view is incredible. Nothing like waking up in the morning to drink coffee on the deck, laugh with my new international friends playing ping pong and have a smoke. You can take advantage of the coziness as I often did with a book in hand sitting by the fire. Or get an early start and participate in all this region has to offer. Would totally recommend chalet Martin :)

You might expect to become accustomed to the chalet and the view after a couple of days, but I can assure you you'll be blown away with the beauty of this place and the nearby mountains anytime you look outside. Chalet Martin is located in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Merlin and Gemma are two fantastic hosts, they feel like old friends from the moment you enter the chalet. You will love your stay here.

My wife and I first met in Switzerland doing a Ski season. We fell in love with the area and have been lucky enough to have made a life here. We enjoy sharing the space we have with our guests and watching them enjoy the environment where we live. The Alps is a wonderful place. We Climb, Hike, Ski and spend most of our time outdoors. We love it and I'm sure you will too!
